I Love Scary Places

Which place gives you the chills? Share your nominations here!

Last updated: 03 December 2005

Haunted houses, ancient burial chambers, trees that some claim can "bleed" in Nevern!

There are some spine-chilling places out there and you've been telling us all about the places near you.

your comments

Sophie, Swansea

There are two places where I feel aren't very welcoming. Singleton park is one, by the lily pond you often feel as though you're being watched. Quite creepy.

The other one would have to be Penllergaer woods; I love going there because most of the area feels very safe and at one with nature, but there's this one part near a vast area of towering trees where you get a sinister feeling. In these woods there used to be mines, this could explain some of the feelings...

Me and my friend went to St Thomas Beckett Church one night and got loads of fab photos of orbs and weird lights in the graveyard, the place was really scary and we were convinced someone was watching us. The orbs and unexplained lights on our photos convinced us we weren't going mad!

In response to Tom from Haverfordwest, I grew up in Penty Park and not once in my life did I see a ghost, nor did i ever hear a baby scream when it wasn't - shouldnt buy into everything you hear!

Me and a few friends decided to go to Stradey Woods one night. As we walked though the woods we [saw] four ropes hanging from one tree which were all different lengths, but...all the lengths were put into our height comparisons, with a chilling feeling the closer you got, then we all ran like mad.

My partner, son and I went fishing and camping for the night on a lake up in Briton Ferry and I was taking pictures and got a photo of a white haze with a old mans face (very sad, grumpy looking). I was totally freaked out. We heard a lady and a man's voice chatting all the time and like people were walking around all the time. Was so creepy I couldn't wait for daylight to break so I could go home!

Theres a lane in Ynystawe called Garth Road it is very haunted. I was walking back home there one night and i heard the sound of galloping. I turned and saw a horse coming toward me with a rider in old farm clothing. The legs of the horse were invisible beneath the road surface. It was visible for about fifteen seconds and then it just disapeared up the road. Spooky!

Gnoll Park woods has to be the most frightening experience in the dark. It just doesn't feel natural.

I've had a number of paranormal experiences, but I have to say that it seems you'll always find something in a pub. The first pub we lived in, The White Lion in Ferryside, had quite a few ghosts there. I saw one in the early hours of the morning after having gone to the bathroom - a medium later told us her name was Hannah. My grandmother also saw her along the cliff path; apparently she'd leave the pub through a door which was no longer there (people who sat there used to feel shivers) and walk along that path.

Also, my father was once sitting in the bar, waiting to open the pub, when he saw someone reflected in the mirror waiting at the bar. When he got up to see who it was there was no-one there.

My mother and uncle would often hear people calling to them from an empty bar when they were in the kitchen, and the sensor my mam used to leave in the bar when she had something to do in the cellar or kitchen would often go off, athough the bar was empty.

The second pub we lived in, 'The Bird' in Trimsaran, was also haunted. Although I never saw anything, my father and I could both feel someone there - watching us. It felt extremely evil, disturbed. My father's friend once saw him in the 'lounge' part of the bar, and when we left, the chap who was cleaning the place has also apparently seen him!

Sian, Mumbles.
I have to say one place i have found very haunting is Savers in Oxford st Swansea. I used to work there, and one day I was asked to get something from the stockroom upstairs. Another employee had told me that he saw and heard people upstairs all the time but I thought he was trying to scare me. As I walked into the staff room i heard two women talking and assumed it was my manager giving someone an interview as the first lady seemed to be questioning a lot. I then discovered no one else was upstairs and as I turned to run down the stairs someone shouted in my ear, 'My eyes are burning!'. I later found out that Savers had been completely burnt down in the Blitz.

I have to say that White Chapel in Clydach is the most haunted place I have ever experienced. I once went there with a few friends just to see what all the fuss was about. As soon as we reached the gates I started to shake uncontrollably and got quite disturbed. Then when we got back to the car, my boyfriend, who refuses to believe in the paranormal, confessed that he heard organ music coming form the chapel, even though the door was locked and it was gone midnight so no one could have been there!

I was walking home from my friends house one night and heard shuffling footsteps from behind me. I turned around and there was nothing there so I just walked on, but felt as if I was being watched. I was halfway round the corner when right out of the corner of my eye I saw a shadow of a man. I turned round and stared at where I saw it then I legged it back to my house!

Definitely Aberglasney - used to drive there 20 years ago when it was a ruin and you could imagine how it was in the old days. Very spooky as a ruin and very beautiful as it is now. Go there!

I have been to many different spooky places and the best I was at was Carew Castle....whilst looking through the gates I could see a lady and a man in a long red gown and the man in a sort of what I would descibe as a cloak and boots. They looked as if they were standing chatting when I said to my friends to quickly look at this they just vanished. I was shocked and also very excited.

A friend of mine was at home...and saw a lady in a wedding dress walking down the street at about 1.30am and she thought she looked absolutely beautiful. She watched her go down the street and when she passed her house she could see that she was floating....The next day she was talking to her friend's son and he said he had seen a ghost and she told him not to be stupid. when he described what she looked like and what she was wearing it turned out to be the same lady!

Two years after that she was going into her house...and saw the same lady float straight past her. She was absolutely gobsmacked, but since then she hasn't seen her since.

If anybody knows where in Pembrokeshire they do any ghost hunting walks, ghost hunting evenings or just investigations. please please let us know.

I totally agreed with Peter. Me and my school twice have been there and we have all walked down that spiral staircase and you do get the feeling a spirit does haunt the castle.

Without doubt the most spookiest place is the Buchaneer pub in Tenby. There have been many different sightings of a young girl sitting by the bay window during the early hours. Also Mike and Doug have reported tables moving and also unexplained images on the cctv system

My father sometimes tells a spooky story from when he was younger. One night he and some other lads were drinking down the pub telling tales of ghosts and things that go bump in the night. Some said that Neath Abbey ruins were haunted. One lad, who had quite a hard/tough image, did not believe such things. This lead to a bet between him and the rest of the group that he would spend the night in Neath Abbey ruins. So off he went with his sleeping bag down to the abbey ruins. He did not last long before he sped out of the ruins as fast as he could. He told the lads how he saw the apparition of a monk!

I went on a haunted trip with Geraint the snakeman to Margam castle it was great and really haunted. Two people saw a monk down the abbey and the emf meters were going crazy. I'd recommend a trip to anyone. I even got a reading thrown in from snakey himself and he was spot on. Margam is really creepy and has got to be one of the most haunted places in wales I can't wait to go again

Near the lily pond in Singleton Park there is a very very angry ghost, stalked me and my friend through the park, right down to the beach front - left scratches on my friend's back as well. Looked back once, saw a glowing white face following us, have never been so scared in my life! Went back once, not very far into the park, and it was still there. Anyone else experienced this?

Carew Castle, never fails to produce activity whenever we carry out an investigation there. The mood and atmosphere of the place change each time, and yet it never worries me when I do my solitary walk through the place at three or four in the morning just before locking the gate.

Would love to know of any spooky sites in Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire that my paranormal group could visit, any suggestions would be greatfully appreciated!! Perhaps you could join us in a investigation.

The old Kwik Save in Station Rd: I was cleaning upstairs and I never liked it up there. You always felt you were being watched. On that day I was cleaning the fridges and there was a banging coming from one of the doors when I went to look there was a white mist. Well I ran down the stairs and would not go up there on my own.

Lor Milford Haven
Lower Priory Milford Haven is where I had my first sighting of a ghost. Travelling home one night we hit a dip in the road and as the car lights lifted up we witnessed a very tall figure standing just by the gateway on the left. A very scary experience.

There are lots of very spooky places in Pembroke, try walking the Barrack Hill at dusk, the 1st bridge over the Bosherston lilly ponds, the old fort on the Barrack Hill, but most of all Bush House just outside Pembroke and the remains of the Commodore Hotel in Pembroke Dock dockyard. The whole of Pembrokeshire is a very spooky and so old but after dark, I dare you to walk around the millpond walk at night and pass the notorious Wogans Cavern,go on u ll love it!

Margam Abbey - Tunnels to Beach
During Henry V111's campaign to get rid of the monks, apparently he trapped them when they were attempting to escape through the passage ways (now under steel works. Both them and Margam are one scary place. Stayed in Margam Park and its definitely haunted.

Come to the Royal Oak in the Bryn. This is not an advertisment as its my local but things have happened there that will make you think twice about ghosts. They have had a séance there and two of the many landlords don't want to leave! Come and see for yourself. Spooky...
Thu Apr 27 10:18:46 2006

Sarah Lewis, Cardiff
We were at the Royal Oak pub in Fishguard over Christmas and we heard all sorts of weird and wonderful stuff from staff and locals:

The ghost of a little boy called Jack, a friendly old man and a horrible French Soldier to name a few!

Apparently this has all been varified by many mediums and spiritualist who have spookily all come up with the same stories! The pub was even featured on Pembrokeshire Radio's most haunted show...

so if you want to scare yourself silly go along to the Royal Oak, ask them to turn the back lights off (they did for us!) and I dare you to go down to the back toilets ALL BY YOURSELF!! I couldn't!
Mon Apr 24 16:48:53 2006

Karen from Swansea
My old house in Tonna near Neath had a lot of activity. None of it was of a threatening nature but all of it was very weird. One of the weirdest things was when I head a little girl reciting "ring a ring a roses" in the baby monitor in my bedroom, picking up the voice from my sons bedroom monitor when he was too young to speak. The girls voice sounded about 5 years or so. My house there backed onto a lane after the 60foot of my garden and then there was a 100ft drop to the canal so no fear of it being picked up from someone outside, and the people next door on either side didn't have children or any visitors at the time! My husband is a medium however so I've come to expect this kind of activit--even tho it isn't normal, it's not unplesant...

Lol Haynes; Swansea.
Over the years I've had many weird and spooky experiences, most of which I would put down to friendly spirits or an overactive mind. I have one "odd" memory from my youth though which I've never really managed to suss out.

I was about 11 years old with my best pal at the time,Huw........at least I think it was Huw! It was a long time back in 1979!

We were playing on a piece of rough land behind Gors School in Cockett, Swansea (it's all blocked off now so don't think about going there yourself). It was a pleasant day,not too hot but very sunny. What I remember of that afternoon was that when we were on one part of the field all seemed fine and normal but when set foot into another part of the field we became very lethargic, quite sleepy, it was almost as if we were walking through a heavy, syrupy atmosphear.

We jumped back and for between the 2 areas several time to ensure our sanities.I wasn't really scared, in fact we found it really funny to start with but I can then remember having the feeling that if I fell asleep on this patch all would not be good. It was as if nature was either enticing me back to the earth or saying get out of this patch or you wont get back home.Needless to say I am still here 26 years later.

Have you heared or experienced anything similar? Were we just 2 kids with overactive minds, did we really enter some strange otherworld or were other powers at play.Guess i'll never know.!!!!

Strady Woods, is one weird place there are alot of stories, but what not many people know is there are coal mines running through the cliffs and underground throughout Strady Woods. There is one entrance still open not so far in, on the other side of the river on a corner that is where me and some mates seen a blob of white fog which seemed to be 25 feet into the dark entrance we watched it for 1 min and then it started moving out towards us. That is when we ran, weird thing is 2 years later thought it would be funny to take a date up there only to see the same thing again but this time I ran and she was left behind trying to get her heels off.

Li, originally from Llanelli
The spookiest place in the world is Stradae woods in Llanelli. A friend of mine was once camping in the woods with two friends, they decided to walk to the nearest shop, so the started walking down the very quiet road on the outside of the woods, the Trimsaran-Llanelli road.

As they were walking my friend looked up and saw a runner coming towards them in very old fashioned running clothes, but they thought nothing of it until 10 seconds later the runner ran straight through him (which the other two witnessed) and when all three turned round they simply saw a flash of white light continuing up the road. They were later told that a runner has been killed on that road by a car in the 1930's.

The scariest place I've ever been to is Margam Castle in Port Talbot! The gothic style castle has a real scarry feeling to it, the white lady is said to haunt the castle and there are loads of people who have claimed to see her...
Sat Feb 12 18:24:30 2005

Elaine from Carmarthenshire
We moved to our house just over a year ago. It has a lovely friendly atmosphere. A couple of weeks ago, as I was brushing my teeth, I saw a cat running across the bathroom floor quite playfully - but it was not one of my cats, and when I turned round, there was nothing there. My husband has also seen it from the corner of his eye. A friend came to stay and as we were showing her where her room was, she jumped as a cat reached up to pat her hand with its paw. However, my three cats were all lying on the bed, and of course there was nothing to be seen... It is a friendly cat, playful and plum, we call it PC (Phantom Cat).

I have to say that the footpath which runs adjacent too the River Tawe in Ynystawe is fairly scary. I often walk my great dane here on early mornings and I swear its haunted, I keep expecting a ghostly galleon with spectres to appear before my eyes.

Hubberston Fort in Hakin, Milford is really scary. I went to go inside it once with a friend and I couldn't do it. It felt like my hair was standing on end!! Very scary.
Wed Nov 24 12:08:30 2004

Jo Cartmill Milford Haven
When we were younger some friends and myself used to mitch off school and go to the fort in Hubberston, Hakin, Milford Haven. We used to play dare and take it in turns to walk through the dungeons of the fort to see who would go into them the furthest.

All I know is that when it was my turn I walked into the darkness for a while feeling my way by touching the walls, well the next thing I felt was someone or something pulling my hair and breathing down my neck. But no one else was in there except me, everyone else was outside waiting, but my hair was being tugged from behind all I can remember is screaming to my friends.

They came in with the torch, I couldn't move from fear. No one else dared to do it again that day but other people had said that they had felt like they were being pulled from behind.

Was it our young and over active minds playing tricks on us or was it something else we willl never knowwwww? But there are alot of stories told by old people around the area about things they have seen. Why would so many peole lie, there has to be some truth to it. I do belive something is there, an old building with so much history .I will leave it to you to decide...

Hakin Fort

Strange happenings, death of a tramp terror, black as the ace of spaces. A place to visit, and never be forgotten.

After 30 years I still am haunted by the witches home and the feeling of never being alone.

kirsty from briton ferry
The spookiest place I have been is in my old primary school in Briton Ferry, there was an old chapel which they use as a classroom for year 5's.

In the "back room" they call it, that leads to the toilet, in every corner of that room is cold and right in the centre of the room is cold (you get shivers running down your spine). When I was in year 5 no-one would go to the toilet, they would all wait until break time or hold it in to the end of the day. And at mid-day just before dinner time you would hear a scream and cackling, our teacher said it was just the heating faulty. When we found this old box, we were terrified, it said Mary White, died 12.01.29. The ghost of Mary White still lives there in that school....
Thu Sep 2 19:23:50 2004

Tom from Haverfordwest
The spookiest place I know of is Penty Park Mansion House near Walton East in Pembrokeshire. The cries of a baby can be heard when there is no baby in the building and it's claimed the ghost of a woman who swallowed weed killer and a man who took his life have been seen in the grounds and the house.
Wed Sep 1 09:53:35 2004

Myself and a few friends did a vigil at Hermon chapel one night looking for anything unusual, apart from a few wierd noises nothing untoward happened but our cameras picked up a few strange glowing gravestones that we can't explain. It has that feel about it especially in the small cemetary at the top near the derelict church.

With regards to the comments about Aberglasney. I used to stay there when I was younger and I used to wake before anybody else and walk the grounds. There was always an eerie fog that lay over the grounds especially in the area of the walkway that runs on top of the wall in front of the house.

Also try walking through the area that I used to call Hobbit Hole (The walkway made of tree's) whilst it is dark - start from the house walking away, you get the feeling that you are being watched from the other end.

Philippa of Haverfordwest
My parents house is due to be blessed a.s.a.p on the outskirts of H'west after 30 yrs of spooky goings on in our georgian home. The final straw was last week when my mum was going up to bed and when closing the living room door to go into the hall and something invisible screamed/snarled at her for a few seconds about 2ft from her face. She was rooted to the spot with terror. My dad searched the house and found nothing! Now the Dean of St.Davids and the vicar from our parish church are coming out this week! Watch this space!

Tara - Cockett
(Tara claims to have seen some unusual things in a Swansea church)
St Mary's church at about two o'clock in the morning in town. The large stained glass window appears to bleed dirty blood and the strange burial chambers lining the church building itself shake vigerously and if you look into the window of the Quadrant shopping centre, above the automatic door, facing St. Mary's, then you will whitness the most frightening thing - that strange statuette that is suposedly cursing the church... moves.

In A block in my school it feels seriously freaky. I don't like walking around it on my own, and especially not in the dark! I'm not entirely sure if it's just me or not, and I can't think of any reason it would be haunted cos it was built in the 30's (I think), but apparently there's a Tudor mine next to it. Still rather scary!

When I was on new deal in 2002 I stayed in a mansion in Boncath. I always felt uneasy in the small bathroom. It felt as if I was being watched.

Rebecca Morris from Cocket
Me and my friend were in my house on our own because my sister had gone out and my mum was over her friends for an hour or two. We were sitting there talking when the attic door started creeking quietly and a few seconds later, there was a huge bang,as if someone had fallen down the steep flight of stairs. We were terrified no one was in the house apart from us two. A few times that night we heard footsteps on the landing, after that night nothing else unusual has happened!!

Becky and Jade from Morriston
In Morriston/Treboth in an area called the sim cocks estate there is a big old cream farm house that stands out from all the rest. We were visiting a friend of ours and we stayed there over night. We were in the living room watching a funny film when we all heard the scribbling of a pen and soon after a blank piece of paper fell on the floor, our friend said 'don't worry it's just my grampa died in this house over there (pointing to were the paper fell). She also said 'don't worry girls if there is any other wierd things happen it's just him again because he loved this house so much he still lives here now'.

Lisa from Swansea
The scariest place that I have visited is an old manor grounds in Gowerton Swansea nick named Bethlehem. The feel of the whole place is of being watched and an unpleasant evil oppression hangs over you even in daylight, not for the faint hearted.

Matt. Jones from Morriston
There is this big whitey, blue house in Morriston and I went in there once as a dare. My mates were all saying it was haunted but I didn't believe a word they said. So I went in and took a camera with me, I took a few photos of myself in the house and carried on looking around. Next thing I know I heared a funy voice, at first I thought it was my mates messing with me but then I felt a chill go down my spine. I looked around but there were no windows any where in this room, and I saw no gaps in the walls except for the door. I thought I heard some one screaming while I was in the house, so I ran as fast as I could to where the scream came from. It was in a pitch black room, I could hardly see. Then I opened my eyes and I found myself back in my own room, don't ask me how I was just there, and the picture I took I was not in them as if I never existed!!!

After hearing so much about Aberglasney, I decided to take the kids there in the recent half term holidays. We didn't see or hear anything unusual, in fact we thought it was a beautiful place, not at all spooky. But,when I tried to take a picture of my eldest son with his hand sticking out of the hollow in a tree the photos wouldn't come out. I installed new batteries, still no pictures showed up on my digital camera. Imagine to our surprise when we got home and played about with the camera taking photos of the family, the camera was in perfect working order. I just cannot explain it.

Shaun nominates Aberglasney Mansion:
"I have to agree with Roger, Aberglasney Mansion is a spooky and surreal place. Me and some of my friends often visit and we have seen some frightening things: faces in windows, children's voices and footsteps behind us. I'll let you make your minds up."

Jane agrees with Lee's nomination:

Jackie tells us that the scary place she loves is:
"Our friends' house, an ancient Welsh farmhouse, near Trecastle. My husband and I heard Druidic/harp music the very first night we stayed there, back in 1999. It came from outside in amongst the hills, and was not scary, rather the opposite - soothing. No-one else has ever heard it though! The house has no bad vibes, and the music merely enhanced our first stay with them in Wales. Needless to say, we keep on returning and listening our for it again ..."
