Mumbles and Gower is really beautiful. With great views and wonderful ambience. I guess the city centre is lacking and is a real shame.

Only been back in Swansea about 5 years, after 27 years in South of England/london....and every time I make it down to Mumbles or the Gower, I realise why I actually came back....Its not just that, it's the people, the scenery, the all round togetherness of the 'Jacks'
Ignore any negativity from certain individuals.....the shopping areas will come, its taken a long time to have a council in place who actually see beyond and artistic impression.....Its finally happening and Swansea is being transformed.

I loved Swansea so much, I stayed for fifteen years! I miss Dylan Thomas's "lovely ugly city", Gower, Mumbles and Dunvant where I last lived. My wife is Swansea born and Swansea bred, and as the song goes, if she had the chance to go back to Swansea, she would. So would I.

Oh how I miss my beloved Swansea. Fell in love with a Welshman and moved to this beautiful city in 2003. The passion and friendliness of this small city really outshines!! Will always remember disco dancing down Wind Street and walking home in the Welsh rain. Swansea you truly are LUSH!!!

How I miss Swansea. The old days are gone. The fish and chips are not the same. I am Swansea-born...I love Wales and always will - as thay say 'You can take the boy out of Wales, but you can't take Wales out of the boy', and that's right. I left Swansea on tankers as we sailed away the last thing I saw was Kilvey Hill, when I come home to my sisters her backyard looks at the hill...Swansea I love you.

Yes...I'm from Mississippi, as southern as you can get, but I too have visited Swansea! To this day, out of all my travels, Swansea has been one of the most amzing, beautiful, lovely, and monumental moments in my entire life. I spent two months in south Wales about five years ago and I still wake up every day thinking about how I would give anything to go back! What a wonderful place...a place I will forever cherish in my heart.

Spent the first half of my life in Swansea.Born and raised there! I love Sydney and know Swansea doesn't have too much sunshine or blue skies...but, good people, good times, great memories!
Mumbles was really fantastic in the late 1960's.Spent much time drinking coffee in the cafe by the bus terminus where the Mumbles train used to stop (was it Cresci's?) Joe's ice-cream was on this corner originally but is now on the other side of the street. I worked for local companies fixing the refrigeration to make Joe's wonderful ice-cream. Came back from Oz in 2004 and had a cone there - still tasted great! Roll on Swansea! Roll on the Swans!

I love the nightlife in Swansea. Always a wicked atmosphere, with great people, a wide variety of music and nights for everyone and some great venues!
Escape, The Crobar and Sin City are definitely some of my favourite clubs in Wales and have had some of my favourite DJs ever, big names from all over the world!

I've spent one year in Swansea, working as a French assistant in a school, and I've fallen in love with the city, the country and its people! Swansea is a beautiful place, near the Gower and beautiful bays: three cliffs bay, Rhossili bay...I'll never forget this year and this city, where I met nice and friendly people, and learnt some Welsh! I'm looking forward to going back again!!

When I was a child I always knew that Swansea had 'everything' I would smile smugly and say: the sea, the country, the town and only five hours from London. The best: widowed mother insisted we always went to the far beaches through the fields and streams and cows, or were they bulls. Pyle corner was our hangout, waiting for the bus as we didn't have to get home for a dad's supper.
As a teenager in West Cross I discovered the closer attractions of Langland Bay. Then at the University of swansea it wasn't an impossible journey across the Mumbles Road to loll in the dunes with an essay and future father of your children.
Lots of travel, I have lived in Toronto for a long time butlove my Swansea. Will be in Langland in October.

Great memories of Swansea, born and raised in Gendros, left to go to College but Swansea still has a great pull for me. Love the market, worked on a fruit and veg stall there for a while when I was at school.Like everyone else, miss Joes icecream, used to love going there when I was little. All my family still live in Swansea, so I get to go back quite often. My favourite place used to be the 'racecourse' (manselton/penlan) where we used to take the dogs for a walk, you felt like you were on top of the world up there looking down over the city.

I lived in Swansea until I was 20 then emigrated to Toronto. It would take a novel to say all I love about Wwansea. I went to Glanmor Grammar School which is gone now. Anyone go there in 1949? I was Jean Rich and would love to hear from someone. I miss the faggot and peas shop. I worked in Weavers and Smiths Crisps. Both my nephews have a meat stall in the Swansea Market. They know when we come home to get the faggots going! Swansea will always be in my heart.

My sisters live in Swansea and my mother and father before that for many years. I really enjoy visiting as often as I can and will be there again in August. Really looking forward to it.
My late uncle Wendell Nicholas used to own chemist's shops in Oxford St, Whitewalls and the Mumbles (now Murphy's). The old Union Cafe in Union St was run by my brother-in-law and his family before it closed some time ago. Have many happy memories of holidays in Swansea over the years.

We take the natural beauty surrounding us so much for granted, especially the bay. Cardiff are trying their best to emulate what us Jacks have enjoyed for thousands of years, and failing miserably! I for one, as I get older, am starting to appreciate the good fortune and birthright I have been given by being born in this wonderful city of ours. Enjoy!

I was born in Swansea...and left the city when I was only 39 days. I used to love Swansea by word of mouth - my mum always recall her memories in her stories about the city and how she missed St Helens Avenue, the hall and the stadium, the marina and the Welsh cakes at Swansea market...I LOVE SWANSEA TOO..

Swansea is a lovely area to live. There's not only the Gower but it's also wise to visit the stunning countryside up towards Neath or Brecon. You won't see anything like it anywhere I reckon. However, the city centre looks utterly dreadful...I used to really enjoy a trip into Swansea to visit the shops but no longer. I went this week and felt utterly low spirited because the shops look dowdy, or they are closed down, there's no effort to merchandise goods in an attractive or creative way. For scenery I'll stick to Swansea but for shopping it's Cardiff for me...at least it's obvious there's effort put into making it a worthwhile experience.

Left Swansea 40 years ago and still call it home! Great memories of the 'Faggott and Pea shop,' the 'Vetch', Mumbles Tram, fishing off Swansea Pier, looking for fishing gear caught in the rocks when the tide went out, spent my entire childhood playing in Weavers' and the South docks area, Guy Fawkes night and stealing other bonfires, sticking poor 'Allan' in a pram and seeing how fast he could go down North Hill road, he actually made past "Bowdens." Damn, I had a great childhood growing up in Swansea! Don't know if 'Allan' did though?

What cannot be said about Swansea, miss my wonderful family, friends. Breathtaking beaches, oh for some wonderful laverbread (how do I buy it in Darwin) and nice gammon. The old humble sausage not so great in OZ, but I guess the steak makes up for it. Been here 30 years but Wales will always be home.

The best thing about Swansea is that is has every thing you might want to do. Be it the night life the country side the coast. If I could some it up its every thing to all men. I been living away from Swansea for 18 yrs but I’m moving back home and I can’t wait. Can't beat the jacks for hospitality.

I was born and brought up in Swansea - I have lived for the past 13 years in the GCC. I did not realise just how beautiful Wales really was until I left it. I love and have visited all the castles in Wales and remember the drive from Swansea with my parents as a child usually on a Bank Holiday day out with sandwiches and flasks of tea (dodging the rain). The Welsh villages with their quaint and quirky charm. My highlight was fish and chips on the way home. Now that is what I miss living in Saudi Arabia.
I am planning to show my Saudi husband the beauty of Wales and visit all of Wales beautiful castles this summer...walks on the Gower coast and cliffs, Rhossili, Llangennith, Oxwich, Tenby, Port Eynon, Singleton Park and Mumbles.
Remember Joe's ice cream parlour – there has never been a taste to beat that one! Oh I do miss Wales, the rain, the greenery, rushing to collect the post though the letter box and dodge the neighbours in your pyjamas to collect the milk on the doorstep. Everyday things you take for granted until you don’t have them.

Been living in Sydney for ten years now - great weather and surf, but every morning when I catch the ferry from Manly into work will always remind me of the view across Swansea Bay. Still miss Joe's Ice Cream. Does the big guy who serves at 100mph still work there? Never seen anyone serve cone that fast or good anywhere in the world. Only in Swansea.

I was born and raised in Swansea, and made it to my 20's before I made the move out and I have to say that all of the quotes attributed to Swansea, namely:"ugly, lovely, town""an ashtray of a place""graveyard of a man's ambition."Are completely true. Swansea really is a beautifully horrid place.

Swansea is like no other city I've ever visited. You'd never expect this place to have 400,000 people living here. There is some amazing landscapes, beaches, and areas of natural beauty. If the natural environment is not your cup of tea then the man-made environment is just as good, with a whole street of pubs, bars and clubs Swansea has a dynamic and fun atmosphere. Definitely recommend it to everybody.

I was born in the Uplands, Swansea and lived there until 1965. It was the best place in the world to grow up and after a visit this year I still think the same - the beaches, city, market just everything.
I have such fond memories and still leave a piece of my heart there and probably would love to live there again. We visited the docks - wow what a change my Dad used to keep his sailing boat the Scotia there and I can remember having to negotiate the lock - before sailing out into the bay.
Lovely Mumbles, and as a child just loved the Mumbles railway and ice cream at Joe's! And as I got older Saturday night at the Tiv or at the Pilot club in Blackpill. Too many beautiful places to recall - I still miss my lovely home town.

Having just found the site I am delighted to know just how many are still as homesick as me. I left my beloved Swansea 44 years ago to live here on the Wirral; yes a lovely part of the country but oh, the homesickness is dreadful.Yes I still have my Welsh accent and am so proud of it. Born and brought up in Cockett, it was a lovely part of Swansea and attending Gors school. I was so lucky to have friends and neighbours like we had.The Mumbles train; so sad they stopped it. The Embassy for dancing the Casino... Oh what a wonderful time we had, Langland, Rotherslade (my favourite), and Caswell. Whatever did I do to leave all that; Joes ice cream and Valerios for coffee and of course the Tower for dancing what a wonderful time we all had.... Swansea will always be MY HOME you dont get people anywhere like Swansea folk I love and miss you all still.

Stumbled on this site - made me laugh and got a bit teary as well! I have lived here all my life (42 years) and would never think of leaving - the sight of the bay sweeping out before me as I exit the motorway onto Fabian Way never fails to make me smile. The people are the friendliest I've ever met, you aren't a stranger for long - yes the city has its' grubby bits, but that's what makes the good bits more special! The new SA1 development will be the jewel in Swansea's crown - come visit and see if we are all crazy, or is this really the finest place in Wales!

Beautiful beaches that stretch for miles in every direction, countryside like heaven and people who are the friendliest on earth.
Joe's Ice Cream - you can't get anything better than that. We have it all but the weather (which I can live with).

I moved away when I was 18, some 30 years ago. I frequently look at the photo’s sent in to the BBC Wales page and have a warm feeling in my heart at some of the memorable sights, like the Mumbles and of the Gower coast. Fantastic that Oxwich Bay is voted best beach in Britain (not surprised), great to hear of the new investment for the sea front. Swansea is a special place, an area of natural beauty. Even though I have good memories, even of the parts of it that have now declined, I know it is a City with a very bright future. I know that wheneve! r I am home there is always a special “welcome in the hillside”. Cymru Am Byth.

My comments may seem negative but the Swansea that I love vanished years ago. I studied at the Art School 1952-57,a time when Swansea was in it's prime. Today, when walking from the railway station down High street is a sad experience, closed shops and those that are open, needing a face-lift. The Kingsway is no better, just a shadow of it's former self. I could ramble on all day but I will conclude by saying that with the re-building of Swansea after the War we had a modern, dynamic town, clean and hospitable. I consider myself fortunate to have witnessed it at that time.

Swansea is the best. The beaches in the day and the pubs and clubs in the pm, Wind St is great, Sa1 Bar, Que Pasa, Lloyds Bar and good old Yates - just a few.
Fab, always a good friendly pm out, on to Play to finish off or 18-24 go to Time, the dance hardcore lovers go to Crowbar or Escape. Last but not least watch your drinks and enjoy.

I left Swansea nearly forty years ago but it hasn't ever left me. Born in William St backing on to the Vetch, moving later to Sketty, but spending as much time as possible down the Mumbles and Langland during my teenage years holds many happy memories. I've found a place in New Zealand similar to the Gower but laverbread, faggots, Joe's ice cream and Swansea people cannot be replicated. The mid-60s in St Benedict's, Top Rank, West Cross Country Club, Langland Bay Hotel and The Redcliffe are indelibly printed in my mind. Looking forward to my next visit in June 07.

Born and raised in Swansea,I moved to the USA with my husband and son 6 months ago and although I am very happy here, Swansea will always be home. What can be said about this wonderful city - it has something for everyone, I think. My personal favourites are:- Three Cliffs Bay, the Mumbles, Brecon Beacons, friendly people, faggots and peas, Joes ice cream, Welsh cakes, laverbread and cockles from the Market (my mouth is watering, could someone send me some?) When the city centre has been updated it will be a city to be proud of.

I love Swansea. What's not to like? Lush beaches, friendly people. Don't get me started on Mumbles - Joe's ice cream, the white (I'm the third generation of my family to call it my local) and of course any true mumbles peep would know the one and only Bentleys.
Swansea is fab and it can't be knocked. Everyone who every visits never wants to leave. I love it

I was born in Landore, and lived in Swansea all my life. When I was young, we walked all over the city, from Brynhyfryd to Penlan & Townhill, into Swansea to go to the beach, I think I know every street there is! As I get older I am more nervous about being in town at night, but like everyone says, it is a beautiful place and my favourite beach is Slade, we walk over from Horton and climb down the rocks but now I'm pushing 60 finding it increasingly difficult, I dread the day I won't be able to do it!

Oh I loved living in Bishopston, Swansea - I used to love going down to Onedins in Caswell Bay on Friday and Saturday nights for drinks and a dance and the chance to meet some surfy girls. The local beaches of Pwlldu and Brandy - the cliffs, the long hot summers - surfing. The fireworks at Murton. The snow storm in the 70's: remember snowline on Swansea Sound... That number 14 to Swansea town centre, the weird bus to Gowerton school that went all over the place. Superb!

Stephen Hopkins, Canberra Australia
I was born in Swansea, grew up in Winch Wen but have moved to Australia 30 years ago. Just had a recent visit back in Oct & Nov 2006, this being my 8th visit since emigrating to Oz.
I cannot believe how the city is changing for the better, with the Liberty Stadium, The water front and by the Marina.
The biggest change I noticed from my younger days is the night life in the city. Every night now there are young people getting drunk around Wind Street and walking around with no coat's, this used to happen only on Friday and Saturday nights and we used to wear coats.
But I must say the Swansea Jack's are just as social and friendly as ever.
I love coming home, cant wait for my next trip.

My uncle Jim and a few other relations live in Swansea and times I have been there and I will love coming to Swansea its much better than Bristol City Centre, but I like the Quadrant Shopping Centre, I like the Market and the Mumbles everything about Swansea I really like its a totally different look with buildings and suroundings...

I never used to appreciate Swansea until I left to go to Uni. I come home every weekend because the Uni isn't too far away and I love the feeling of coming into Swansea, it's my home and I love it. Leaving made me realise just how much we have here and how much I love it. There's so much to do here and so much to love about it...I can't wait until I get to spend a few weeks at home for Christmas!

As much as I love this city to the core I think they could do alot more to attract more people to it. Although the city is transforming slowly along with the really smart looking SA1 there's still alot of work to do! But good to see some comments from across the world about the city! Thank god for the uni!

Like many others I made that trip over the Severn Bridge to find fame and fortune. I'm a Mumbles boy through and through and miss the village immensely. Going home to my mam's Welsh Cakes, Covelli's rissloes and Joe's Ice-cream makes the westwood bound M4 journey a breeze but the return journey a heartwrench. The £4.90 Severn Bridge Toll is worth every penny (why don't they just make it a fiver and be done with it though).

Grew up in Swansea and left in my mid 20s. When I return for visits, my best times are going around the Gower, drink pints in pubs whether they be local or downtown and just walking around Swansea market. Did someone say "Custard slices!!". It's all part of the same experience to me of getting the smells and sounds of Swansea in my head again. I think my soul still lives there because every time I go there, I'm home.

Spent the best three years of my life in your wonderful little city. I never felt like a stranger in a strange place for one minute and looking back, I dont think i stopped smiling and laughing the whole time. I`ve even got my friends in the states saying "MUSH". Planning on coming back real soon to see Mr Trundle perform some magic for the super Swans.

Well, what can I say that another person didn't say before? I was studying in Swansea last year like exchange student and...oh my God, it was amazing. I miss sooooooo much living there, the beach, the people, the Welsh accent...I enjoyed so much, I'm gonna visit my friends in November, and I can't wait, I'm looking forward it.
If ur thinking of studying in Swansea, dont think it, just do it. Trust me.

Miss the old place. Never appreciated it growing up but now view every opportunity to visit as heaven sent. Theres nowhere quite like home.
Anyone remember Cwmbwrla boys Renna and Dirt and Sid and Tab and Wally and all the others, George pub, macarbe/morgue cafe in mansell street, and countless bands in Patti, and teachers training college. Canoldre youth club and Man's first outings? Trouble in Skewen Legion. Caswell bay sleep overs and Redcliffe? Saint Benedicts blues bands. Jazz club Glanmor,Castle Gardens meets. Buccaneer, Park Hotel, Tenby scrumpty bar, Prince of Wales, Griffin, and Hank and the boys! West Cross country club, and Amandas, Top Rank and Small Faces, Yog Jok to Porthcawl, and the Aberavon Festivals in Afan Lido, complete with Pink Floyd, Yes, and even Captain Beefheart. Those were the days!

Swansea is ok, it's the surronding area that makes it what it is. I'm a downhill mountain biker, and this is the best location to be in. All the tracks are a min of 40 minutes away. Perfect. I came to uni here and have never left because of this. It also houses one of the best alternative scene. The music electronic music scene has died though, but the live music scene just get better and better

Just about to start my second year in swansea uni and I can't wait to get back! The uni itself is brilliant! You feel apart of a community. I miss the beautiful beaches, Singleton Park, the nightlife and most of all the friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Our summer ball was held in Singleton Park and was amazing! We had rides, live performances and loads of food and drink! Perfect!

In three weeks time, going to Swansea for Uni 1 yr post-grad program. First timer to UK as well. My instinct urged me to choose Swansea Uni among many choices. After reading the lovely comments here, I am reassured that it's gonna be an awesome year in Swansea. I can't wait anymore to see what you guys have described here. Very unlikely I won't regret not taking the priviliged offer from China's top Uni in Beijing in favour to live in Swansea.

I can't understand why time and people have changed so much to when I was a teenager, around 1950, I would go out on my own in the evening, but today at the age of 69 I am afraid to go anywhere. It's not safe for one to even go shopping. I sit and wonder to myself, what has caused the world to change for the worse? Will we ever feel safe again? What do you people who read my comment think?

I left Swansea this year for the wilds of Carmarthenshire - best decision I ever made. Swansea is a fairly ugly, haphazard, dirty, provincially-minded and reactionary little town which, for some unknown reason, thinks it might actually be special.
Swansea's cultural contributions include; Wind street and the Kingsway, surprisingly characterless pubs, only one decent restaurant, and a dead, end of pier feel, to the seafront. Gower beaches are nice though.

Born and bred in Swansea. Love this beautiful ugly old town. My working commitments meant I have stayed in most places in the UK, and on my return always glad to see the viaduct in Landore, I know I'm home then.
Great local pubs too for instance the Manselton Hotel, great company , food and lager. Thriving golf society as well. Try the Landore Social Club on the weekend well worth a visit.

Moved here last year. I love it. The beach, the National Pool, the nightlife. The people are great. Best thing of all are the jam splits from the market. Singleton Park is great. Monkey Bar is great. Peppers Bistro in Mumbles is great. They have good service / great food / cheap / and massive portions. Try the full Welsh breakfast - lovely.
The only downsides to Swansea... the roads are a mess - I still can't get over how many potholes / drains there are.
It definitely rains more here.

The only place I call home is Swansea, although I wasn't born there, this is the only and only place; where I'm so relaxed, happy and settled. I have been living in Hove in the South East for nearly three years and have been away from home for about nearly six years (had a 3 year stay in Nottingham prior etc and hated it) ...
Anyways, I miss the place, my old friends, my beloved Swansea City, the panoramic views from Mumbles and the Gower, city life and a lot nearer to my family in Bridgend ...Shall I continue?? I call it my spiritual home and no matter where I will be, Swansea is the best for me.

Just that there's no ice cream better then joe's, there's no scenery better than the Gower, there's no footie team better than city :P and there are definatley no people like the Jacks!!!!!!! Swansea is my home and always will be. The people here are madheads :P and always will be. You've gotta love it!!!! Best place in the world!!!!!

Came here from Southern England last September - best move I've made and I've been round the world a few times. I live at the top of Constitution Hill and have views of the Bay and Mumbles - views to die for. People are friendly and actually talk to me, doesn't happen everywhere in the world. Not too sure about pronouncing place names though! Think I'll go to the beach in a minute. Eat your heart out if you don't live in Swansea.

It seems a lot of folk who move away from Swansea do so to seek their fortune. I'm doin just that, so when I return to Swansea I can lead the more comfortable existance that all Gower folk have. Once ur in a city environment u appreciate what the sea does for u...escapism...look forward to seein the cliffs again, and aint no place better to get drunk and messy... The surf life is the only life, forget anywhere else...swansea is the place for me.

My memories? The power cuts of the early seventies, my elder cousins smuggled me into the Spinning Wheel in Sketty Park where I had my first beer at 14. No one noticed through the candlelight. Tiffany's and The Surf House in Mumbles. On the mitch from Penlan School making my way to my Nan's in Bonymaen. She never told my parents. Faggots from Macphersons. Peter Jones cafe with its black fishy wallpaper and squashy tomato sauce. I live in a beautiful city in Queensland with glorious beaches and weather with my English wife and Australian children. When the train pulls out of High Street Station my hea! rt breaks. God bless my beautiful home town.

The reason why I love Swansea is because its the best of both worlds. I stayed there last year and will be going back this August. I stayed at the Marriott and got to look out my window every morning at Swansea Bay. It was simply breathtaking. When I got bored with all the scenery, I would walk over to the Quadrant Centre and eat out at an outdoor cafe. The people in Swansea are so friendly. I met many on the busses when I took some day trips. They would love to talk with me as other people eagerly waited their turn. I felt as if I were a movie star. Nobody ever turned their backs on me if I needed directions to get somewhere. In Swansea the people are very honest. If you leave a tip at the counter of a restaurant the person at the counter would come and tell you that you left your money. You would have to explain to them that it was a tip. This is so different from the US where they literally have their hands out waiting for the tip, so to speak. I would love to live there and it would be in one of those white apartment houses near the marina with the balconies. I would never tire of Swansea and its scenery. When I'm there, I'm relaxed and calm and its nice to get away from the rush that we experience in the US.

When I was in Swansea on the Summer of 2005, I felt as if I was finally home. I was born here in Canada but my parents and grandparents all came from Swansea so I feel more attached to Wales and Swansea then I am here at home. The best part of Swansea I have to say is the people they are so freidly towards you, unlike the ones in Cardiff. Everywhere I went in Swansea I felt welcome almost as if I was a Jack myself. The things you can see in Swansea is endless from Dylan Thomas Square in the Maria to the Peir in Mumbles everywhere you turn there is a kind of beauty following you like a small dog. I can't wait to return to Swansea so I can have the entire feeling of belonging again.

I <3 Swansea too bits I've lived here all my life(15 years lol) and believe it or not I never go out of the city for holidays. I always end up down the Gower usually down Port Eynon. Swansea is the best place to grow up. I live in the Uplands and its excellent because I have 2 parks literally right next door to me - Brynmill Park and Singleton Park it's awesome here because the city centre is only a short walk away also! Best part about it is even if I don't have a car to get to the Gower there's is a direct bus route there.

Left Swansea over 35 yrs ago yet it´s still home to me. Waiting for the coach at Heathrow to whisk me down the M4 always a friendly soul on board eager for a chat. Just clicking into the accent makes me feel happy. Non-stop chat all the way as if distant friends. Suddenely the beautiful view of Por Talbot looming up in the distance. It won´t be long now. How many times have I done this journey yet it never
fails to move me. My first port of call is to
go with an old school friend for a brisk walk around Langland to Caswell. Nothing can beat those views. Then up the mountains
behind Morriston hospital where the views
are so spectacular it´s simply breathtaking.
The bleating of the sheep and then that pure silence. It´s off then to felindre for a
walk around the lake with it´s age-old gnarled oak trees. Ancient woods so beautiful.
In contrast it has to Wind St
to soak up the free and easy night life. Girls with next-to-nothing clothese on (they surely must freeze) but simply desperate
for a good night out and all that laughter.
It´s so infectious. I just love it and I so miss it.
Feeling totally recharged
I head beack to my second home. Always sad to
leave but always looking forward to my return journey to soulmate Swansea.

I went to Swansea University, 28 years ago. My friends from home (Hertfordshire) went to different universities from Canterbury to Newcastle, but of all of us, I am the only one who still has strong links with the town I studied in. Why? The people are so warm and friendly that in my time there, a lot of the best friends I made were people from the town, rather than other students, and we remain friends to this day. This is pretty wel unique in my opinion. If I ever move back to the UK, this is where I will choose to live.

I spent a study abroad at Swansea and I really enjoyed my time there. Swansea as whole, it's people, it's culture, it's night life, it's location, is really just wonderfully. I am planning on bring my mother to Swansea on trip to the UK sometime soon, she simple has to see it. I don't miss really taking the bus to Uni from the Henderfolian, Student Villange but well I would gladly walk in a Welsh rain again just for the fun of it.

I lived in Swansea for 9 months and went to the University (Uni) which has beach front location. I lived in the Student Village (about 20 minutes north west from Uni) and met very wonderful people. Although it was cold most of the time, when Spring time roll around it was so beautiful! I love all the shades of green, I love the smell of wet soil, and I love how fast the clouds would travel. It felt like if I could just catch one I could travel around the world in an instant.
I miss it. I can't wait to go back and I'm already plannning my trip there.

Say what you like about any places west of Cardiff, but Swansea has a really special charm and always stays in your heart. You only appreciate the area once you've moved away and I'm definitely moving back there!

Swansea isn't the most cosmospolitan of cities, it probably isn't the prettiest city centre and arguably it doesn't have the sophistication of some other cities...
But without a shadow of a doubt, we know how to party and enjoy. The people are friendly and would do anything for you. Whilst being sophisticated and cosmopolitan very often leads to an attitude of superiority and pretention, in Swansea, what you see is what you get.
Swansea - don't ever change!!

After living in Cardiff for 4 years, I still miss being able to grab a sandwich for lunch, cross Oystermouth Road and eat said sandwich on the beach. I love the Gower; so beautiful even on a windswept November day - walking through the pine forest at Witford onto the deserted beach. The town centre is somewhat sad now with a lot of the shops either empty or used as £ shops (David Evans as an example). I prefer Mumbles for a night out rather than the town; I am rather biased as I met my husband there. Going back to Swansea is like putting your feet into snug, warm slippers after spending a day wearing toe-crippling jimmy choos!

Spent 4 amazing years at Swansea Institute in the Mount Pleasant area of the city studying for a degree and living in various student houses in the area. The Swansea locals were so friendly and hospitable to me and I miss the city every single day! Monday nights spent at Time nightclub, Wednesdays at the Escape! Weekends spent surfing on the Gower and playing football on Swansea Bay when the tide was out!
Met a wonderful local girl from Waunarlwydd who I moved away from Swansea with when we graduated but since we split up I've had no reason to go back! The city and the people will stay with me for ever though.

Val Shaw-Lewis, Calgary, Alberta, Canada
My family and I moved to Calgary, AB, Canada 38 years ago from Killay, Swansea. We live near the ocean where the beaches and walks were exceptional. Over the years, I returned to Swansea on many an occasion and always left a piece of my heart behind everytime I returned to Canada. My husband and I returned for a visit 2 years ago - this was my husband's first visit in 25 years. My husband was so excited when he could see Kilvey Hill as we travelled into Swansea on a National Express bus. Although he walked and visited many places that he remembered and enjoyed as a child and young man, he was rather shocked when he found the town center of Swansea disheartening, unkempt, rather dirty and dismal. He wondered what had happened to the beautiful gardens in Castle Square that these were now replaced by slabs of concrete.
To enjoy Swansea, I believe one has to venture to Mumbles and the Gower coastline, Singleton Park, Bishopston, Llangennith - places that bring many happy memories back to me of growing up in Swansea. The people of Swansea are very warm and hospitable but one has to say that about all Welsh people. On our return to Swansea two years ago, we spent two glorious weeks staying at a delightful hotel called The Wittenberg in Mumbles, now that was true Welsh hospitality.

It's the best place to grow up ever, I always miss it, but going back for a week is long enough, I then get depressed because everyone I knew and loved there has left. Camping down the Gower in just a sleeping bag at Three Cliffs and Pwll du are just a few of my memories.

Chris Duggan Swansea 'Jack' Home again
Having joined the Welsh Guards in 1970,I had to leave my beloved Swansea behind:-(
and obviously, due to my service I could only come home occasionaly). During my 16 years in the army I saw active service in Northern Ireland, Cyprus, and the Falklands War, I know the true meaning of 'Heirieth' as Swansea was in my heart and soul. Upon leaving the Army, due to employment, I lived in London, but my heart was in Swansea. Each time I set out to visit 'the old town', as soon as I got over the 7 bridge any worries I had were left on 'the other side'. On the first sighting of Kilvey hill, my heart would race with the knowledge that 'I was home' it's a feeling that only those who have lived away from home can understand. In 1991 I moved back home, and I take full advantage of all the beauty and love that Swansea has. Utopia is a myth, Swansea is the closest to it.

One of the best things about Swansea is that everybody returns, just milling around in pubs are amazing and gifted talented musicians from the the last couple of generations involved, and still interested and interesting passing on the myth of music and art. Many gifted musicians of this generation just milling around trying to do their thing, not conscious of fame but still playing as they please at a high standard. Everyone is friendly, everyone has time, views scenery, people wonderful and full of stories, encouragement and a sense of casualness as nothings really that important.

Swansea is a stunning place, the Gower, walking along the Mumbles, the city with the castle and of course Singleton Parc. I studied there from 1999-2000 and have since returned three times. The Welsh are extremely warm and hospitable and I always felt safe in the city. Swansea you're in my heart, see you in the summer :)

I am here on exchange and on my first day here, I fell in love with Swansea and her people. It is so gorgeous and the uni. is in a great location as well. The weather can be a bit dodgey, but it is sunny and warm today... so no complaints! Singleton Parc is also quite nice as well as the local churches. I think the ruins of a castle outside of the Quadrant add a nice touch. Since Swansea is a small town (in my perspective), it has a home feel to it and that you're not just one of the crowd. I am definitely coming back here to do some more schooling.
Love ya Cymru!

Swansea is in my heart as the place where you can relax on a warm summer day around Gower or the many beaches then in the night go mental in town. I've been to alot of places clubbing, never has it been as good or had the atmosphere of Swansea's Wind Street and Kingsway.

When I'm away from it, as many others, I miss it so much. That wild rugged beauty of the Gower which sometimes reveals a timeless prime evil charm more ancient than history itself. The friendly layed back west coast ways of the majority of locals is second to none. Swansea has a lot more to offer than many other places in Britain and it can be so underestimated. Love it and be proud to have it's presence coursing through your veins. Not that I'm bias in any way.

I love living in Swansea. It's a great city, I love walking along Swansea Bay, feeding the ducks in Brynmill Park, fishing off the Mumbles Pier, eating cockles, and skateboarding in the skate park near the Leisure centre. Then finishing an average day off with a nice pint of Albright in my local public house.

Generally people think London is where it's at and has it all... that is if you like grey skies, dirty streets, traffic jams and parking fines, being mugged - or even murdered.
Swansea is so beautiful and clean, it has the culture, the shops, friendly people and a town-like feel. Of course there are also the beautiful beaches and countryside.
But most of all - Swansea has the love of my life - who I long to be with - with all my heart and soul. You know who you are!

Swansea has it all... a city with all the shops you could ever need, beautiful beaches that stretch for miles in every direction, countryside like heaven and people who are the friendliest on Earth. People think that London is the place to be - that is if you like traffic jams, parking fines, grey skies every day - and being mugged (or even murdered).
