Enjoyed the photos of Burry Port, it hasn't changed. We visited last in 2005 and must have walked down the harbour nearly every day. We must say the weather and lifestyle in Sydney is great, but we do miss Burry Port.

Burry Port does grow on you, even if you're not born and bred there! I moved there when I was 12 and went to the then Central school 1970-74. Made and still have great friends in B/port. Don't get back as often as I'd like but I will be back for this years carnival. Really miss the flora and fauna - not much of it here in Jordan!!

My Dad (Gareth), Aunt (Glynis) and Uncle (Hywel) grew up in Burry Port. My Grandad (Mansel) was 'Jones the News' for many, many years. I have many happy memories of Burry Port, and not just of the sweets my grandad used to treat me to. He and my Nan (Rose) still live there. We will be going to visit in July, just in time for the carnival.

Frances Travis (ne Morse), South east Wales.

I lived in Burryport until the age of seven at Elkington Road, then left with my family in 1960 but came back to visit and stay with my Mamgu in William's Terrace often.

I go back each year still. It is a beautiful little place and is where my heart belongs. I remember swimming in the sea and even the harbour with my friend Susan Williams who lived next door to Mamgu and who left to live in Australia.

I am still living near the water and overlook the river which seems a common theme amongst those who have left, and although I have travelled widely there is no sunset as beautiful as the one on Burryport Harbour.

The pictures are fine, but there's more to Burry Port than just the harbour. Look north at the lovely green slopes of Pembrey Mountain for a start.

About a year ago Iwan Thomas of Old Colwyn enquired about St Ives in Burry Port. I recall the name from my childhood. If you search the 1901 Census by address, searching for St Ives in the parish of Pembrey brings up Nos 1 and 2 St Ives Cottages. From the adjacent addresses in the Census records it appears these were in Burry Port perhaps near to the Dyfatty stream, and beside the old railway line that passed below Moreb on the way to Pwll.

Wonderful pics of a lovely town that I discovered when my brother and his family moved there a few years ago. Always walk at the old docks and harbour, the beach is unspoiled and free of tourists. A hidden gem, thats Burry Port...

We owned Greig House on the hill overlooking Burry Port in the late 50's/early 60's 'till we moved away. I currently live in Erdington in the West Midlands, home to Josiah Mason. My daughter recently had to research him for homework, and it turns out that he helped build and develop much of Burry Port. Life moves in circles.
Mon Feb 2 13:41:00 2009

Larry Bernstone, West Midlands

Great photos, brings back memories. The happiest years of my young life were in Burry Port. I was evacuated there during WW2 at the age of six, am now 73.

I stayed with my great Aunty Rachael and Uncle Bill at 46 Elkington Road for about six years, whilst there I was baptised at St Marys Church.

I have been wondering if some of my old friends are still around, namely John Elliot, used to live in the cottages down by the docks, and Peter O'Connor. I know my Aunties maiden name was Griffiths and she had relations in Mansell Road. Would be wonderful if there were old friends still around.

My name was Peter Bunn. I was evacuated from Vauxhall station in 1939 and went to Reading, Berks. I remember it well I would like to tell my story because it is a sad, but happy one. I was five-years-old at the time and will be 75 in '09 and would like to join in any celebration events in 2009 - being 70 years ago when the war started.

Gary Smith, Jakarta Indonesia

I upgraded my late Auntie's home in Mansel St and will live there when I return from my job in Indonesia. The view is splendid over Gower and the sunlight drapes the kitchen and back bedroom all day. I stayed there as a kid from Tenby and, apart from super modern conveniences like gas heating, wall insulation and double glazing, nothing changes.

The birds and the children in the school continue their eternal sounds and society remains helpful and relaxed and there are no parking fees and an ice cream man comes each day at 5 pm...it is quite glorious and measured with good pubs and restaurants down the road and memories of my Auntie Bessie stuffing sweets and apples through my Austin Metropolitan car window on my way off to college when I always called by in the late 1960s.

Does anyone recall an area of Burry Port known as "St Ives" or does it just refer to a pub that used to be in Church Street? It has turned up on an old birth certificate so it would be interesting to find out more if possible. Many thanks.

Hi, I just came across this site after searching for some archive photographs of Burry Port and hey presto, see my brother Peter's message on here, regarding Dyfatty Cottages (now known as Heol (Road) Dyfatty.) Indeed, our Grandmother lived here from the mid 1960's until her death in the late 1980's. Also, reference to Beryl's email on Divanti Cottages (which I guess is Dyfatty) ... Beryl, who is your Grandfather?

I came to Llanelli from Cardiff 47 years ago. Although the area went into decline with the closure of traditional industries, I never regreted the move. Now that we have Pembrey Country and Sandy Water Park, the Milenium Coastal Path and Penclacwydd Wildfowl Center, the Pembrey Motor Racing Circuit and the Airport, the area has gone from good to great. I only hope too many people from outside don't discover what we have.

Great pics of the hometown. Love the shot of the sunset - fantastic colours. Hope all the developments that are planned for the harbour (housing, bars, etc) don't spoil it. Nothing wrong with change, but important to keep Burry distinctive.

Thanks for the pictures. My family came from BP and lived at 47 New St and owned the shop next door at 45. They were known as 'Williams St.Ives' because they had a pub called the St Ives in Church Rd. It became the White Lion and I believe it is now a Fish 'n Chip shop. I spent some wonderful summer holidays in BP in the 1950's and have fond memories of the place.

Grew up in Burry Port and went to school in Pembrey, my family used to run caravan site next to the old Parson's Pickle factory we lived in the tin bungalow which used to be called Derwydd Bungalow - maybe someone could tell me if it's still there as we moved out in the early 1980s - my grandad built he brick bungalow next door - he always added characteristic porthole window as he was (and still is) a seafaring man. Nice to see pictures though - some very fond memories.

Beryl - South wales
Started to trace my family tree, found out my Great Grandfather was born in Burry Port, I was told Davanti cottages there were two of them. So when I logged on to your site I was thrilled. What wonderful sunsets you have. Thank you for the photographs, I will call some day to see them for myself .Beryl
