Lived in Saron/Tycroes/Capel Hendre/Ammanford town centre, over a period of 7 years - my Aunt Siwla lives in Saron...miss the openness of that part of Wales, but must admit it is nice to not have to travel 20 odd miles to Swansea/Carmarthen to get to the decent shops, fond memmories though.

Raymond [Archie] Thomas Harrogate N Yorkshire
Born Glanamman and lived in Hopkinstown, Pantyffynon and Carregamman from 1961. Went to Parcyrhun Primary and Ammanford Sec Mod. Played football for Ammanford Cymru Groes and Bears.
Great memories of boys from Panty-Parcyrhun, Heol-Wallasey, Betws etc and of course Carregamman. I still visit, as my brothers are still around. Unfortunately, mam and dad, Bryn and Margaret have passed away.
I left home in 1971 to join the Army and have been away since. However my heart is still in Ammanford and Wales although I have a wonderful life here in Yorkshire. To all those who might remember me on our visits to the Old Cross, Bard, Railway, Miners, Pick, and Civic good times. Cheers and remember CYMRU AM BYTH.

I lived in Myddynfych for the first 16 years of my life and continue to have my very best friend live in Ammanford. Sadly these days too many of my family are buried here - my parents prematurely and so, visiting the town is always an emotional journey. Hello to anyone to knows me - I recognise a few names on this list!

Cheryl (Williams)Dickinson, Perth, Western Austral
G'day from W.AGrew up In Glanamman and emmigrated to beautiful sunny Perth Western Australia in 1982. Married to an Australian who I met on a holiday in 1981. Have lived here now for nearly 26 years with three grown up children Melvina Sian and Rhys.
I attended Glanaman Primary School then went on to AVCS in the 70s. Memories pour in from attending Sunday School at Mynydd Du and Bryn Seion Chapel on Glanaman Square.I come home to Glanaman regularly to see my Mam God bless her and for a taste of the language and the countryside but unfortunately not for the way of life ,which is non existant. Life has been good to me in Australia and she has given me all the opportunities Wales however would not have provided. I love Wales and will always hold her close to my heart.

It's lovely to read all the comments on Ammanford, I did not live in Wales but my father, grandmother etc did. We visited every year until I was 17. I loved it.
My grandmother lived on the Pantffynon rd. My uncles in Tycross, Carregamman, and an aunt in Saron. All sadly are now deceased, but when I visit my family in Coventry I always make a trip back to Ammanford, Swansea, Blackpill and the Gower.
My family name was Raymond Thomas...Pantyffynon Rd. Bryn and Margaret Thomas from Carregamman my Uncle Winston Thomas and cousin Gerald lived in Tycross and My Auntie Marjorie Thomas of Saron. My Uncles were all members of the Ammanford Social Club, which I remeber visiting and the park directly behind it. The river at the back of my grandmother's backyard, the train station and bridge and the wonderful yearly carnival, the fish and chip shop and grocery store - now gone from pantyffynon. On my last visit I took pictures and made them into albums for my grown up children and one for my grandaughter, who I am sure will be with me on one of my trips back to Wales.

WENDY ( WILLIAMS) KEARNS TORONTO CANADA
Left Saron in 1967 for Canada. Went to Saron primary and Gwendraeth grammar school. Have fond memories of regal dance hall in tirydail, as well as welfare and palace cinemas. Went "home" so my daughter Kaye could be born in Wales in Morriston Hospital in 1971. Came back to Toronto where she lives. I now live most of winter in Florida where we have a great Welsh society. My dearest friend is mildred jones from Penybanc who is 87 and naturally the conversation is always in Welsh. So glad to have found your site.

Kit Adde. Los Angeles,
I left Glanamman, right on the doorstep of Ammanford, in 1979 but come back every now and again to visit family. Living in sunny California I have to admit the persistent rain of Wales gets me down and it was the best move I've ever made.
I can arrange an outdoor event six-months ahead and be pretty certain of getting a dry day but can't even do that two days ahead in Wales. My friends in and around Ammanford say I look so much healthier and alive now, I stand up straight when walking instead of hunched against the wind and rain. Do I miss Ammanford? Yes, but not much! Apart from clubs and pubs there still isn't much to do in the evenings.

I moved to Ammanford twenty years ago, and I would not live anywere else. I now have five grandchildren, and they all speak Welsh.
Ammanford is where you still feel safe at night, and you can still drive traffic-free most of the time.
A great place to live and go to school, and to come for a holiday. Ammanford it's great.

I used to live in Carregamman, Ammanford, and emigrated to Australaia in 1967 and have been back once in 1992. I have so many wonderful memories and still have friends and family living there and my father is buried there. After he died, my mother came over here to live and unfortunately, died six years ago. I may return next year for a holiday and catch up. Ammanford, the place of my birth, will always be in my heart. Hiraeth!

We lived "up the Foel" (Foel Uchaf) outside of Upper Brynamman in a 300 year old miner's cottage in the late sixties. We used to shop in Ammanford every Friday. My brother-in-law (John T. Griffiths) was an optician, and his shop was at 36 Quay Street. Lots of fun memories come back to us from those years.

I've lived in Ammanford all my life, and I'm never moving away!! To everyone who says that there's nothing to do, you've got to make things happen for yourself. We've got everything that Swansea has got, some things are further away that others but who cares? Ammanford is awsome, and a great place to live!!

I left Ammanford 20 years ago but all my family still live there, I live in Neath now but see my family every week or so. Since my mother died almost 4 years ago it always makes me feel emotional when I'm there now. My family has lived in Ammanford since early 1900 and I love seeing the old photos and reading about other families with long histories in the area. I've got quite a few old photos of the area which I hope to put on a website soon. If anyone has any photos of 26 High St I'd love to see them, it's where my great grandparents, grandparents and my mother lived.

Spent my honeymoon in Ammanford in 1954.
As a hardup Welsh Guardsman we lived on
cherryade and chips for 10 days apart from
breakfast in the hotel in which we stayed.
I loved Ammanford though, nice place and
nice people. As a point of interest, as
soon as I returned to my London barracks
I was sent to Egypt complete with my
memories of good old Ammanford.

My Grandmother was the Grandaughter of Mrs Jones of Carregaman who donated the land to Christian Temple Chapel. Her name was Mrs Mercia Rowlands. She died last june aged 99. Her father was one of the Lloyd brothers of Pont-y-clerc Mine/Brickworks. She grew up in the house known as Hillside, now a nursing home.

Having lived in the town all my life,
it seems to be very quiet these days.
Back in the sixties and seventies the town was rocking with most of the top rock stars in the world starting out Jagger, Stewart etc.

Terrific to see the photos of Ammanford, brings back memories of a childhood spent there, eg going to movies at the Miners Hall and the old Palace cinema at the top of the Arcade. Also school days at the A.V.G.S, playing rugby and the pubs! Great days.

Coming from Tirydail and looking through this site brings back great memories of growing up in Ammanford. Like John [Brynglo] Davies of New Zealand, I too went to All Saints church where I sang in the choir under the guidance of the choirmaster Mr ALFRED PROUT.

The photos are great, I had fun showing my home town to the office, although their pronounciation of Rhydaman was a worry!
It would be great to have some more picures, maybe some of the pubs?!
Cheers

I was showing the pictures of Ammanford to my 20 year old granddaughter yesterday. The tour brought back a few memories. Great little town. Why did I ever leave the ocean and the wonderful countryside of Wales? So happy that you have this site. Would you consider adding pictures of Penygroes? Lived there for four years before my family moved to Manchester. My father and mother and sister are buried there.
