Carmarthen: Building on the Past

Professor Malcolm ParryProfessor Malcolm Parry visited Carmarthen to explore its history through its buildings and architecture in the second programme in the Radio Wales series 'Building on the Past'.
In the audio-visual tour below below you can view each building and listen to Malcolm talking about them on the accompanying clips. The audio starts on Image 5.

This 12th Century church is a Grade 1 listed building, and contains the most extensive collection of church monuments in SW Wales. Recently the tower has been rather controversially lime rendered. It's practical - it protects from damp but it's not liked by everyone. Works for me!

Here's what Malcolm has to say about Carmarthen:
"One of the glories of Wales is its small towns and the county town of Carmarthen certainly ranks with the best. There are difficulties for historic towns when they attempt to come to terms with modern life. Their charming old streets and small shops have to compete with heavy traffic and the modern developer. Carmarthen has suffered from new roads ment to relieve through traffic and out of town shopping but its fought back and its still a friendly and busy market town full of life, history and some damn fine architecture!"

If Carmarthen has always been known as an "Old market town" then why are the powers that be determined to get rid of the market in the town??? Can someone answer this question for me please.

I visited an aunt living in Llechryd, Ceredigion throughout my childhood and I have wonderful memories of Carmarthen. Arriving there by train from Cardiff and travelling onwards to Llechryd by bus. How excited I was - I loved the two weeks spent there each summer and sometimes in the Autumn. I has meant and still means so much to me coming from the city of Cardiff. Carmarthen dreams up wonderful sunny days, friendly people and the longing to come back. I return frequently and still feel "at home" there. Please look after our heritage.

Carmarthen has many attractive historic buildings, but more needs to be done to enhance them and the surroundings. Carmarthen could be a gem of a town but could do with some more facelifting - great potential to bring it back to what it once maybe was... C.E. John

I remember the demoltion of the small streets leading down to the quay as a child. I was outraged and it was one of the reasons I decided to leave. I could not live with such philistinism. It saddens me even now that I felt so strongly that I had to leave such a friendly community.

I see on your site that the remaining chunk of Carmarthen's castle is deemed "interesting". If this is so, then why each time I visit,is it surrounded by ugly fencing in a square full of clutter and debris ? What a shame. It could be a lovely square ,with planting tubs and tasteful street furniture and a historic backdrop that tourists would love .I look forward to the day !
