I go back to Neath as often as I can to visit family and friends I used to say I don't miss the place only the people in it, but now it seems I miss the place as much.

The Gnoll grounds are as lovely as ever, but Victoria gardens was a disappointment when I was there in April this year, I hope that the bandstand is going to be restored and not pulled down I have many happy memories of playing on there as a child and later listening to the bands play on a Saturday afternoon. Oh how I miss the green grass of home.

Just found this site and felt I had to write about Neath. I left in 1969-70. I worked in Brooks the shoe repair shop in old market street from 1965 when I finished in Cadoxton school, sadly the shop is gone and when you walked in, it always looked like time had stood still and never changed.

I still have a sister and brother living there. Our family lived up in Bryncoch in the forest. I miss the area and have many happy memories to this day. Neath is a great town and my Russian wife loves it when we go there to look around and see the Gnoll Park and gardens and other nice places.

My wife Marina has many photos of Neath and other places where we visit and shows them to the world on her Russian internet site. Neath will always be very special to me.

Castell Nedd - My town for 31 years. I skated every curb and crack there was in that town and I'm going to do the same again next time I'm back. I think I'll have a few pints in my locals too afterwards.

I grew up in Tyn-yr-heol Road and went to the school at the top of the road. I went to Brownies and Guides in Bryncoch. Miss Gibbons was leader with Loot, daughter Judith. My father Wyndham Lewis was a Cadoxton man and my mother Margery Powis grew up in Llantwit Road. Remember going to Neath Rugby with Dad and cricket in Briton Ferry, who my father played for. (Tiger Lewis) Left arm fast bowler. Great Happy Days. All the Powis Family went to 26 Llantwit Road, my Nana's every Saturday.

I was brought in a village just outside Neath. I used to work in the market where everybody was friendly - and still are. I remember Bernard Parker, he was a very good sketcher and very friendly and polite. Went over to Neath a few weeks ago and my first stop was the market which has hardly changed since I worked there 30 plus years ago. The faggots and peas are still lovely.

Lovely homely and so clean Neath, yes I know of the Murder Stone(very sad tale). Say Hello to Rob Jones in Cadoxton and Janet francis in Pen-y-Dre, Neath. Loved all the waterfalls and the walks in the forest accessed behind Cadoxton. Also remember a good fish/chippy in Neath along with the Indian restaurant called The Plaza.

Neath has defined my character. Tony Grunt and his epic pub "The Duke" has been the highlight of many brilliant nights in Neath. The pub, which happens to be the oldest in Neath, welcomes a variety of people and does not try to be something it's not. Ripped chairs, dust, cobwebs, walls decorated with band flyers and a dark, damp atmosphere adds to the authenticity of the pub.

Neath is great! The bricked town centre looks beautiful and we have a good selection of quality shops, including the wonderful market. Victoria Gardens, great place for resting tired feet after lots of shopping. We have a diverse mix of people from all walks of life, most of them are pretty friendly too! The Gnoll is another fantastic place we're very lucky to have. Neath is not a bad place to live at all and it just keeps getting better.

No place like Neath. Fond memories of Gnoll Park (especially jogging from 2nd to 4th ponds), Victoria Gardens, Cefn Saeson, sausage and chips from Opels, and of course the various pubs. Saturday nights were the best of all - in market tavern with 10 different rugby teams squashed together wating to be served by one of the two barpersons - then one of the rugby players has too much and spills his pint on a local rival - then all hell breaks loose. Then off to the Scabby Abbey or Dark Arch with the stink of beer and spew all over you and still managing to pull one of three women that were there. Those were the days!

I was brought up in Aberavon but did my trade at the metal box. I played for Neath Colts for a season and have always regarded it as one of my greatest experiences, especially when we got to play on the Gnoll. Players I remember, Rob Mogford, Mike Jenkins, Gareth Evans, Bevan, Jeff Landeg, to name a few. As many of the people have mentioned the people of Neath are friendly and they made this Aberavon boy feel very welcome. My regards to anyone who may remember me.

I was born in Resolven, then moved to Glynneath as a child. Neath was our 'going out' town. I married an Englishman and left Cadoxton, where I lived then, and since then have lived all over the world, Singapore, Dubai, K.L., Bahrain. Thirty years of wandering, but, it's the Neath Valley, and good old Neath that comes to mind when the word 'Home' is said. The Ritz in Skewen on Saturday nights, The Eyes of Blue were 'the' band. The Town Hall dances, September Fair. Llangatwg School youth club on Wednesdays and Fridays, Wimpy burgers and milkshakes on Friday lunchtimes on a break from Tech. The Bluebell pub! The disco down where the pictures used to be, can't remember the name. The cafe next to the Gwyn Hall where all the 'in crowd' hung out on Friday nights and Saturday afternoons. Walking up the Gnoll with boyfriends, and running to catch the last bus home at something like 10.45! Good days, simpler times.

Just posted my memories, but wondered if anyone can remember the name of the Indian restaurant, now no more, just past Stockham's corner, walking towards the Melyn, on the RHS at the top of one of the streets there? My mum, sisters and I used to go there late some nights, but for the life of me, I can't recall the name. I'm talking about the 70's. I recall they were closed for a time because of a cholera scare! Not that that fazed us, we still ate there. Here's hoping someone can remember the name.

I had to come to Neath to find the most beautiful person I have ever met and married her there in 1978. Her name was Daphne Abbott (daughter of Bill & Jean Abbott) from the Melyn. She went to the Melyn Junior School, Neath Girls Grammar School, and later to UWIC where we met. She lived in Bryn Road. She made my life a treasure and I was so proud to have had her as my wife. She was always madly proud of being from Neath. Sadly, she died last December(2007).I am destroyed. Strangely, I find myself drawn more and more to Neath - perhaps it is just to hear her accent again. Anyway, Neath is a fantastic place filled with lovely people.

Rach - Australia

Spent my childhood in both Australia and Tonna. I just love Neath. I love to go back to visit, I do feel like I have "come home" people are so friendly and just lovely.

I remember Bernard the local tramp, I was young at the time, but he used to smile and say hello. he really was a local fixture. I remember coming back to neath for a visit and him not being around anymore. I always wondered what happened to him! My stepdad Jeff Campbell (Jock) was a regular fixture at the Edward and still talks about his days on the darts team there!

Some of my favourite memories of Neath are, walking along the canal from the basin right up through neath as far as Zoars. So peaceful! Chips from Opels .. yuuuuum! Horseriding on the Wennallt and the forestry up Fairylands Road, drinking lemonade, and eating crisps while paddling in the river next to the Dulais rock whilst the parents chatted on a summer's evening, getting a bag of mixed sweets from the sweet shop in Neath market....

My favourite pubs in town now are The Duke and The Bear...the atmosphere is very relaxed and although the bands are generally young enough to be my grandchildren I enjoy most performances...The Bear in the days of Stuart Evans was brilliant, with totally off-the-wall live shows by Roy the Message and DJ Jay, although the Evanses are now retired the Bear still has something very welcoming about it.

Rowe. The September fair on the old fairground used to be fantastic. I remember going with my father before the last war and saw the Globe of Death which was like the Wall of Death only a trellis of metal strips when there was a lion strapped into a sidecar, this was more exciting than the Wall. Two years ago a friend and I went to the fair at Pickering North Yorks and saw the Wall of Death, speaking to the owner afterwards he said he knew about the Globe. Neath Fair used to have stalls on all the streets in the centre.

I lived at Graig Parc from age of two years went to Abbey Infants, Skewen Lower, Neath Tech until 1945. My father sold Paraffin and charged batteries until he sold the charging plant to Dick Brown down by the Abbey ruins. He also had a breakers yard up the old road. When I moved from there in 1969 to Wakefield Skill Centre as an instructor who should join us but a John Matthews from Tyllwyd.

I'd like to say hello to Jeremy Jachimiak (Jackson). Yes I do remember your brother, his ex wife and daughter Kelly. It's a small world Neath because I used to look after your mother many years ago too, at Hafod home in Wenham Place, Neath, up by Dyfed Road. I recognised your surname, and then you mentioned Ireland it clicked. Many times I remember Marjorie waiting for her parcels of ciggies that you used to send to her.

Boy I still miss going to Neath market, after all this time living away in various locations in England. Spent my formative years growing up in the Cimla. Used to love catching the bus into Neath with my sisters and having faggots and peas in the market.Don't suppose many of my old school friends from the Cimla still live there now. Such wonderful memories of a perfect childhood. The people and places will remain in my heart forever.

I was six-years-old when we moved to Aberdulais Cefen yr Allt school then Cad. Before the 39-45 war my mam bought all her meat in Neath Market from the Bill Rees stall - a few months ago I went to the market to find Jeff, son of Bill, still running the same stall. Is this a record? It is still a wonderful market, an institution.

I never lived in Neath, however my mother was born and raised at Bryn Gwyn Penywern Hill in the Rhyddings just before Alexander Road. I went originally to Neath technical School and was then transferred to the grammer school when it became Neath Grammer Technical School and the old school became Neath Technical College. I have the original photo of form 5R of the school as in one of the town memory books. Many of my school friends I can recall Daryl Thomas, Richard Spilsbury (also Gregory), Russell Williams, Richard Dobson, Ian Woolcock, Terry Noonan, Roger Thomas (Bomber), Alan Langan, Gerald Roderick, Anthony Cockwell, Richard Edwards and many others. The form master was Reg Morgan.

Left school in 1963 and worked in many different locations in South Wales before finally ending up as lecturer in construction back in Neath College from 1980 to 2005. Had many happy times and fond memories of teaching at the college. My colleagues there included Malcolm Terry, Rex Davies, Lynford Jones, Wynne Pritchard, trevor Francis, Carroll Culpan, Ken Gibbs, Ken Richards and many more. Now retired and living in Bridgend. My sister lives in The Hollins, Cimla.

Vernon Richards from Neath

I have lived in Neath all my life - nearly 76 years. I have always loved Neath from the early days of swimming and fishing in the canal and walking up the Gardeners Lane area and up the historical Brunel's incline. There are so many different walks one can take all with a historical interest.

In earlier times Neath was considered one of the most favourite shopping centre where any kind of household appliances you could have the choice of purchasing. This includes the cattle market and of course there have always been the Neath annual Fair which has always been a big favourite. I do find now, however, over the past years the shopping choices have deteriorated, apart from a couple of main stores the smaller and specialist shops are closing down seeming to make way for less interesting establishments such as charity shops, greeting card shops, mobile phone shops and the like.

I don't know if the private shopkeepers are fighting against the high rates involved or what, but even shops that have been very popular and never short of custom but seemingly they still close down. I would love to see the town regaining its place as a shopping centre and not having to go to Port Talbot or Swansea for purchasing the most basic requirements for the home.

What can you say about Neath that hasn't already been said before, it's so comforting to belong to a town such as Neath. The people take you in and cwtch you (so to speak) I was born here and intend to live a long, long time here before I am laid to rest.

I agree that the Duke is a little gem of neath - it's like the pub in Harry Potter - if you dont know it's there you'll walk right past! Personally I love the Gnoll as well - although what a big boo boo it was knocking down Gnoll House - I mean the cellars are nice and all but imagine how it could've been now with National Trust funding to do it up or something. Ahhh well - the seventies concrete jungle architects had to have their way!

Thanks Brian Warlow for your memories of McCarthy's. His original shop in the 1930s was in Wind Street, I had forgotten he had moved to Water Street. I did not have personal contact with him, as you did, but remember him as a polite courteous obliging man. He also lived in Wind Street in a house opposite the Ancient Briton pub which backed on to the Old Fairfield.

Thanks for those memories Brian Warlow. I had to put my thinking cap on for a moment to remember the shop in Water St as his original shop was a small place in Wind St., next for Fraley's.

The shop in Water St became vacant when a butchers shop which was there moved to other premises, and McCarthy took over.

I do not have personal memories of the McCarthys but always remember them as polite obliging people. They lived in Winds St. when I lived in Neath, their house was opposite the Ancient Briton pub. I left Neath when joining the RAF in 1940, returning only for visits to my relatives!

In response to the comment by Rebecca Williams of Jersey Marine, I remember Bernard Hamilton Parker from when I worked as a library assistant at Neath Public Library in the 1960s. Born and raised in the Neath area, went home last August, first place to head for was the Market, Faggots/n/Peas then everything I could buy on the little Welsh stall. A bunch of picture t-towels to hand out to my friends, anything to do with coal figures, Welsh dolls, you name it I took it back to Canada. I'm proud to fly my Welsh flag in my garden, and have a copy of it specialy made from glass that fits right into my window, get so many compliments about it, and a great chance to tell everyone about my great heritage, Wales and the beautiful town I lived in. I love Neath and everything about it, one day I will come home, as there will always be a welcome in the hillside.

I left Neath in 1973 -- many years ago -- but Neath will always be in my heart. Everytime I visit Wales, I always drive through Neath and the old familiar warm feelings come flooding back. Neath Girls Grammar school, the Gnoll Park, Victoria Park Gardens and the pubs. I remember a discotheque somewhere close to Cimla Hill, which at the time, seems like the center of the universe. Throughout my "temporary stay" abroad, I have always dropped by the market to catch up on the gossip with my cousin Bethan. Every so now and again I meet someone from Neath (via my work) and the nostalgia returns. Some weeks ago when Neath features in Catherine Jenkins' "Songs of Praise" -- not a progam I regularly watch -- I was overcome with homesickness and I felt like packing my bags and taking the first 'plane back "home".

Neath has many characters, but I think one of the biggest and best known was Bernard Hamilton Parker, the local tramp who walked the streets of Neath for many years and would often sit outside the post office on Windsor Road. Bernard lived with my parents Geoff and Babs in the Albert Pub Windsor Road for many years, then he moved with them to High Street Swansea, then Jersey Marine. Sadly Bernard is no longer with us, but I will always remember him as being the most intelligent, kind and honest person I've ever met. I wonder how many other Neath people can recall him too.

Neath is an awsome place to grow up! The Neath valley is even better though but I may be biest? Neath is a small town with huge heart. More and more developments are happening and this is helping Neath town to compete with other towns nearby. The new bus station is user frindly and looks amazing, victoria gardens is to have a 'face' lift and a new hotel and pubs in the the town are making Neath appeal to a wider audience. As a kid I would love going to Neath on the bus from Resolven and get your chips from the local chippy and sit in the park on a nice spring/summer/autum day and relax! (not winter; we all know what the winter is like in Wales)!

Hi from sunny New Zealand. Never knock Neath, its a great place, a cracking town centre the Gnoll grounds the hills all around. Some of the best rugby on display! Only a few miles from the beach & the mountains, what more could you ask for. I hope to come back one day so it can be said of me, born in Neath, lived in Neath & buried under Neath. Bye for now, Cymru am byth.

Sally Grant from Neath, now in Rugby
I love Neath and always will. I regularily visit, to see most importantly my Mum and my muckers!!! The feeling of excitement still fills my bones when I pass the welcome to Wales sign, and then driving down the M4, pass the steelworks, there are no words to describe how good it feels to nearly be home in 'Neath'. The September fair is not to be missed, the smell of pork, apple and stuffing rolls, the sound of the fair rides and the kids screaming faster, the banter from the stall men all trying to sell you a good deal! Its best at night when the lights illuminate the sky. Wow I cant wait for September! The people are fantastic, the place is so, so beautiful from mountains to seaside in 20 mins! I love it and miss it so much. I will move home one day :)

The best thing about the Neath and the surrounding area is the vast range of outdoor adventure activities you can try.The best way of seeing the countryside. We used Call of the Wild to take us canyoning at the top of the Neath Valley - great.

Neath is so cool! I went to Alderman Davies Primary. I miss it there. We had school sleepovers and every Friday we'd have a thing callen golden time. When we could have a funny afternoon. I'm in year 8 now in Dwr-y- Felin. I also miss all of the teachers. I try to see them as much as I could like on inset days. I went off school to help them with their school production. And I had permission from the school! Fab! When I was in year 6 I sang in the choir with Katherine Jenkins! Well my mum knows her since she was 3! But I didn't. I kinda know her lol bye!

Hi Ross, How are you? And Becca too. There's something very special about Neath. The scenery, the valleys, the Gnoll, not too far from the Gower, or the Brecon Beacons. Yes, I still think about it regularly. About the only time I didn't was when I lived in HK. But now back in England, my sons want to know why I ever moved away!

As a child living in Pontrhydyfen,if we had any serious shoping to do then we got on the bus to Neath! We inevitably ended up in the Market and always had some cockles with weak vinegar and pepper. We would not go home until we had eaten lunch also in the Market -- faggots and peas -- If anyone reads this would you please send me the recipe. Nothing like them at least in this part of New Zealand where I have lived for the past 42 years.

Moved here just over a year ago from North Cornwall. By far the most friendly set of people I have met in a long time. Scenery is great, and the town has everything we need, and if not, Swansea is very close. The pubs are great for food, although I haven't gone out in the evenings yet. (Nervous Englishman you see). My wife has settled in fine and my son has settled into school very well and has aquired a nice accent to go with it. I whole heartedly recommend this area, and every week we find something new to do. Our favourite is the Gnoll woods and estate. Must finish exploring!!

I moved to Neath from Port Talbot and would never go back to live in Port Talbot, only to visit family and friends .I love the friendly people, and the town has so much to offer. Everyone I meet have always got the time to say hello, The Gnoll is such an excellent place for families and even people on their own can enjoy themselves. A must to visit is Katies Kitchen and Coles meats, all in the market and Jackies Bakery ,all the flavours you need in one place, give me more Neath anyday.

Neath is easily the coolest place in Wales. The young kids are all very well maintained and their jewellery always matches. They have a strong sense of family and community, and chez Jeff they have their parties in marquees.

Sarah Giles (nee Cassidy) Auckland New Zealand
I grew up in Neath, and emigrated with my family to New Zealand, in late 1980 (age 14). I was heartbroken. I finally returned back in 1998, and felt like I'd never left. There are many special things about Neath, the hills, the green, etc, but most of all, it's the people that I miss. Everybody knows everybody. Here in New Zealand, you can live in a street for 20 years, and never know you're neighbour. Kiwis are friendly, and they play good rugby, but they'll never match the heart's of Neath. Will miss you always!

I Love Neath, I miss the friendly people and the Best Fish/n/Chips in the world, I miss chats over the fence with the neighbours, I miss our local market and the fact you can still walk around in the town, take our shopping bags into our local pubs and chat with everyone. its not something you do in Canada everyone has a car joined to their hip, i love the fact that there are not hundreds of drive/thru,s selling junk food, I love Neath and everything about it, i love and miss all my family to who are all still in the Neath area and always will be..

After working in Port Talbot for a year I finally appreciate how beautiful Neath is. It has such wonderful nature and history. I now live in Tonna and look forward to coming home everyday. Port Talbot has no atmosphere, just walk into Neath market and you are surrounded by it.

Ray From Aberdulais Neath
The Views from the hills around Neath are fantastic. From the top of Cefn Morfudd you look out over the town of Neath towards Mumbles Head and if you look north you have views all the way up the Neath Valley or up the Dulais Valley to the Carmarthen Fans. Again there are fine views from Hir Fynydd back over Neath and out to the coast. Wonderful place.

I have some very good friends from Neath, well I suppose you might aswell call them my adopted family. I was best man at my mate Gav's wedding back in August 2000.

Couldn't agree more, the people there are some of the friendliest I've ever met. Not to mention the beauty of the Dulais falls and scenic walks.

Also the free flowing ale in the Rock , always went down well ! I hope to visit Neath again very soon...

Neath still offers a quality of life - friendly people, a splendid shopping town; you can sit down in the market and eat faggots. It has kept its character and tradition and upon leaving the town you enter some of the most beatifull countryside in Wales - a trip along the A465 to into the vale of Neath is a truly breathtaking sight. Neath has a lot to offer; a mainline railway station and close to the M4. Go for it Neath, we are the best and of course the all blacks rugby club! NEATH NEATH NEATH NEATH AND ALSO THE GREAT SEPTEMBER FAIR THE STREETS COME ALIVE AND PEOPLE STILL COME FROM MILES TO VISIT IT DONT MISS IT MAKE IT A DATE. JOHN

Well what can I say, from a little boy I have loved Neath. Lived most of my life in the Cimla and I went to the Gnoll School. My mum and dad still live in Cimla and I visit as often as I can. One day myself and my wife will move home - I do miss it very much. It was my job that took me away as I served in the Royal Marines for 23 years. Believe it or not I still get home sick after all these years I do miss it very much - what a great town.
