Anthony Davies of Mandurah, Western Australia

Just a quick comment from my memory of the heavy snow we had in Llanelli and of course South Wales.

We lived in Dafen just outside Llanelli, across the road from our house was a general store type shop run by the Hallet family, from my front door to the shop would have been about 70 yards, the snow was so deep at one time that all the fathers were able to dig tunnels through the snow to the shop...

Llanelli: A town boxed in by industrial Swansea, rural Carmarthen, a noisy M4 and geographic Gower. It basks in spectacular sunsets and is bathed in a melodic dialect. Famous exports include Huw Edwards, Scarlets and Gareth Rhys Owen. Llanelli is a wonderful town that lacks confidence.

Liz, I noticed that you find it hard to make friends. May I make a sugestion to visit Mytrle House. They are very friendly and have many activities such as mums and tods, cafe etc.

Sorry all - got to disagree. Llanelli is now a very very dirty, rundown, shabby town with no heart. Nazi slogans drawn on the buildings, drug addicts and drunks have taken over the old town centre. Most of the shops are empty. even the coastal path is starting to look neglected in parts. I live and work in the centre of the town and it seems to get worse everyday. Oh for the good old days.

It's a good town but the best thing is the SCARLETS and RIP to Ray Gravell.

I'm an exile from the North of England and have lived in a good few places around the UK but Llanelli has been my home for the past 25 years. The people are so very friendly and you have the sea and the countryside on your doorstep. You're close to Swansea and the Gower, Cardiff, Carmarthen and all that Pembrokeshire has to offer. Add to that all the redevelopment that's going on and you have a great place in which to live and bring up a family. May Llanelli and its people go from strength to strength.

Visited recently..even though it was more the pubs I visited I saw enough to get an impression of a v friendly town. Nice coastal path...would have been even better if it weren't a day with driving rain and force 10 gales!

Still a Llanelli boy at heart. Childhood memories of fishing in pond twm with the old steam trains going back and fro - the hot water stream coming out from the old castle mill. Been away for 44 yrs now but have been back a few times and will be again this year about June.

Llanelli isn't the best of places but I would say it is a good attraction to many people. I would comply that it has many different artifacts such as the Millenium Coastal Park, town centre, and many many more..

Moved from wales 27 years ago - I'm coming home. Love wales. Never go abroad just been trekking round Wales. Love the indoor market in Llanelli, and the Welsh shop. The roast dinner in the cafe there is the best - don't get that sort of thing in London. The beauty of Wales cannot be beaten. Where else can you go cockle picking? Houses are also still cheap. Many opportunities also opening up for young 'uns which were not around before.

I love Llanelli because of the people and their continual optimism - however if they don't start to stand up and make a stand the town will die. They need to vote with their feet and wallets and support the town centre and not continually use Trostre. When the market closes because of loss of custom then the town will also close. So come on support your town!

I came across this website and have enjoyed reading the various comments. I was born in Pwll and have lived in the United States for over forty years. However I am fortunate to be able to return to Pwll every year and enjoy my time while at home. "There's no place like home (Llanelli)"

Just booked a ticket home, gotta come see my Mam see. Even though I live on the other side of the world, Llanelli still holds a (hideous) fascination for me. I swore when I was young and green, that one day I'd leave Llanelli never to return. Oh well, at least I managed to do the "leave" bit, still can't get the hang of not returning though. It's costing me a fortune too....See you in October Llanelli.

Llanelli, wonderful place, I love it its welsher than welsh the people are wonderful, and you know the story the beach is wonderful, lovely views everywhere, but God could'nt give us all that favouritism he decided to give us Carmarthen for neighbours to even it out a bit.Seriously though Llanelli is great...

CAROL (THOMAS) ALLEN
My dad is from Llanelli. I have had some wonderful holidays there. I remember the old Llanelli with fond memories. My Gran lived in Penry Place. I remember going to the old indoor market, wandering round the stalls and seeing the old ladies selling cockles, having an ice cream from Reg's, who had a place in Temple St, where you could get it in a bowl. The smell from the pickled onion factory and the smell that came from the brewery in the town, they bring back some lovely memoiries. I still have family living there and still visit. I have just come back from a week there and loved every moment of it - even if it did rain all week. I will be back as often as I can. I love Llanelli and always will.
Mon Jul 30 16:54:12 2007

Kev Jones- Pinged

I loved growing up in Pinged. Open countryside, work on the farms, exploring Pinged woods as a kid, and then the Sat match day visit to Llanelli. A walk round the shops with Mam, then on to The Stag (now The White Horse, Hi Stu and Michelle if you're still there) and then onto Stradey to watch such greats as Derick, Delme, Phil and John and also not forgetting the insurmountable Gravs, Andy Hill, Selwyn and all the the other greats who have worn the infamous Scarlett jersey.

And for all those who were fortunate to be there on that historical day when the Great Carwyn assisted by a a great friend of mine Mr Norman Rupert Gale in the defeat of the great All Blacks what a day, what a memory. The pubs ran dry grown men cried and the whole of Llanelli celebrated. Great memories, great town, people of renowned friendliness. It's great to be Welsh, it's even greater to be from Llanelli. Llanelli long may you grow and prosper you will always be in my heart.

Will be home in Llanelli for a holiday on the 18th August 2007. I have been away for forty years but whereever you live you will always be from Llanelli. The world has become very small and I still can support my beloved Scarlets by the medium of TV. Lokking foward to the visit and meeting old friends.A Double Dragon will go down well.

I am a North east England Exile who moved for love to Llanelli a year ago. I've never been happier than living so close to the coast and reveling in the beautiful welsh countryside. I'll be married in Castell Coch next year and look forward to rasing a family in this beautiful place.

Am going to be in Llwynhendy, Llanelli in a couple of weeks. First time since my family emigrated to Canada in 1954! Is St. Michael's School, Bryn still alive, and are the beaches at Pembtey still so wonderful? After 53 years I'm going home ( for a visit!)

As a North East England exile forced to live `down south` in Yorkshire, I visited Llanelli and was struck by the similarities with the N.E. Beautiful coastline, nice countryside and friendly people. Even to the English.Oh,and lots of pollution from Port Talbot steelworks on the way up. The new coastal walk is very striking, the Scarlets ground a mecca and the Stradey Arms a welcoming pub. Even to the English.Lovely place, hope to go back at some point for various reasons.
Mon Mar 26 09:03:43 2007

Sonia of Swiss Valley

There are a lot worse places to live! Nice and quiet, affordable housing, close to the hots spots of Cardiff and Swansea.

Felinfoel having a bit of a face lift, Harry Watkins being extended and the Friendly Rivals (no-one ever really called it Tafarn y Felin!) being totally done-up! And nothing beats the Reservoir and cycletrack!

Can't wait for midsummer to walk from Swiss Valley up to the Waun Wyllt, have some dinner and wine, then toddle off home down the track again, being scared by the cows and leaping masochistic frogs!

Llanelli is now home to Polish nationals. They will really bring diversity to the town. If you want to see the future, take a trip to Hammersmith in London and see what these wonderful people can do against all the odds. I am from Bryn originally. Travelled the globe and now settled in Carmarthen.

Born & bred in Llanelli. Went to Canada over 20 years ago. My family & friends still live in Llanelli & I visit twice a year. There is something special about the welsh countryside & I will always be proud to be welsh. The town has changed so much since I moved away, they have done a great job with the new golf links & the beach area. Also like the pyramid in the town centre. Plus we have the best rugby team there is! - Go Scarlets.

Llanelli what a place left in 1956 moved at the age of 6 years old to London. All my education in London then moved to Joeburg RSA. After 8 years moved on to Sydney Australia. Have lived her for 23 years and love it. I miss the rugby, of all the Scarlets. The way they play is a credit to there great spirit to the town of Llanelli and its wonderful people. Long live the town its people and the tradition of the Scarlets and welsh rugby.

Llanelli is a great place to live, if it wasn't they wouldn't be pouring money into it, like "sandy water park" or "the new golf course" or even "the new parking etc down at our stunning beach.

Well come take a look at Llanelli, "HOME OF THE SCARLETS" and breeders of the best WELSH rugby players!!!!!

Jason Davies, formerly Swiss Valley, now Denmead,
Moved away from Llanelli in 1986, a sad time for the town, Wales and industry in general, the town was quite depressed and in recession with high unemployment, but a recent visit was indeed a breath of fresh air, the new Millenium Park (used to be the shut down Duport Steel when I left) is simply stunning, Cefn Sidan still one of the best beaches in the world (yes!) Sad to see my original St John Lloyd School has been replaced by a modern building, understand the old one burnt down. Its bizarre that when one leaves an area, then come back after twenty years you expect things to be unchanged. Well done Llanelli, keep up the good work and improvements, I am beginning to regret moving away in the first place. "Ta-ra!"
Fri Mar 10 14:23:33 2006

I love Llanelli because it's where I grew up, the green valleys, small towns of Carmathenshire county and my relatives; although the Llanelli council should have left Coleshill Secondary School building standing, now it's a old folks home parking lot, darn.

John Griffiths Crawley Sussex
Born in Llanelli 1951. Moved to Cardiff 1955. I remember the huge goldfish in pond twym. The yellow banks of the river Lliedi near old castle works. Carrie the sand dredger at its berth near the mouth of the Lliedi. Ships tied up in the North Dock waiting to be broken up after the 2nd World War. Boys diving into the dock from the wooden staging. Crossing the delapidated railway bridge at the dock lock gates, and wondering if it would collapse. Running up and down the ballast at new dock. Day and evening bus trips from the side of the town hall, and the sing song on the return journey. Hearing the town hall clock chime from my grandparents house in Pembrey Rd. Watching bowls matches in Park Howard followed by an ice cream in the conservatory. Getting off the train at the station, crossing the footbridge to see the magnificent castle class steam engine that had hauled us from Cardiff. Seeing a row of South Wales Transport buses outside the station. The noise from the stamping in Bryn Rd where we lived a few doors away from my grandparents. So many happy memories.

Just a quick word to the people of Llanelli- Thank You SO much for the hospitality and kindness during my last visit down there! As a 'Gog', I've been visiting many parts of S.Wales and I've had a fantastic time wherever I've been. I must admit, I was a bit nervous (to say the least!) before I come to each town down there, but I'm always made to feel very welcome and have such a good laugh in the pubs, some really hilariously funny and warm-hearted people to be found. Everyone thought I was a liverpudlian at first, until in one pub (I think it was The Celtic Arms!), I stood up and sang 'Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau' which ended in everyone's spontaneous applause! Cymru Am Byth!!

I love Llanelli because it's so quiet and peaceful, and no one minds just popping over whenever, cause no-one leaves cause there's nowhere better to go in the world!

Cochyn Y Cwm - Goetre Wen
If you have'nt tracked Felinfoel beer from the brewery to its source up the valley, past the baptising pools and under the waterfalls and through the woods, then walked back down the Mynydd Mawr through the fantastic overgrown gorge - you haven't lived. The Lliedi from the brewery upstream should be a heritage site.

Carl from Llanelli
I was just blessed by my visit to Llanelli, after living in the U.S.A. for the last 16 yrs it was great to go home and see the old town. I to have fond memories of playing in Stradey Woods, going down to the beach, watching the Scarlets play. I still have many family members who still work and live in the area. The pints in the Barbican, and then onto Raffels, and then to round the night of with a curry. Many many good memories. Llanelli u maybe out of my sight but your never away from my heart. Comon the Scarlets...

Rich and Daz Llanelli
Me and Daz have lived in this town all our lives, it's a pretty good place for fishing and we appreciate what the local council have done to improve the area over the past few years and what is still being done today. This September I am leaving Llanelli to go to Aberystwyth Uni for 4 years, this will be the first time I've lived outside of this town and to be quit honest I'm really gonna miss the place. Hope to come back one day, but not too soon!

Tony Hopkins - Australia
My parents left Llanelli in 1966 and we arrived in Melbourne in December of that year after travelling through the Panama Canal. When we arrived the temp. was over 100 degrees. Lived in Melbourne all these years and I am now 43, after arriving in Melbourne when I was 5. Would love to get back there one day because I love the Welsh language and the people...

Pete - Worcester
I have been away from Llanelli now for 8 years or so, but the place is still in my heart and soul. I will return one day soon to show my new family the place where I grew up, an ideal place to live back then. It was safe, there was plenty of work, and we always had lots to do, besides the usual adolescent mischief. I would be interested to hear from anyone who grew up in and around Cefn Caeua in the 70s and 80s who went to Stebonheath School. What's happened to it is it still standing?

Dan from Llanelli now in Taunton
I love going home to Llanelli it still has all the charisma as when I left. Still make a point of going out on Saturday night, it's three times the size of Carmarthen, so it has more of a variety of pubs and clubs and of course has one of most famous rugby teams ever.
Sat Apr 2 12:15:21 2005

Row Llanelli - ish
Well Llanell is ok. Nights out are so so. I suppose llanelli isn't all that bad. I think the worst part of Llanelli is the North Dock what a waste of money the cafe should have been a seafood restaurant or something better than a cafe that is only open in the day and doesn't take into account the views at night. But besides that Llanelli is going up in the world.

S. Philips - Bermuda
I am fortunate enough to have married a Welshman, a son of Llanelli, who came to Bermuda 23 years ago and never left. He has taken the time to introduce me to his wonderful village and much of Wales over the past 20 years and I truly understand his love and sense of place. We eagerly anticipate our forthcoming visit this summer ...

The town is brilliant if you have short hair and like dance music, but to me and my friends, the town is predjudice against Rockers who happen to be the most decent residents of the town!

Minty from Poole
I left Llanelli about 1977 but often return as I still have good friends and some relatives there. Even though the town has run down over the years the thing I miss most is Llanelli people's sense of humour and the way they make outsiders feel welcome. I may return at intervals of a year or more and when I do it's as if I've only just been up the road. People make a place after all and Llanelli has quality people in abundance.

Rob from London
I moved from Llanelli only a year ago but I'm glad. As much as I love the town it saddens me to see it's steady decline. However much money is being put into making the town look nicer it isn't changing the nature of the town.

I can walk around the streets of central London at any any hour of the day and feel safer that I do in Llanelli. Don't get me wrong, I still love the town, all of my family are there and my friends and it is one of the most beautiful towns in the country but when I see gangs of kids roaming the town centre at all hours of the night and the lack of respect they have for anyone else I feel sick to my stomach. There hasn't been anything for kids in Llanelli to do for a long time and instead of tarting up shopping centres, build youth clubs or drop in centres where kids can go instead of terrorising people outside Theatre Elli.

Karl from Saffron Walden
I was born & bred in Sospan (Glasfryn Hospital) hundreds of years ago and educated at Bigyn Hill then finally onto Stebonheath Secondary Modern. Some excellent/interesting pubs around in those days - York Hotel, Ty Melyn, The Stripmill, to name but three. Also had some great nights at the Glen Ballroom, and who could forget the jewel in Llanelli's crown - the 'Cabaret Candlelight'! I remember on one occasion seeing Dorothy Squires and Acker Bilk there! Yes, Llanelli has changed a lot but I still get a thrill every time I visit!

I have only visited Llanelli once when I was younger and hardly remember much of Llanelli, and I forgot all about Llanelli until I met someone from there on holiday a few weeks ago. I never before believed in love at first sight but I believe that from the short time we spent together, Nick (from Llanelli) you and I are a perfect match. But the sad thing is that I cannot contact him or find him because I forgot his surname, and I only know a few little details about him :(

I love Llanelli because I was born there. I also remember Stradey Woods climbing over the rocks on Beach Road over the railway line and sitting for hours on the rocks watching the waves break onto the rocks. I left Llanelli 35 years ago but I still love to go back it will always hold a special place in my heart.

Arwel Morgan - Five Roads (Now in RSA)
I was born in Sylen Bungalow in Five Roads. I have been living in S.Africa for the past 32 years, but my heart is and always wiill be in Wales. Llanelli I remember for the good old days, the Glen, the drives to the Gower, the people themselves. Yes the old town has changed, and a lot of people have moved on, but it's still worth coming "home" and reminisce with old friends and family over a "pint"

In the words of D:Ream "Things Can Only Get Better". Llanelli's old town centre is to receive a £6mil. face lift. Excellent news, but what makes me call this place home is the people. Ymlaen Llanelli!

Steve from Mid Glamorgan
I would like to thank the way the staff helped me when I had a epiletic seizure in the Asda store Murray street branch. The first-aider Yvonne was very helpful indeed and stayed with me on the shop floor with John until I came out of it and was alright to come home. Thanks again it was very nice to have helpful staff like that. Yvonne was marvellous and kept talking to me and got me something to drink when I was fully awake and getting my energy back. It was a pleasure shopping in that store and will go there again next time I am in the area. Thanks to the management team as well.

A Visitor from Warton, Lancashire
I regularly visit South Wales and enjoy seeing the changes for the better that have taken place since I left the region. Last Wednesday (7th April) my friend Steve and I went to Dan-yr-Ogof Caves for the first time in over twenty years. After this we proceeded to Llanelli, took a look around and decided to do some shopping in Asda before heading back to Bridgend.

Unfortunately, Steve who has epilepsy, had a seizure in the store and knowing what to do I reassured the staff and customers of what should be done and not to panic. We were the centres of attention for almost an hour for passing customers due to Steve resting after the seizure, with some being rather curious offering some help and suggested calling an ambulance during the seizure. They were getting a bit worried and it was nothing out of the ordinary so at this moment it wasn’t anything to worry about and should an ambulance be needed I am sure my instincts will make me ask for one. However, the first aid assistant Yvonne was calm, confident, very helpful and talkative filling me in on what has changed over the years while we were waiting for Steve to get back to normal and I told her how I was connected with the area. We both had a good talk and it was more enjoyable than just waiting around doing nothing else.

It was certainly a day to remember but passed by peacefully and if people remain calm like most of them did in situations like this it would be better for everyone around as well as the patient. On behalf of both of us, I would like to thank Yvonne and the other staff at Asda who helped us out and coped very well.

Jac from Pwll
I love Llanelli because I now live in Glasgow! Lovely things - Stradey Woods, Parc Howard, the view across to the Gower from my house in Pwll. Not so lovely things - the sunken (drunken) gardens, the bus terminus, The Glen.

Steve from Saffron Walden
Llanelli - a lovely, ugly place! Unfortunately, whenever I return to Llanelli these days it always saddens me to see how run down the town centre looks. However, memories are better things! Stradey Park on a Saturday afternoon to see the all-conquering Scarlets; the view across to the Gower from the Bigyn; walks round Swiss Valley; the beach at Cefn Sidan - all pleasant memories of some happy years in Sospan!
Wed Mar 24 07:57:13 2004

Sharon King (Howells) from Croydon
I love Llanelli because I was born there. I love the memories of my childhood, walking through Stradey Woods from Pwll, eating ice cream in the conservatory in Parc Howard, going down to the beach from Sandy Rd, salty Carmarthen Maid butter from wooden tubs in the indoor market, peering over the bridge next to Woolworth at the Lliedi. I even remember the trolley buses. It's much changed now but I still feel I'm home when I visit.
