Ann GOOD (Nee Moore)

A most enjoyable read, I visit the site quite regularly. The 'old names' pop out and it is so interesting to see what people have achieved with their lives.

This week, Wed 1 July 2009 my 'old church' by that I mean the church I consider to be and always will be 'my church' St David's Church, Margam, is celebrating its 50th Anniversary. I just cannot believe it is 50yrs old. I remember from a very young age I joined the choir there, became a Sunday School Teacher, actually started the Brownies/Guides at the Church along with a school friend Raye Davies and a great lady, Edna Davies, who sadly died a few years ago.

A strong Youth Club, we had annual pantos - as we called them. We had a great church organist who was Hywel Evans, sadly Hywel died many years ago and at such a young age. The church was such a great place, full of activity and a wonderful congregation.

There is a service there at 7pm on 1 July 2009 I am sure it will be a joyous occasion. Hopefully many 'old faces' will re-appear...

My grandmother lived in Taibach - Maes y Cwt Tce with the mountains opposite her house and the steelworks at the back. We lived in London but visited every year and when I got older I spent every summer holiday in PT staying 4 weeks at a time. I can remember walking down the back garden to the outside toilet and seeing the steelworks all lit up.

We used to wait for a ride on Emlyns milk cart through the lanes at the back of my grandmothers house. The park opposite was a lovely place to play with my cousins we had a big family in PT when I was young the Jenkins Harris & Williams families.

I too enjoyed the cinema, swimming pool and the lovely beach. I was back in Port Talbot..to tidy the graves, I have such wonderful memories too many to put down, I am glad other people feel the same.

Lived here all my life all 35 years of it anyone who says there nothing to do in old P.T has not seen what it has to offer. It has one hell of a beach seafront with one of the best surfing breaks around surfing, running, kiteing, or even just a walk. Weather permitting it has it all 2.5 miles of it.

People go on about Gower - yes it's beautiful, but surf in the morning, then five miles up the mountain it has one of the best mountain bike tracks...

I am amazed by this website. Just shows that the old Port Talbot is not forgotten. Does anyone remember Chidzoys Fruit and veg shop on Station Road? Wally Chidzoy was my Father and I remember so well playing on the top of all the potato bags in the warehouse and hoping to find a tarantula that may have come in with the bananas!

Hello Donald Henry, I well remember you ,when you used to go to the TYC. Also when you worked on the Galv line. I lived in Margam originally, then Cwmavon, for a couple of years and for 35 years Taibach. I now live in Neath,s o I'm not far from the town. I echo the sentiments of a couple on this forum, in that whenever I have been away, I always relish the stink of the coke ovens as I approach Port Talbot and know that I'm near home.

Hi Carpo, regards to you, thanks for the mention. Also hi to the friends I grew up with, Elizabeth Thomas, Susan Bell, Kristine Jones, Sandra Archer and my second cousin Susan Hardie. I often think back to the wonderful times we had dancing at the Taibach Rugby Club, Afan Lido, and the bands (groups) that were around in those days, like Quicksand and The Eyes of Blue. Always in my thoughts...

I loved Port Talbot before they knocked the heart out of the town, remembered waiting at the railway crossing in the town and excited to see the train pass by, or go over the bridge, down to the maypole or into David Evans, the old Market was a great place, and the Red Lion chip shop. Also Margam was great to grow up in the 1950s went to Gros School and then central, then to Eastern, all good memories - I remember you Ann Moore you were in school with me, Ivor's fish and chip shop was the best.

Moved from port talbot about 15 years since, had some fantastic times playing for the quins. had some even better nights in the clubs in town, troubador carlton just to name a few. Shivers down my spine when you drive past pyle and you see in the horizon the steel works. Now all my friends kids are growing up and wearing the red and black of the quins. Have 2 children myself 16 and 12. love coming home. Proud as punch of port talbot.

Lived in Aberavon until I went to London University and moved to Dallas, Texas. I attended the Mountain Elementary then Dyffryn Grammar (1953 to 1961. My friends included David Evans (we hitchhiked to Europe two years running), Keith Atkinson (we went on geology trips), Derek Jones (rugby outside half), Phillip Thomas (rugby inside half), Donald Kilpatrik (second row), David harry (prop)- all members of the first team 1959-1961. I loved Aberavon where you were free to roam the beaches, the sand dunes, the mountains (picking winberries), riding bikes to Swansea coastline and Kenfig pool. I lived a! t John Street and then moved to Southville Raod on the sandfields estate. Many great summers swimming and winters hunting. There were farms between the estate and Baglan road (with half Moon woods) then but probably all houses now. We could walk around Margam Abbey and climb up to the old monastary ruin. I would ride my bike over beach hill, through town, down Station raod to Dyffryn grammar rain or shine. It was a wonderful place to grow up.

Port Talbot rocks!

Ian Harris From Brisbane, Australia

I love and miss Port Talbot and spent the best part of my life there. I moved to Oz 3 years ago, but every day I check BBC South West Wales to see whats going on in Port Talbot/Swansea etc.

With my parents buried in St Marys, my daughter Hannah living in Margam and my brother Andrew living in the posh part of Baglan (as well as a sister in Barry), ansd other relatives around Port Talbot, it's always in the back of my mind.

With Beach Hill going I was devastated, but I can remember the old market that used to be opposite St Marys when I was a kid in the 60's before they knocked it down to build the "new" centre.

I remember how busy Aberavon beach used to be with all the little cabins and even at one time a nurses' station on the beach. Mount Motors was one of my favourites having bought a few bikes there and Sandfields comp.

Hi everybody from P.Talbot. Lovely to hear so many great comments about my home town. Marvellous that everybody who moved on still remembers their roots. Ann Moore (nee Davies) formerly of Margam now Stam

Visiting the site yet again, great to see names like Phil Heycock - gosh I remember the butchers so well. Lots of names I can remember. I visited Port Talbot October 2007 sadly for an old teacher/friend Mr John, who used to be at Eastern School and in Cymmer. A lovely gentleman - he will be sadly missed.

What have they done though to the town...who...authorises paintwork in the town and surrounding areas - the dreadful bright blue, it is dreadful, really awful, a disgusting colour to be honest. Put a bit of class back into the town.

I have so many fond memories of the town. Seeing the policeman at the Walnut Hotel on duty, the Maypole shop never did I think in years to come would I too be a Police Officer in the town, 'plodding' the beat so to speak. Those were the good old days.

Some aspects of the town now though look dreadful. They talk of development - when, where? At times it looks rather depressing. It's so sad. Still its home, and Margam was my home. I still visit fairly regularly and I get lots of news too. Reading this section though is simply great. Keep up the good work.

Philip Heycock Weston super Mare

I grew up in Taibach (My father was Reg Heycock the butcher on the Mount). We left Port Talbot when I was 11, in 1969, but I still have very clear memories including many of the teachers at the Eastern school on the incline (Miss Nicholas and Miss Deeble) and remember the occasional steam train going up the line towards the Goytre.

Also the Saturday Odeon and the old market and Woolworths next door. I can clearly remember sliding down the mountain near Dyffryn Rd on cardboard boxes too.

My father knew everyone and a few years back he bumped into Anthony Hopkins filming 'Remains of the Day' in Weston and Anthony recognised him and he ended up having tea with him and his mother Muriel in his dressing room!

Haven't been back to PT for a few years, last time the shop was a cafe and was up for sale. My father who was born in 1910 had some amazing stories and the table in the old slaughterhouse at the back of our shop apparently came from the big sale in the 1930's at Margam Castle. Happy days.

I love and miss Port Talbot, where I grew up. Now happily living in Canada with my Canadian wife, these are the things that I fondly remember. Good beer and a laugh at the local Legion with long-time friends. Shopping at Tesco and running into people I know. Walking along Aberavon Beach on a wind-swept day. Margam Park in the Summer. My favourite takeaways and most of all, my dear family.

Hi been reading this site and it is marvellous to read about all the old places. I was born in Sandown Road - my parents had a fruit and veg shop there, and my father used to go out in his lorry all around the estate selling his goods whatever the weather. I went to Sandfield school in Pendarvis Tce and still have the form photos taken outside the building that used to be a dentist at one time just at the side of the school.

Many names I recall, Eileen Coles (my best mate) Valerie Williams, Margaret Clarke, Janet Harris, Francis Reynolds, Dai Griffiths, John Jones, John Charles and so many others. What good days.

Gary Williams, Watford

The Amazon! Little old pub on Sandfields Estate opposite Silver Avenue, of course you have the Royal Naval Club prior to that where my wedding reception was held. The Bay View, The Red Dragon, Four Winds, Labour Club, Bingo and Strippers on a Sunday morning, Executive Hotel, The Sportsman Afan Lido, RAF Club, opposite the Beach Hotel, which is across from Antolins. (Bar Gallois). There was then a Club just behind the Fun Fair, Def Leopard played there and other big named bands in their early days, The Greenstars Rugby Club and you should by now be very very drunk my friends. More to follow if I can only remember.

P.T. pubs, clubs and live music are a darn site better than Watford pubs etc and always will be I reckon. Only New York can beat it but only just, believe me.

To Colin Re: Pubs opposite the arcade. If I've got the right loction you're talking about they could be The Oddfellows Arms and the Castle. They were just getting pulled down when I was getting of legal age although I did go in under age with my mates Gerald Payne and John Puckett a few times. What a shame all those old pubs went.

Can any person help me? What was the name of the public houses in Water Street facing the Arcade. Also the names of the two pubs in the side road again facing the arcade when turning right off Water Street towards Richard Street. I think one was on the corner of the back lane from High Street and Richard Street. I can remember Woolworths and Dan Morgan electrical shops but not the pub names.

Port Talbot has changed so much since I was a child. I was brought up on the Sandfields and I remember going with all the older kids from Chrome Ave down to the beach. Lynnette Isaac, Faye Rees, Kim Godbeer and many more that I can't all put down (sorry). The changes that have been done to the beach are fantastic so far but still more changes are needed fast. Port Talbot is a place i would never think of leaving apart from my summer visit to Majorca with my family. Even though I moved from the beach I now have a lovely view of the mountains from my home and my family is still in Sandfields. What more can you ask for.

Haven't lived in Port Talbot since 1973 (aged 16). Brought up on Sandfields near the fair. Brilliant childhood memories, Miami Beach, Day's fair, diving off the pier, sewage on the little Warren Beach, throwing stones at the rats down by the river, getting drunk for the first time aged 14 on Old English cider...Sandown Road chip shop, Uncle Bryn, The Sandman, Jersey Beach Hotel. Yes great memories.

Angela Sara, Bridgend
Born in Port Talbot my dad, Garfield Davies, was landlord of the Railway Tavern in Water Street. Went to Mountain School, best school ever with Mr Morgan pulling two shilling pieces out of boys' ears! And Miss Murphy scaring the living daylights out of me, Mr Morris letting the boys put coal on the open fire, losing tennis balls over the railings and watching them roll out of sight down to town. Walking down Station Road as a kid hoping to see the gates close and a passenger train cross the road and sitting on the bridge watching the rats go in and out of the river. Had a friend Sally whose dad ran The Walnut Tree, and a Chinese friend, Wan Ching Yee, whose parents ran the laundry. Moved to Aberavon where my parents were landlords of the Four Winds. The bowling alley was given a stage and all sorts of groups on a Saturday night were given a spot. My dad jumping over the counter to break up fights, and people coming to apologise to him on a Sunday. Howard Winston coming to the boxing matches. Ballroom dancing and competitions with ladies in fake tans and huge dresses. Lived in the flat above with the unmatchable views over Swansea Bay, nothing compares. Playing down the beach on a windy winter day with the sand stinging your legs, the trampolines, the boating pool and the skating rink, and concerts in the summer in the pavilion with Bryn Thomas buzzing around organising all. The orange night sky and the stink of the steel works, and the funny colour waves that lapped on to the beautiful sand. Lived around the world but PT will always be home.

I love Port Talbot but moved away for work. What Port Talbot means to me - Aberavon Beach and the Sandman, The Mountain with the old air raid shelter, The Old Farm, The old market with the smell of welsh cakes, Madam Renee’s, the national schools for cubs and scouts, the Odeon on Saturday mornings, Football in St Joes ‘Big Yard', Wolsey Wanderers.I remember Bunny Barton, Dicky Barton and Jan (metropolitan united), Roy Lemonheigh (goal hanger extraordinaire), etc

Born in Sandfields, I love Port Talbot and would never move. What Port Talbot means to me - Aberavon Beach, Mynydd Dinas, the Afan Lido (does anyone remember the model of the Lido which was in a case outside), Aberavon Market (old one with Belfast sinks where the butchers used to wash some kind of offal) Miami Beach funfair, the sand dunes (tumps we used to call them), the boating pool - I could go on and on. Does anyone remember the farm which was basically behind where CEM Days garage was, horse riding on a Saturday morning for 4/- (4 shillings, 20 pence nowadays). Some people may mock but hey, PT is home.

Mary Barton Canada
Hi Deborah, My name is Mary Barton and I do remember having a friend in Port Talbot, playing in the graveyard and eating fish and chips at Joe's. I was 10 when I left and so I don't remember much but some friends names and a few places. I live in Vancouver British Columbia now with my husband and two children. My brother Richard is coming home in July for a visit to Port Talbot. I'm hoping to come home for a visit in the next two years. Great to hear from you! Mary

I remember as a youth on Sunday evenings with my mates, Howell, Dai and Owen and we would meet at Salmi's for a coffee then walk through Port Talbot eyeing the talent and chatting about the dance we'd been to the night before. Past the Walnut Tree down Water Street and over Beach Hill to Antolins for another coffee. Then retrace our steps back to Salmis for our final coffee before going our separate ways home. Do you remember? The three are still living in PT!!

What a find. My grandfather lived in Knox Street and we would go and stay for hols. We used to back on to the steelworks and I was mesmerised as an eight-year-old boy at all the lights at night and the smoke from the chimneys.

Used to love the ice cream at the cafe at them row of shops that was run by Italians. And our first outing when we used to visit was straight to the barbers round the corner for a basin cut lol. Oh and the cockles n lava bread delivered to the street in the van lol. And good old Mary and Johnney bamsy that used to always spoil us. Have very fond memories and must visit soon.

Why doesn't anyone outside Port Talbot like Evans Pies? They are part of our heritage and I was horrified when someone told me the company had closed. Thank God it hasn't.

I would like to nominate Greasy Len's chip shop as the most atmospheric on earth and it should have been preserved as a cultural icon, not given a make-over.

originally from port talbot, now living in the west midlands. i do miss port talbot and friday nights out in the welcome to town.... still got a lot of friends living there and some not so friendly people... they know who they are... but generally did enjoy my years living and working in Port Talbot, especially growing up with all the boys, Beynon, Kinsey, Phillips, Gaz morgan, Davies, Porky, Moonhead (if you see him, you would understand), and anyone I may have forgotten.... all the best.

Karen - Cwmafan
I loved Cwmafan park, where I spend all my teenage years, the Urdd discos in the 80s, The Troubadour, Francos chip shop for rissole and chips, evans pies and Lee Hong Chinese in Station Road for food fights on a Saturday night! The Hideaway and the Carlton which were always a bit rough, I never went there but heard all about it. The Grand in Station Road, The Plaza where I first watched Grease, and The Old Vic as it was known in the 80s along with the Forge Tavern..Not forgetting The Afan Lido, best place on earth for sport, The Fairground with the wonkiest rollercoaster in the world! The Jersey Beach - alwways good for a Wedding Do - food always good there - and the Exec for the upmarket types - So how much do I love Port Talbot - with a million memories - This much

David, Birmingham

Grew up in PT (Baglan) but have been in Brum now for 15 years. Family still there and we get home 6-7 times per year. My kids love the beach (there is not much sand in Brum!) and the fact that there is so much on hand (Margam Park, Swansea).

Beach under-rated - which is great cos it is quiet! I remember from the 'eighties the Troubadour, Old Vic, Bake & Take, Lee Hong, Sker bar, Sandman II, Frankies, Beacho (shame it burnt down) and in the 'seventies the Miami Beach fun fair, the paddling pools, candy floss, proper Lido etc.

My grandad was born and raised in Port Talbot but left in the thirties and settled in oxford. My dad takes us back three or four times a year where we stroll along the beach before going to watch the wizards. A very relaxed town, I always enjoy my vists. Was there yesterday in fact and the weather was beautiful, always great returning even though my relations are long gone.

Wed Mar 14 12:41:32 2007

Colin Williams from Pentyla

Born and raised in Pentyla (opposite Heathmont) youngest of four children. Many happy schoolday memories at Aberavon Mountain School - friends Colin Dunbar, Andrew McKay, Peter Davies, Michael Davies, etc. Went to Neath tech where made new friends - Ronald Spilsbury (also surname Gregory), Richard Dobson, Russell Williams, etc - all from Port Talbot. Where are they now?

Moved out of town in 1968 and married a girl from Bridgend and living in Bridgend. Still have a brother in Margam and often visit the old town.

Has the town improved? Memories of the policeman on point duty at Water street, crossing gates in Station Road, Odeon, Plaza and Grand cinemas. Traffic hold ups every day on Pentyla, Donovan's shop, Ann's Pantry, Aberavon Woolworth, market, arcade - I could go on and on. Walks up Mynydd Dinas winberry picking, the top and bottom flats on the mountain behind Pentyla. Oh happy days. Only worry was what homework from school and what Mam had for tea...

I was born and raised in Port Talbot, my family are still in the area, I moved away just after college, am living in the USA now with my wife Miranda. I remember growing up in PT spending the summer holidays down the beach, the open air market (where my Dad ran the electrical stall next to Liz and Jeff williams they sold laverbread and cockles etc) I miss those days to be honest.... Planning on visiting home in June 2007 so it will be great to see all my old friends again.

Where are all the rest of the 60's and 70's Glanafan peeps? Remember - Sunday night at the Exec; The Troubador; Terry's Caf; Mdm Reinies; Basher; Wally; Percy Twitch; Woolies broken biscuits; Baglan youth club.....I could go on! Still - the Brook had been decorated to prevent any regulars going there. Progress?
Wed Jan 17 09:08:19 2007

Chris Thomas from Taibach now Crystal Palace
Is it me or did Evans pies seems bigger when you were younger? I still have to have one after a walk on the beach whenever I go home.

The Lido was best when it was an Olympic Pool when you could dive and swim without a wave machine (thats what Swansea Leisure Centre was for). Although it was built the wrong size. 100 yards instead of meters, I think.

Only in Port Talbot could a swimming pool catch fire. It was more flammable than the Jersey Beach Hotel!

Remember the funfair. The smallest and most dangerous rollercoaster on the planet. Banging into every corner.

Never mind spray on tan, you could walk into the sea at Aberavon Beach in the 70's and come out a darker shade.

And of course the Plaza cinema where I first saw Grease. With those two flickering red lights either side of the screen.

Dont forget the 'sliding patch' behing the Working Mens Club and 'Jesus Saves'.

Just found this site. Can't believe that someone has mentioned Dock Street. Both my parents lived in Dock Street and I have heard so many stories of how life was good, very poor, very basic, but very honest life.

My father was Johnny Brennan and my mother Verna Crealock passed on wonderful stories pinching coal from the passing trains and getting on with life in poor circumstances. My father also played for Wharf Rovers football team. Nice to hear from someone that knew about Dock Street. Like to hear more?

Rebecca Neath
Hiya Kate,I think you will love living in Neath Port Talbot, the people here are so friendly and I'm sure will make you and your family very welcome,we're a great bunch down here. Port Talbot is polluted due to having the steel works there but I'd say no more so than London, and I think the amble countryside, beach and parks would more than make up for it, there's no place on earth better then Aberavon beach in the summer kids love it,and it's great for long walks in the winter. Margam Park is another firm fav with people around here, in neath you have the Gnoll Park and hours of fun can be spent there, and a short ride in the car will take you to Swansea, you've got so many nice lovely beaches down there. Port Talbot shopping center is great much better than Neath it's all indoors and has every shop you need, Wilkies, Boots, Iceland etc,as for your kids being picked on, I think ud get that anywhere but remember kids are really resiliant and I'm sure they'd fit in really well. I hope this has helped and good luck when you move down here I'm sure you'll be very happy. x-x-x

Hello, I live in London but may be moving to the Neath/Port Talbot area. I've seen some lovely pictures and read all these messages, but want to know what lifes like there not just nights out. I'm sure its going to be 100 pecent better than London but want to know more. Would love to hear more from people like is it good for kids? Is the pollution really that bad? Will my kids be picked on for being English? It looks a really nice place.

Dave Jenkins, Margam
Having lived (& worked!!!) in PT all my life, I agree with all the previous comments, and will add that when I was in business in "Selwyns", visitors on holiday in the area were always full of praise for the town. People, scenary, pubs, things to do, things to see. Taking fishing folk past the first lake in Margam Park, up to see Dai Power on the farm. Margam Abbey, Orangery, Castle, second lake, they soon forgot about stinking PT, this is the beauty and the beast town. Eastern School, DUFFryn Grammar Scool, (I couldn't spell it then either!), Val Antolin, Gom! er Rees, all part of PT. Sadly the town IS changing, possibly not for the better, but to the changers, it will be their town also, eventually.

Jayne and Sian (Cwmavon)
We've lived here all our lives - appart from the odd foray to uni and work. This place is home. You can't beat the copper house on a Saturday with johnny robbins singing working man or gaynors Sunday dinners! The beach is great in the summer and so are the mountains (plenty of room for horses!- in Cwmavon) The people are normal- its everywhere else they're strange. There's no better way to spend a Saturday than picking windberrys up the Foel or galopping across the beach. Above all this place is home and we would never leave!!!!!! xx

I was born and brought up in Sandfields that big sprawling concrete jungle - our only saving grace was the beach. In our childhood many hours were spent eating jam sandwiches albeit with sand in between and a bottle of coporation pop as it was called, picking windberries selling 2 neighbours. Love it, it was a lovely beach - high tides penny bars. A good time with mum and dad was a simple walk and dodging the high tide bay view full afan lido full used 2 love it then they decided to revamp it big mistake. I lived here until I was 21 then went 2 liverpool where I worked as a hotel receptionist. I came back when I was 23 and got married. Wish I had listened 2 my mother - had 2 kids and moved 2 Holland for fifteen years which I loved although I missed the Welsh humour and the hospitality of Wales. Well I'm back ten years later, I still love Port Talbot the old smokey town. When I worked in Liverpool I rememeber coming home on the train looking out of the window geting all excited about the smoke rising from the dregs of the steel works I used 2 work in the grand and used 2 love the folk evenings love 2 have your comments. xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Adrian Morgan, San Francisco, CA
I've just had my twentieth anniversary of living in California. It's made me think of Wales a lot. I can't say what I'd like about PT now, but the photo's look damned nice. What do I miss about Port Talbot and Wales? Everything... Jumping off the sand wall into the high-tide waves in summer. Stale sandwiches and crisps from the waterfront kiosks. Miami Beach Funfair. The old market. Walking home after the last Thomas Brothers bus drove right by. Watching The Cure in the Troubador. Getting thrown out of the Troubador. Walking home from the Troubador. Walking home from the Exec. I didn't have a car. Is that obvious? Sound of the mail train at night. Real beer People without tans. Donkey Jackets. SCOW golf course. SCOW Christmas parties. Ferarri's cappuccino I'd better stop.

My mother was born and raised in Port Talbot in the 20's. She left to do her war service and married and never returned to live there settling in Buckinghamshire and having 5 kids. She died in Feb 2006 but she left us with pride of being half taff. We spent most of our school holidays there and even now it is a special place for my family. Her dad was Guy Berckley Roberts of Taibach and he was a war hero of World War 1. Upon his return he was presented with a silver cup by the people of Port Talbot for his service. He lived his days out in Port Talbot dying in the late 60s. My dad still has the cup and it is a treasure to him.

Hiya! It is wonderful to read so many great and positive things about PT - it will always be my home, even though I left back in 1982. Went to work in Abu Dhabi, UAE and after 7 years headed for the U.S. I don't get home as often as I would like but I still am, and always will be, a Port Talbot/Baglan girl! I love the beach and town! I have yet to have a pasty with brown sauce and a Vimto like they served at Ferrari's! Too many watering holes to recall but Taibach rugby Club holds fond memories, as well as the Bagle Brook where I worked for a whil! e! Up the road, the 'Ferry Club was awesome! Life is very different now! ;) Love to all!

We love Port Talbot because its so much more civilised than our neck of the woods (London area) and there is a slower, more laid back pace of life. We love visiting our family there and my dad was born in Neath. Also, the beach is beautiful. Best thing overall though has to be the Welsh Cakes and the ice cream and chips from Francos!!

PT is a magical place. The Corus canteen serves the best "half n half" in town. I especially like looking out over the steel works from my porch, even though they are nothing to do with me.

best thing is the curry houses - i have been all round the world and have yet to find a better location. My friends and I were so impressed we set up the Swansea Curry Club - and our favourite outing is always to the Port Talbot Tandoori! May not be the prettiest location but they do a great Mutton Bhuna.

Port Talbot's home, and it always will be despite the fact I live overseas. I have only been back twice in two years, but am really looking forward to going home for a week or so sometime in the next few months. It will be nice to catch up with friends and family face to face for a change. (Though I have bumped into a few locals over here, when they are on their jollies!) The funny thing is I hated the place when I was growing up, but with hindsight it wasn't that bad really.

Growing up in Goytre gave me a childhood you can`t buy. Mountain and rivers, trees, summer on Aberafan beach (remember the old fair),chestnuts and blackberrys and if it snowed, waiting at the top of Goytre Hill to see if the bus would make it or not, meant days off school.

Red sky at night meant the blast belching filth, and those magical lights from the steelworks telling you that home was near after a day at Porthcawl. I loved it and loathed it but dam do I miss it. If the moutains were misty it was raining,if you could see them it was about to rain.

Now my view is rooftops for miles, ayup me duck is the language, forest is a football team, and the lights are miles of traffic. I miss the place even though I still visit, and proud to say that I come from a town with a fantastic variety and many fond memories.

It was a great surprise when my daughter e-mailed this web site to me. I have enjoyed looking at the photos and reading all the comments from other "exiles". I have lived in the U.S. for the last forty years. I live in a small village of Lewiston, a farming community, which is 12 miles from Niagara Falls and 30 miles from Buffalo where I used to work. I am 6 miles from Lake Ontario, it is a beautiful area tolive in. Youngstown is at the mouth of the Niagara river as it flows into the lake holds sailing regattas every year. It is a wonderfull sight to see all those sails out on the lake in the late evening.

BUT!!!! being born and bred in Taibach there is something missing in the atmosphere here. I was born in Mill Row (no longer standing, it was turned into a bus park for the steel company)in the shadow of the blast furnaces. I worked in the old Margam Melting Shop, when that was closed on the continuous galv. line. But my best memories were in my younger days playing pick-up rugby on the Plow, in Taibach Park, playing cricket at Margam Park, swimming in the "res" up the Brombil, and playing in the dunes at Morfa, before the Abbey Works were built. I wonder how many remember the old Picturedrome, we called it by another name, which is not printable. One cannot leave out the many hot summers on Aberafon Beach, sometimes we used to walk there from Taibach. Then in winter watch the Wizards standing on the "tanner bank".

I was able to come "home" 3 years ago visiting my family, still living in the area. To say the least I was not too happy with the changes they made to the old place. My surprise was to see Ferrari's coffee shop still there. I missed the old market place, most of my old watering places have gone: Royal Exchange, Red Lion, the Angel just to name a few. But it was great to be back, Port Talbot will always have many happy memories for me Cymru am Byth

Great to read so many plaudits about the old place. I lived in Pendarves Terrace, right opposite the Infants School, and accumulated more canings for being late than anything else. Remember the legendary days of "Conk" Walters and "Bony Ben" Morgan? Greetings to all the ancient survivors.

Port Talbot the name conjures so many memories, good, bad and indifferent. Central primary school, Glanafan Grammar (later Comprehensive) Margam Tech, British Steel and BP Chemicals. Taibach Rugby Club,Taibach Working Mens club. Aberavon and Morfa Beaches. Mynydd Baglan, walking our dog when we lived on Pentyla, just down from Heathmont School. Left Port Talbot in 1972 and have not been back for over 25 years as no longer have any family there, but a small part of me still misses the place and No matter where I go it will still be home.

Port Talbot is the best town in Wales by far. I enjoy the rugby and lots of others things in the town, there is always something to do if your bored in Port Talbot. Some people ask me where r u from and they say oh aye the 1 with the stinky steel works and I tell them it aint all about the scenery, it's the people that are living there -the kindness and the welcoming of the people. Thank you - diolch un fawr

Well its been 20 years now since i left, and whilst i have seen beauty all over the world, there is only one place i want to be and that is walking in Aberafan. The beach in all seasons,Afan Argoed in summer, fishing for rainbow trout from Velindre to Cwmafan, strolling around dinas, up and over Emroch to Goytre and up the valley to Bryn, Blaen Baglan and over the bwlch, and even a stroll up station road. The rest is rubbish but i luvs it!

Whenever I tell people I'm from Port Talbot they all associate it with the big, dirty, smelly Steel Works. I know the industry is a big part of our town but what about the beautiful scenery of Margam Park? Theres Afan Argoed, the beach... So much more than just an industrial town! But by far the best thing about Port Talbot is the people! Friendly, helpful and theres always a community spirit!

9 years of my life in baglan, where the sun only sometimes shines, where eskimos dont usually live, and nothing there realy rhymes, Like how can you rhyme Clydach with neath? They have nothin in common at all, and how can you rhyme ystralaferia, with blaen baglan primary school? Our chip-shops in baglan are lovely, Our footy we play here is grand, We even have some great huge mountains, and beaches all covered in sand

I have lived in this town man and boy and I promise I will never leave. It supplies my job at Corus which in turns supplies me with a wage so I can go to Station Road on a Friday night and meet my future wife! People are hard on this town but to me, there's nothing like it! 'Port Talbot - It's the way foward!'

Ann Moore (was Davies now residing in Stamford Lin.)
Port Talbot, remembering the sinter plant and mother putting washing out, we lived in Margam, and having to re do the washing because of all the red sinter dust! Hard work! Ivor's fish and chip shop at the rear of Margam Road, behind the old Coop store, having 4 pence worth of chips in a three corner bag! Evans Pies too, first class. Driving Steve, in Ferarri's Cafe Station Road mad, as we used to stay there for hours on a Saturday night just buying a bottle of coke cola! Those were the days. In Margam, everyone knowing everyone! It seems quite lifeless now, sad, but it is still I call it home. In particular remembering St Davids Church Margam with great fondness, Brownies, Guides, church choir, drama, panto's - to name a few activities I was involved with. So many characters. Still having lots of friends still there, all of whom I keep in touch with - will try to.

I left Port Talbot 15 years ago to work for military aircraft company in Yorkshire but find most of my time spent overseas. I miss Port Talbot and the people there. My perants house overlooked Port Talbots football club which on a Saturday I was able to watch the matches from my bedroom window. I spent many a good time working at the Afan Lido on my summer vacations from Uni and have great memories of the beach.

I returned to Port Talbot about 3 years ago and I could not beleive how much it as changed, the beach is not as I remember it. But as they say home is where the heart is and my heart is still in Port Talbot.

Terence (Tooze) Thompstone - Manchester
I was brought up in Dock Street Port Talbot in 1939. We lived opposite an RAF Camp where my mother met my step-father in the RAF. We lived in granny's house at No.2 with my uncles, aunts, cousins who also lived in Dock St a row of 26 terraced houses 2 up 2 down and was opposite the Black Mountains, saddletank engines, banks of railway sideings, Baldwin's steelworks, the tumps, beach, picking dewberries. I lived there until I was 4 years. I love Port Talbot to this day! Does anybody else remember Dock Street? Which was demolised some time ago? I had relatives who lived at Wharf Row, Sandfields estate. Ah! great days!

Beryl Mary Richards
I spent years away from the smoke ridden, iron ore covered pink town. The heart of the town beats in the people. Cannot beat it. 'Port Talboteez' as I call the local accent is a riot littered with one liners like 'innit luv'. If you have not lived here it is almost impossible to understand but it cracks me up. The humour here is so sharp it would cut steel. There are a load of good pubs. But also a lot of culture music and singing. Port Talbot Library is one of the best places I have ever been for digging up the obscure.

Sian Anderson - Port Talbot
A native of this town, I left, with great pleasure, to live in London. After 10 years in the metropolis, I found myself back in a town I had previously hated. However, I was now accompanied by my Londoner husband who instantly took to the town: pointing out its charms. Where else can you be on a couple of miles of beautiful, sandy beach or in luscious green valleys within minutes of your house? Yes, the heavy industry is a dominant feature of the town but these can be just viewed as the necessary means to live a very good standard of life. I think, judging by the enormous numbers of newcomers to the town,(those of whom I have met, seem to feel like we do), it's only the native Welsh who seem to look down on us a joke.
Tue Aug 16 13:00:17 2005

Cec. from Cymmer.
I love Port Talbot, it has a lot to offer visitors, there is a shame the fair went and other attractions on the sea front. I'm sure if someone could have invested in the sight a bit more, than just building houses. It could have become more attractive to visitors like it used to be.

We have Margam Park and Afan Argoed, The Ponds in Glyncorrwg, and the new cycle tracks and centre. The views all around the Afan Valley are great. The views along the seafront are very relaxing and to sit and enjoy the sea air.

If it does make you hungry and you can go and have great food in Port Talbot in a number of good pubs and fish and chip shops also a few Indian and Chinese places. There that says it all. Port Talbot and surrounding area's are great.

Chris, Porthcawl
Port Talbot is in my blood and will always be so. Memories of Sandfield School in Pendarvis Terrace in the 50's, then walking around Woolworths by the old marketat 12 years old listening to the Everley Brothers and early Elvis playing in the store. Waiting for a bus by Beach Hill when often 4 blue Thomas's buses would turn up at the same time full of people going to the great Abbey Works. Then down the beach in that longhot summer of 1959 watching the ships come in from all over the world...13 years old and swimming in the sea every day, riding the skid-cars in the fair, listening to Connie Francis and all the hits of that long hot summer bursting across the fair ground on warm summer nightsAnd the great works puffing away in this great steel town by the sea. My heart is never free of Port Talbot; she is always with me,and thank God for that.

I moved away from Port Talbot for a few years, and when driving past the steelmill on the motorway I would wind down the window smell the sulphur and the chemicals and think dreamily 'I'm home'. We all have a winj about it but the people there are warm and some of the best friends I have ever had live there. I think Velindre is gods little acre.

Was born in Neath Gen. and lived all my life in Cwmafan until I decided to emigrate cross the border. Love coming back home and always get a kick of going to my mams via top road and seeing the view cross the bay and then heading up the valley to home. Can't buy scenery like that in London.

Alex in London but from Port Talbot
Despite having lived in London for the past 6 years, home will always be Port Talbot! It's scruffy but the people are far friendlier than London folk, which is the most obvious thing I notice when I come home. I love the contrast between the harsh industrial skyline and the hills beyond, but best of all is Margam Park, Evans Pies and Franco's Fish Bar. But a plea to the local council - stop painting the town with left over British Steel Blue! Black or bottle green would do nicely. To everyone who was at St Joseph's sixth form 90-92, hi!

I'm now living in an English version of Port Talbot. On the south coast with its 'seaside'. Nothing tops good old PT though. I think Port Talbot is fab! It's the one place I return to and know that I'm home. PS. Hello Mam (I expect she's having coffee in Selections in Station road with Aunty Audrie as I write!!!)

Chris Jones - Cwmavon
Well what can I say about Cwmavon I have lived here now all my life I went to the school in Cwmavon. We have a Co-Op, fish shop, video shop everything is on hand in Cwmavon plus the YMCA great things on hand for us... So Cwmavon is the best village in Port Talbot.

Donald Thomas, West Vancouver, Canada
I left for Canada in 1957, prior to that, I used to be a member of the Port Talbot Wheelers Cycling Club. Almost 50 years later, I still take "Cycling" magazine to see how the Club is doing in the races, which is pretty good!! Congratulations to them all, and best wishes to any one in Port Talbot who can remember me.

Kerry Doyle - Baglan
I live in Baglan these days gone posh well that's how the oldies see it. Lived first 20 yrs in Sandfields, next 20 yrs in old Aberafon hopefully the next 40 yrs up in Baglan views over to the Mumbles. I work in Cardiff but could never envisage me living up here with the English/Welsh well that's what I call them.

It's funny to some but only those true Port Talbot people understand Port Talbot is home and always will be. We will all gripe the beach should have been developed, it was not we will live with it. The only thing I do miss is I remember when playgrounds were all over the borough from the steam roller park to poppy close park all the way up to the park at Pentyla. Now the kids have the streets and nothing but the streets. Here's me going off on one.

At the end of the day I love Port Talbot because all my memories are here I know you can take memories with you where ever you go but you can't take the smell of the works. I am thinking of bottling it and sending it to those of you that have moved away. I am sure EBAYers would pay for it.

Someone asked does anyone know where John Lemonheigh from Port Talbot is? I know he is now living in Velindre and has been for a couple of years.
Sat Mar 26 15:54:16 2005

Lewis from Taibach
I moved from Neath to Port Talbot a couple of years ago and I must say that even though the towns are only seperated by a few miles, people in Port Talbot are usually friendlier and their attitude is generally more easy going. I was a little apprehensive about moving here at first, mainly because of the pollution, but I would not move back to Neath now.

John Richard Jones from Warton, Lancashire
Whenever I am staying with friends in the area I take a look at how Port Talbot has changed by calling in rather than bypassing it on the M4. If the weather is good we will have a walk along the streets we used to walk along remembering what we did many years ago. Just passing somewhere can jog our memories.

During the early to mid 1970's I went to St. Joseph's School in Aberavon and lived in the Pyle area. One regular stopping off place for us to have a meal is the Lord Caradoc, which we know as 'The Palace', and if there are only a couple of us we often get chatting to others in there. I may seem like an outsider since I didn't pick the Welsh accent up very much when I lived here but can have a good chat about memories that are still clear.

These go back to the late 60's and early 70's before Heilbronn Way and The Aberafan Shopping Centre were constructed when there was a one way traffic system on the Aberavon side of the river by a shopping area which was always congested with cars, buses and pedestrians.

In these days there were two shopping centres; one on the main road (Station Road) and the other one was on the Aberavon side (Water Street) just over the river. I was often taken to Aberavon Beach and the Afan Lido for a day out since buses used to run from the top of Kenfig Hill to Aberavon Beach then, but sadly there is nothing much at this end other than a nice view across the bay now. It is a pity that nothing has been done with this vast space, but then with neighbouring areas like Porthcawl, the Vale of Glamorgan, Gower, etc. there was not much call for it. Parts of the area have become more modernised but some things have disappeared.

I am sure for many years with the M4 being a main route across South Wales I will be tempted to leave the M4 and drive through the Port Talbot area even if I am not staying in the area just to keep up to date and remember my childhood days.

Badger from Aberavon
For years I've wanted to leave this town, not because I hate it, but because there is so much to see in the world. I've travelled a fair few places, and what I've realised is that, despite the dirt, the smell, and the possibility of getting your head kicked in on a Saturday night, I love the bloody place.

Heinrich Ober-Mann, Berlin, Germany
My family are from Germany and moved to Newport during the war. 7 years after the war ended, my family moved to Port Talbot. I grew up there but as I got older, I decided that I should live back in Germany. The people in your great town are never false and always speak their minds. As a boy, I used to walk up Mynydd Dinas and watch the sunrise and the boats at the harbour. Such a great industrial town. Lots of very fond memories for me. Thank you.

I've been there about 10 years ago. I met wonderful, friendly people, I visited and walked to beautiful Margam. I hope that some day I'll be back there. But now, thanks for the memories!

I love Port Talbot!! I was born in Neath Hospital before it closed down and when I found out it was going to be knocked down I was so upset!! Because I live abroad I only get to come back home once or twice a year but I love walking along the beach with my mates and catching up on the latest gossip!!! xxxx

Victoria from New York
I left Port Talbot over ten years ago but I still call it home. I love walking along Old Baglan Rd on a summers day watching people mow their lawns, its so peaceful. Bet it has changed now. When I was there the best night club was the one underground inside the shopping center, I forget what it was called, it was right opposite Argos.
Mon Feb 21 18:13:09 2005

Katie, Port Talbot
It's so lovely walking across the beachfront in the winter or summer and being able to stop off for a drink in one of the many bars, such as the Four Winds Hotel for some food and a drink looking out towards Swansea Bay!
Sat Feb 12 17:34:54 2005

Ex-'Bravon, Neath
I lived in Port Talbot until I was nearly 60 when I moved to Neath. I still yearn for the old town every day, and although it's only a few miles away, I may as well be on the moon. I know people say Port Talbot's a dump, but it's my dump, and proud of it!
Tue Feb 8 12:59:32 2005

Rachel Baltes (Tancock) from Los Angeles
I love Port Talbot because even though I've been away in LA for 24 years my heart still belongs to Port Talbot. I never forget I'm Welsh. I still miss all the good food, good pubs and good friends. There's not a day that goes by that I don't think about PT. Love you - Port Talbot.

Mark Joseph - Port Talbot
Port Talbot or is it Aberafan? Just like New York so good they named it twice. I've lived here all my 37 years and don't think I would ever move out of the borough. We get plenty of knockers off people who just visit, surely they don't know what it's really like. Beautiful beach which is at last having a face lift, stunning countryside in Margam and the Afan Valley, and down to earth people.

Bernard Barton Kelowna , B.C. Canada.
It's been a while 25 years. But I used to like walking up the mountain, past the old air raid shelter, walking to Margam, and going to see the Aberavon Wizards play with Alan Martin, and going to the best fish and chip shop in town, in Rees Street, thanks for the memory.
Sun Oct 17 22:56:26 2004

Kay from Baglan
I love San Port Talbot cause it has much more than to offer young people than other towns. They have the beach, Afan Lido, Loads of youth facilities and the Cyber cafe. Also for the old age they have the Bay View and Labour clubs. Awesome.
Wed Sep 8 18:08:15 2004

Huw - Taunton
I still love the the 'old place' even though I left so many years ago. As I arrive at the Margam turn off, I feel I'm back home! The place has such a wonderful warm feel about it. I try and spend a few days every year walking the hills that I so enjoyed during my teens. I miss Saturday afternoon's watching the Wizards and try to travel to watch at least a couple of games every season.

Sian from Sandfields Port Talbot
I love the way that no matter what attractions we put in Port Talbot, all we will be known for is the steelworks which is a major downer for our town even though the steelworks is really important. Every time I leave Port Talbot, as soon as I near returning u can smell it. What a waste of a nice tidy place.

Ofcourse there are also the stunning mountains surrounding Cwmafan.Brilliant for walking or bike riding and last but certainly not least the river Afan that runs through the village.
