Elaine W from Pembroke Dock made a comment about the "Chinese Shelter". If Elaine is referring to the one in Hamilton Terrace, I used to live opposite the "shelter" next door to the Starboard Club. I remember well the local town drunk...over 50 years ago being taken away by the town policemen for being drunk and incapable.

It was for a sad circustance that I knew Milford Haven and the people; but I had the opportunity of returning in 3 occasions more and certainly, providing that I can...I will return! Because its possible to feel the sea, the green of the field and the fondness of its inhabitants. Thanks Milford.

Have decided to call it a day, workwise, and I am now living on the Algarve (Praia da Luz) in Portugal with my partner June. We love it here, will spend the rest of our days here, can't be bad, lager 99 cents a litre, sunshine, never really cold, just chilly on times.

I'm a Milford Boy through and through. Moved to the USA only seven months ago after living in Cardiff for four years, Coventry for six years. I loved my time in all the places I lived but there is nothing like home.
You don't fully appreciate that until you know it's not so easy to come home. I think back to the time when I was growing up off North Road and messing around down the woods and Black bridge. Having Sandy haven, a crazy coastal path walk from Hakin, and then spending most of my late teens between the Starboard and the Nelson. Great days and I can't wait to fly home soon to see me mam... Love Milford...it's my home!

I grew up in Herbrandston. Left there to live in the USA when I was 23. Miss the chippys and the beautiful Welsh coast. Lots of good old memories from my youth with my cousins and brothers.
Lots of good memories of dances at Roch, Masonic Hall in Haverfordwest...going out with the girls and having FUN! Went to the Central School with Dawn Cullen, Angela Dinardo, Erica(?) from Steynton...she lived on a farm across from the 'Horse and Jockey'. Good times! Thanks Milford and Haverfordwest and wherever else I roamed.

Although I left Milford 18 years ago, I will always be a Milford girl. It has changed so much over the years, it offers a lot more for everyone who lives there and everyone who visits. I have some great memories from there.

I left Milford in 1983, lived in Plymouth for a few years and came back (as we all seem to do) in 1988. Moved out again in 1997 and ended up on the other side of the river. I hated growing up in Milford as everyone knew everyone else and if you did anything your parents would know about it before you even got home! Looking back, that was a good thing and I wish life could go back to that time where we were safe to go out on our bikes to Sandy Haven or to play out in the street. As we got older, the youth club and then the nelson, the starboard and the chinese shelter were the places to be seen. Those were the days! You don't realise what you've got until it's gone - so very true.

I left Milford in 1978 but have many happy memories of my time growing up there during the 1970's. I still think of it as 'home' though I've not lived there for 30 years!
When I was a kid my grandfather, John Utting, was a skipper on the trawlers, and most of my relatives worked in the fishing industry, then in terminal decline.,
I remember taking short cuts through the docks with my school mates, during the long and always hot summer holidays. We would stop off at the ice house,a large red bricked building where massive slabs of ice were hauled along on conveyor belts by men with lethal looking metal hooks. If we hung around long enough we'd be given shavings of the stuff wrapped in newspaper to quench our thirst! Ahh....such happy days!
It was the most idyllic place to grow up in, though at the time I did'nt really appreciate how fortunate I was to live there.

I was born in Pill Milford Haven 1940. I am one of eight children all born in Pill. We are somewhat scattered now, but all remain proud to be Welsh-born. Three live in Gloucester Eng. One in Australia. One in Brighton Eng. Twin sisters still reside in Milford. I always make a point of visiting there when I go home. I attended North Road Board School and see it no longer exists. As children we all loved to go to the beaches, Tenby, Saundersfoot, Little and Big Haven. There are none to compare anywhere. I was there last year and saw many changes, my favourite has always been the walk along the Rath from Pill past Slip Hill and all the way to the bridge and now shopping centre at the railway station area.

I was born in Milford Haven. We left to live in Chester June 1962. We have lived in Chester for 45 years but Milford Haven remains the place closest to our hearts.Gus Betty referred to by Pete Daniel, Wiltshire Jan 2nd 2007 was my cousin. David Crofts, Canada, March 25th 2008, is my brother. The world is getting smaller all the time.

I left Milford in 1973 to follow my new life in the oil industry. Prior to that I had worked in the family business (Crofts Garage). I love Canada and am proud to be Canadian but given the chance I would end my days back in Milford. The weather might not be as good as other places I have lived but the town and the people are the best. If you could just cut the cost of living by about 50% I would be back in a flash. One of the other posts mentioned "Gus Betty" at the swimming pool..he's my cousin.

omg I miss Milford even tho I live in the place I wanted to for about 12 years. Miss walking down the road and knowing every other person you see - that's what I call home - somewhere you will never forget and always think of no matter where you are in the world. I will always love the views, beaches, and lively nightlife. Go there you will never want to leave...

I left MH in 1987 to go to university and I`m so glad I did! The last time I came back was back in 2006 after my father passed way and the town still retains its small town mentality - bigoted, narrow minded and never forward looking. Unfortunately it always will be - thank God for the A4076!!

Milford Haven is the place where I went to school, and where I left my heart when I married and moved to Gloucestershire in 1974. I used to go to the youth club on a Tuesday, and on a Saturday afternoon, I would meet my friends in Rabiottis, where we would all have a hot blackcurrant or a coke float. Before the fishing industry was wiped out in Milford, my grandfather, father and uncles were all trawlermen (the Beamish family) so Milford is well and truly ingrained in my blood. And even though I have lived away for many years, I still call it home.

I love my home town - we live in the settlements of Jordanston near Neyland. I have two sisters and a brother One lives in Hook and the other lives in Rosemarket and my brother lives in Milford. We came to Qatar to be with the family which is Claire our daughter, son-in-law Peter, and Amy our granddaughter and Kate just arrived. We also have my daughter in Carmarthenshire...Paula and son-in-law Aled, and my grandson Dylan, who we miss dearly. But thanks to webcam I can see them.
We have been in the Middle East for three years - it's ok but when you've got family at home you miss them. I have got to write this to my daughters - with all the thanks and love for the wonderful people you are - with deep gratitude for how good you are to us, how kind, loving, how generous with your hearts and time. May your lives unfold with ease and grace. May you find joy serenity and love and may all the opportunities you dream of be yours. I wish you happy endings, happily ever afters, friends, companions, and spouses who treasure you and treat you with tenderness love and respect, and children as exceptionally wonderful as you are. If you have children like mine - you will be indeed be blessed.

I brought my wife back for her fist visit to Wales and Milford in August and she really enjoyed it. As for me it was great to be back home again. We got to check out my old stomping grounds and the house I lived in before moving to Canada. I even found out that the home next to the fire hall was being renovated by the brother of my cousins lady friend. Small world as I used to go there all the time growing up as my best friends dad was the fire chief. The docks have changed but it still feels like I never left. See you in 3 years.

I went to school in Milford in my teens and I was lucky enough to be in the town band and was paper girl of the year - I think around 1975 - I loved living in the countryside and by the sea. Going down to the Rath in the summer with all my friends and swimming in the pool was amazing - my Uncle Eddie and Aunty Inga lived there and I really loved my paper round - there was a real feeling of community - I am going to Fishguard next week for half term and am looking forward to visiting some familiar places!! Happy happy memories. I was Nicola Moore then - if you find the paper cutting!

As a lad I used to stay with my grandparents in Robert St. Every day I would take a sack, go down to the fish market to where they threw broken fish boxes, fill up my sack, climb all the way back up the hill so my grandparents would have enough fire wood to see them through the winter.
The rest of the day was mine. What a fantastic place to be free and young. I loved to sit on the hill by the swimming pool and watch the Sunderland Flying boats touch down, then then take off again. But the thing that gives me the most pleasure is to recall the couple who lived opposite - Mr and Mrs Sam Britton, two of the most beautiful people I have ever met in 70 years.

Always been loud and proud (to be Welsh) but what more can you wish for than to grow up in a country and more importantly a town that offers you everything! I am happy I have seen some of the world but cannot and will not forget where I come from. Spent my childhood days raoming the historic ruins of the fort. Spent my summers roaming the coastline, discovering beaches (and inlets) that aren't even on the map! How lucky am I. They say people it is God's country, I say they are right

Escaped from London three years ago - love it here; feel so safe; welcomed by the friendly people. Beautiful surroundings and peacefulness - as many things to do and see as you could want (at my fairly advanced age anyway!) Miss family members of course...but they seem to spend lots of time here with us now! I've been around the world to lots of lovely places, but I want to stay here forever.

I was born and grew up in Milford, and it was a brilliant place. I now live in New Zealand, but my folks are still in Hakin. The best friends I've ever had were all made in Milford, and I miss the place a lot. It's only when you're miles away from the place that you realise how nice Pembs actually is, and how much fun I had there. Believe it or not, I really miss places like The Nelson & The Starboard -there's nothing like that here!

Milford Haven is probably one of the best places to grow up in anyone could wish for. From the beaches (no age worries) to the chinese bush shelter, the Torch, and the pubs. When ever I go home I can go out, walk into a pub and see someone I know. Pure heaven!

I was born in Milford haven, and still have alot of family there. We moved to Hythe in Southampton in 1983, but we still return frequently to visit family. Always remember hanging around with Kate Sprowell, Nicola Ford and Sally-Ann Newt in Hakin Infant School, and later around the chinese shelter on the front. Very fond memories of Milford, and Galiswick beach, wading out to the caves. Will always be home.

John Tucker, Middletown, RI, USA
I was in the U.S.Navy, stationed at U.S. NAVFAC, Brawdy from December 1975 to June 1978. I was the Navy Liaison to John Gale's classes at Hakin Junior School during that time. I enjoyed visiting the students talking about Navy life and telling "sea stories". The class trip to Plymouth was a lot of fun. Milford is a nice town and I enjoyed my visits there. I asked my future father-in-law's permission to marry his daughter in Milford Haven (Judy is from Penarth.) The Seabees constructed a bike rack for the school in 1977 and after the presentation the students thrashed us in a game of rounders. Who thought you could hit the ball in any direction?! John and his wife Margaret treated me as family and made me very welcome. It is the people that make a place what it is and I will always remember my visits to Milford Haven.

I lived in Milford Haven in the mid to late 50s and although would never return I remember the town very well.
In 1957 when the Robert Limbrick foundered off the Island of Mull with the loss of 12 men, "For those in peril on the sea" (if that is the correct name)was sung at assembly in Milford Haven Grammar School (North Road, Mr Tidswell being the headmaster)as it was every time a local trawler was lost at sea.
Fond memories of "The Rath" swimming pool where a guy (called Gus Betty I think) used to lauch his considerable weight off the top diving board in a dive bomb!
Also used to collect discarded fish boxes from the docks, chop up into kindling for the then coal fires & sell for 6d a bundle.
Cockle picking, washing & cleaning, then filling empty jam jars with them and selling those for 6d a time. Happy memories.

I lived in Milford from 1973-1978 then moved out to Canada with my family at the age of 8. I attended the Mout Infant school and then North Road School before moving to Canada. We used to come back alot in the early years and I enjoyed going back to the old hangouts for a trip down memory lane. Does anyone remeber "The Dome"? I learned to ride a bike at that park. Great town, great memories. Looking forward to coming back next year.

Although I don't live there now, I love thinking back to my years growing up in Milford. A safe, clean environment to be a kid - not much in the way of drugs or violence or crime generally. It really is a place that you can go back to and feel like you never left - I spent six and half years living and going to school there, from age 12 to 19, but it felt like a lifetime. I love Milf!

I really appreciated having a quiet swimming pool there. Really clean, and Harford pool is not a jot on it.
Best nights out were in Milford - Evolution at the Kings. Only time I went out three nights in a row - and I was deafened for about a week afterwards. Great to look back on it. Yearn to go again.

Everyone tries to leave but we all end up back in Milford for the holidays. I now like the fact that there is only one high school, that everyone knows everyone, that the choice of night-life is limited. But when all your best friends are from there , your family are there and you have so many good memories of growing up there then Milford is like a utopia!

Martin Rimmer from MH in Orlando
Don't know what it is about MH... After living in Europe, the Mid East, California, Atlanta and now Orlando there is always a desire to return back to my family roots. MH might be cut off from the rest of the world (maybe that is the appeal) and suffer some economic problems but the area is rich in beauty and untapped potential. I look forward to returning home soon and giving up the unglam life of flying around the world and the high tech lifestyle to return to a more fundamental way of life with my family there. Out of all the places I have been to, only my home Milford Haven seems to offer this tranquil way of life.

I used to come to Milford Haven every year with my mum and dad and stayed in a cottage at the end of the quay. It was fabulous, I also stayed with a family called the Wonacotts who ran a chip shop. Does anyone know them? It was a fantastic childhood and I loved it.
My husband has booked a holiday in Little Haven in July so I can bring my daughter who will be 7 months and show her the sights. I cannot wait.

It's a great place to grow up, because it's safe and close-knit, but as an adult you come to long for anonimity and the opportunity to experience more than this little town can offer.

Alex Rowley living in Brum
After living in Brum for about 10 years, I am now desperate to return home to Milford! I guess it's when you have kids of your own you suddenly realise how lucky you were, growing up in such a beautiful place! I use to be irritated by living where everyone knew what you were doing before you actually did it, but now I see that as a bonus! I love Milford.

What can I say about Milford Haven? I have been there several times now. I like to come to the port and look at the big oil tankers, as they supply our great country with the vital resources we need to keep our immense economy running. I greatly admire these strong and noble seamen, without them this country would go to ruins. With their help, I believe we can once more become the colonial superpower that we once were. A great deal of importance is on the emphasis of Milford Haven as the country's main oil and petrol port, if we are to achieve these noteworthy objectives.

I grew-up in Cheshire, but visited Pembs when I was thirteen. I knew that this was where I would live, and by the time I was eighteen, I did. Twenty-five years on and I still love it!

Julie Turner - Business Studies Teacher
I was fortunate enough to gain my first teacing post as a teacher of Business Studies and ICT at Milford Haven Comprehensive School. What a fantastic school ! So many teachers that gave me inspiration and pupils that were an ideal to teach. So many names spring to mind - too many for me to name and shame. Most of you now will have completed your degrees and are embarking, I hope on successful careers. Milford Haven is a truly refreshing memory, those winds, that rainfall, but most memorable - the hugely friendly nature of it's inhabitants. I miss you all and hope to be back there soon. A family is now attached.

After living in the City of Wolverhampton for the past 2 and a bit years I now understand why everyone loves Milford so much. As children we thought it was boring living there - always moaning there was nothing to do and longing to escape. Now I realise how wrong we all were. Leaving Milford was one of the best things I have ever done to gain life experience and independance, Wolves is where I now live but Milford will always be my true home.

I live in Milford Haven and go to the local comprehensive and I think that there is no better place to grow up. I used to live in a big town in England but it was too dangerous for a teenager to grow up in. This place is safe and fun. Milfords the best!

The thing we love about Milford Haven is it is where we met at the Masonic Hall Dance over 50 years ago, our courting days were spent there and my husband attended the Milford Grammer School as a young man and lived in Hakin. Thank you for your interesting web site on my husbands birth place...

Grazia Tommasi, Venice, Italy
I am an Italian girl, I stayed in Milford Haven in the summer 2004, the months of June and July, for a stage in the L. Nelson Hotel.
I still remember this beautiful town and all the people I met there, I hope that them (Peter Frank, Stacy, Carrie, Dave, Dan, Jamie, James, Rob,...) still remember me and Josephine.
I'd like to come back in Milford but now I can't...sooner or later I really hope...
I want to see again the sea, the streets, the shops...they are not like here in Italy! I miss everything...
I think Milford has the power to be unforgettable...
P.S. Sorry for my orrible English...
love, Grazia

It's only when you actually leave Milford that you truely realise what a great place it is to be. For years I thought to myself that I couldnt wait to move from a small town to the city (I now study dance in Cardiff)and explore all the opportunities that were waiting for me. Now however I find myself missing simple things like bumping into fammiliar faces and not having the noise and smell of a main, busy road in the city outside your bedroom. I can't wait to come home for summer!

What a great site, I have been living away now for 19 years and always think of my younger days at Gelliswick and walking the beautiful coastal footpath with my dog. Bristol is such a bustling place, and I miss the quietness of Milford and the people that always seem to welcome you. Most of my family are from Milford so luckily I get to go home about 2-3 times a year. I certainly feel quite fortunate especially with some of the preceeding stories that I have read. What a place!

Marvin Thomas From Milford Haven!
I have lived in Milford all my life, and I'm sure there is no better place in the world to be brought up in. The friendly atmosphere and great night life makes it a perfect place to enjoy yourself. I enjoy taking my two pet pigs (Jasper & Wilson)for walks along the water front and swimming down the 'Mackies'in the summer time. I have recently finished my education at Milford Comprehensive school, and plan to start a carrier in the area. If your ever considering a destination for a holiday which involves water sports and great night life, then look no further, Milf's the place to be!!

I was born in Milford but moved away from there to the USA for 6 years and returned for the quiet atmosphere. From the ages of 7 to 12 I went to Milford Haven Junior School in which I have my best memories and I miss all my great friends. Unfortunatly, I moved from Milford to Braintree in Essex when I was 12 and am 14 years of age now. How I wish to go back!

I have recently moved from Milford to Cardiff with a few friends to start a career in the high flying world of Banking. I never thought that i would miss Milford as much as i do, especially the night life. Even though it's a small place the night life is so much better than here in Cardiff, with a much more friendly atmosphere in which to enjoy a pint. I really miss Martha's. I can't wait for my holiday's to come as i know where i'll be heading - Due West down the M4 and back to Bunker's!!

I moved away from Hakin in 1987. I have fond memories as a teenager of going to Charles St on Saturday afternoon with my mates. Favourite haunt was outside Woolies. Parade around for a bit then down to Rabs for a coffee. Great times. Miss it dearly. We visit as often as we can and have had many happy holidays in the area.

I miss the smell of the sea, sailing on the Haven, fresh fish, I worked on the Fish Market in the 70's. I really miss "the Craic". I have been living in New Zealand for the past 14 years, but Milford will always be in my heart.

It was once said by a famous geezer that "distance makes the heart grow fonder"!! How true it is!! As a student of The University College Chester studying Medicine & Law (minor) I long for the end of each semester when I am able to return back to the place where the hills meet the water!!

I have also recently gone to university in Chester and have actually realised what a place Milford Haven is. I now live in a very busy area and miss the peace and quiet that Milford provides. I love going to Gellyswick in my skoda taking into account the waterway. It is a pleasure to live in Milford Haven. I miss it everyday!

Since leaving Milford Haven to go to university in Aberystwyth I always look forward to coming home as it is such a beautiful place to live. I enjoy taking my dogs (Moll and Murph the Smurph) along the rath whilst featuring my eyes across the sparkling blue sea and taking into account the tankers coming in and out of the Haven. It is a pleasure to live in Milford Haven!

After coming here from Bridgend it makes a nice change to be in a peaceful caring community. Pembrokeshire is a beautiful part of wales so much to do. Milford Haven docks are worth seeing but I have to go to Haverfordwest to shop as the town needs some serious retail outlets.

I was born in Milford Haven some 50 plus years ago and still keep coming back, though my grandparents Sarah and Albert Collarbone have long since gone. I still have a few relatives living in or near Milford, and remember it from the time I spent at school there. Sadly North Road school, and so many of the little shops (like the Misses Swainson) are no longer there, or The Chapel which used to sell fruit and veg etc. So much has changed. I do hope that Milford continues to thrive and you keep it bright and cheerful.

I have been living in Connecticut USA for nearly 14 years with my 3 children and my husband and I am still terribly homesick for Milford Haven and Pembrokeshire.. Although I loved Milford when I lived there and never thought I would ever leave, I really didn't appricate it as much as I do now until I left.. I think you tend to take the beauty around you for granted when you live there .. This is a wonderful site that I have shared with my friends here in the US. When ever I get a little homesick I come here for a visit I then look forward to the next time I can take a run down the rath and look over at what looks like thousands of tiny diamonds sparkling beneath the surface of the water.. hmmmm roll on summer!! Keep up the good work guys...

I was born and raised in Milford Haven, went to the Milford Central school in the 1960's/1970's. I am now living just outside Victoria on Vancouver Island, Canada, which is a fantastic place, but it was great to find this website and look at all the photos from Milford Haven, Haverfordwest, Swansea and Tenby.
I went back to live in Haverfordwest with my three children for almost three years, the place hadn't changed much in the 17 years that I was in Canada! It was lovely to see all the old buildings and 11th century Churches in Pembrokeshire, here in Canada every building is so new!
Great website, it's great to catch up on all the news of Pembrokeshire - keep up the good work!

I am currently working in Kabul Afghanistan, it was nice to find my home town on the web. I take great delight in showing my work colleagues our town, they are mostly from Taiwan so it was nice for them to see the place I am from. Thank you for making my day, sadly I will not see Milford until the end of this year, but I can now always spend a few minutes on your web page when I feel that I want to be home.
