Pembroke Dock is a splendid place. My father was born and brought up there and my grandfather used to be headmaster of the old East End School in Pembroke. I spent some years in Pembroke Dock Grammar School in the 1950s. Roland Mathias was headmaster. He was also a celebrated poet and died fairly recently. I have such happy memories of that school. It strove to develop all dimensions of its pupils - academic, sporting and cultural.
Pembroke Dock has struggled in many ways to develop a new identity since the catastrophic closure of the Royal Naval Dockyard in 1926 although its role as an RAF base for Sunderlands was important in the 1940s and 1950s.
When I have returned on brief visits over the years I have seen many positive changes. Of course the approach to the town could be smartened up - but that applies to many other towns and cities as well. I'm sure that its splendid location and the character and spirit of those who live there will ensure that it thrives in the future.

Reading previous comments makes me proud to be a Dock girl. I have always felt privileged to have been raised in such a lovely safe part of Wales. However I agree with Joe Bloggs from Carmarthen, something has to be done about the entrance to the town it does look scruffy...

I have great fond memories living in the Dock, where my parents ran a business and went to school there. I still keep in touch with one or two people, but haven't returned there. It has changed a lot for the better, I've heard.

I have worked away for many years, but it's still nice to come home to the Dock and see friendly faces! I was schooled at the Cora - what a great school. My family are from Cosheston and I still live in Cosheston with my wife. Ok the town has had better times, and things will get better. I hope at least people in the Dock will say "hello", which is more than they do in many places. Also one or two good pubs...its what you make it .

OK guys - so you love living in P.D. So how about getting the council do do some thing about the entrance to the town. Just look at the scruffy area around the so-called London Rd Mall - that's a laugh! Then just further along the waste litter near the "shortcut" laying around...So, option two....if you're so proud of the scruffy place get out there and do something about it - such as clean it up.

1952 and 1953 were very good years. I was in the RAF at PD(Sunderlands). I bought a motorbike BSA 650 Golden Flash from Bowens in Narbeth and managed to tour the area a lot.
I love this place and have never been able to return for a visit. It is on my shortlist to do so, very soon.
I wish you all well at PD and give John Evans at the Museum my kind regards and best wishes. Tenby is on my list as well.

I have the most fondest memories of PD. I used to stay at my grandparents house around 3 times a year including the 6 weeks holidays for most of my childhood and I will always cherish the place, having a coke afloat in Browns Resturant and drawing the scenery up the hill. I have been back several times as an adult and feel and hope one day to live there. Well, if you dont dream,it wont happen.

I was born and brought up in Pembroke Dock. I lived with my gran in Dock Street, now known as 'Harbour Way'. I remember playing down the shore, paddling in the water, picking blackberries and climbing on the 'old wreck'(where the Asda store and car park are now) I remember picnics down the green and watching the men fishing. When I was in my 20's I moved to Tenby and years later I moved to Yorkshire, now I'm back in Pembrokeshire and it's great to be able able to visit the Dock again, it's within easy driving distance from where I live now. It's changed a lot since I was a kid, I loved it the way it was then, but however much it changes it will always be home.

I lived in Hundleton & PD from the age of 4 to 16. I've not been back in years but went there last weekend. What I like about Pembrokeshire are the beautiful beaches such as Barafundle bay, pleasant towns like Tenby & Saundersfoot, and of course Pembroke Castle. I was interested in the changes to the town. The Barracks seem to have closed down now, which is a pity, but there are a lot of new supermarkets and the library has moved to new premises. It was sad to see that the pubs and bookies seemed to be the most thriving businesses in the town, but PD's history is one of boom, bust and boom again, so hopefully, good times are just around the corner.

(no tht was my second love)As my dad does autograss racing we travel and I don't get to spend the weekends, holidays and some weeks at PD, I would like to say if you ever go there don't take it for granted. Even though I left the 'Dock' years ago, my mother and step-father still live there. My father used to run the Bush Hotel, which I noticed is now a block of flats. I was part of the final year that just made both Coronation Lower and Upper before they moved us to Bush Comp. Still keep in contact with one or two of the old teachers.
Must agree with Greg Ralph, the old town has seen better days, it seemed that the only activity on an evening was the pub and as I don't drink (the Bush cured me of that), bit of a prob!
Might come home in the summer (best time!) and see the folks!

How chuffed I am to find Pembroke Dock has its own little love corner. PD born, London bred, my family moved away (from Clarence St) to London a week before my 4th birthday so most of my memories are from visits back to the grandparents. But I remember the Friday indoor market from the 70s - I expect it's gone now - surely a fore runner of the Farmer's market. And I reckon I got my lifelong love of a man in uniform from the convoys of lorries and jeeps of soldiers streaming past the top of our road. Sigh.

I have recently visited the town of Pembroke Dock. Whilst being in the town area my car regreatably caught fire this was ataprox 9.30 in the evening after calling 999, the fire brigade were with me within 2 minutes which I was amazed at, on talking to the driver he informed me that these men were part time fire fighters.
I think these boys do a very good job and they were quicker than the firemen we have in Reading. Hats off to them.

I came from London in 1949...
spent three yrs in PD went to school there
until 1952 , after my mother died I returned to London.
Through the years I have arrived in California, I do not think there are too many weeks go by when I do not think of my youthful years there in PD.
Why are you so rushful to change it? How selfish of me to ask that, but we who have left would love to come back to the way we remember.
I love the view from Barracks Hill and the quiet conclusion of the little cove in Waterloo, oops just remembered birdacage walk? Anyone out there old enought to remember?

Can't wait for the Dock to get the major developments it's so long been promised.

I like Hobbs Point- if you can avoid the local "sea-urchins" & boats, it's a great place to catch fish, day or night. I fished there 5 consecutive days recently, never "blanked" once, best fish a 3 1/2 lbs Sea Bass, cooked 2 hours later with delightful local potatoes & salad- superb, particularily as I now live inland & wild Sea Bass is unobtainable!

I moved to Pembroke Dock in 1963 from Llanteg Amroth, I went to Coronation school in Upper Meyrick Street where I met lots of wonderful people and was made welcome. I met and married and brought up four wonderful children who all went to schools in Pembrock Dock. I find that all the residence of the town very friendly and have always welcomed visitors warmly. You will not find a friendlier place in Pembrokeshire.

My last visit to PD was a shock. There is a moribund air about the place and it is enormously difficult to compare it with the vibrant town of my youth in the forties and fifties. Not withstanding this reprehensible decline, it is never too late - if the locals and even ex-pats offer encouragement to those who have some influence over its future I'm certain it can be saved.
Two other prime examples of towns which have risen from the dead are - Hay on Wye and locally Narberth. Well done everyone concerned and especially Beeb Wales for publicising it - please keep it up.

As a resident of Pembroke Dock it is wonderful to see my home town being given credit on your web-site for being a town in its own right. Too often are we just an after thought or referred to as Pembroke, especially where the ferry companies are concerned. The Naval background of our town should never be forgotten and lives on in the town’s name. I fear though that with the amount of shops and businesses closing, people may see Pembroke Dock as a ghost town with no future. It is pleasing to see that the council are willing to invest money into a marina development in the town.
I also believe that the future lies in the hands of the children of the town who are educated in the wonderful schools that we have. I must sing the praises especially of Pembroke Dock Community School whose facilities could beat most schools not even just in Pembrokeshire but Wales too.
Pembroke Dock will not become a forgotten town whilst the likes of your wonderful web-site continue to promote us. A lovely piece on our town – keep up the good work BBC!

I'm really glad that the old dockyard is finally starting to be treated with a bit of respect. The Pater Church and the old dockyard buildings would be jewels in the crown of any town in the country, and they have been scandalously neglected for years. The day will soon come when visitors arriving on the ferry will want to stop much much longer in "the Dock" and not just drive straight on through
