Hi Julian Simpson and Jane Field,Great to hear from you both, We went back to Harford in April and had a great time with Paul Richards, Sandy Lawrence and their families. Went back to the old Secondary Modern (not so modern as I recall), Julian, remember you and Mac Dougall driving your 50cc motor bikes around school in the last week? Did you get suspended for those last days? We had great times then and also when we went back in April, Swan, Bristol Trader, Castle (you can upgrade the pubs but the locals stay the same) and then until 2am at the Friars without getting into a scrap, we must be too old to bother with these days! Let us know what you are both up to. What happened to MacDougal? Shiela from Portsmouth, do you have a brother? We had a Quigley in school with us, Nigel I think, he would be 45ish now.

I went to school at the secondary modern in the early 'seventies. Lived in the city road area, have some really happy memories, here are some of my school mates names, Spider, Lynn Parr, Carol Quigley, Gilly Perkins, June Tamplin. I wish I could meet up with them all again, I would love to return and live back in Harford. I will always call it home.

Meriel, I think that the boutique was called 'Bakers' and was run by a family of the same name...[there] were two shops, one for men, and one for girls - I used to buy lots of my clothes there too.

Born in Harford 1943. Left 1961. Visit every year since.Great town then but very drab now. Needs a facelift.High Street is full of empty shops and those that remain are mostly worn and tired in appearance.

Happiest days of my life have been in and around Harford.I first visited famiy(Penhales)from early 70's in Rosemarket(anyone remember those long hot summers of '76/'77?) and later on Hill Lane in town. Fond memories of the Friars, Trader and the Swan at Little Haven. Still down at least once a year to Broad Haven area even though 'rellies' long since emigrated. Its my spiritual home, and I dream of moving back permanently in the next few years.

PLease can anyone remember the name of that gorgeous little boutique that opened near the top of High street. on the left-hand side, in the 1960s. Spent all my teenage years in Haverfordwest and was very fortunate to do so.

I lived in H'West on two occasions in the 70's and 80's and have never found another place on earth more like home. I also knew Clay Ghrist and his wife (at the time)Liz. I have tried to locate them to tell them of the death of my oldest son that was raised in H'West. He too considered it to be his "home." I will always love Wales.

Rich Winney-I remember you like yesterday.I also remember all those guys you reunited with. We all went to the Playboy club for Mike Escorcios B Day...I'm still wondering how Mike Williams could hit a softball 400 yards! I used to go across the street to get ready but he hit it so high I could not see it. So I ducked. That is something else you all got together. Steve Bundy was a great guy that used more hair gel under his cover than anyone. That was so funny when he took off his hat. I remember Chief Pope and the Power building well. It's great to know you are all well. I keep in touch with Albert Meiser from Pittsburgh. We have been good friends for many years. Hey Rich - tell me what it was like when you went back?

I had to add this comment. I remember that one time at the Naafi, I asked this RAF dude if he liked Americans. He replied "You blokes are okay, but there is three things wrong, you are oversexed, overpaid, and over HERE." I still laugh at that comment it was funny as hell and clever for that guy to come up with that. Then right after he said that all heck broke loose. Anyone know the wherabouts of Bill Doran or Garry Edwards?

Just wanted to reply to Islwyn now living in Ireland. Are you the same Islwyn who had very curly hair in Prendergast Junior School. When I saw your comment just now, you came to mind, may not be you of course, with short trousers. Anyway I was there between 1961-1967.

Hi all who know me, we didn't get home to Harford for NYE, you probably noticed, the Aussie dollar took a tumble against the Quid. Things are a bit better now so planning to visit at Easter, the weather should be a lot better then and the days longer, planning to get to the beaches and pubs especially Little Haven, Nolton, Solva and spend an evening or two at the Druidstone Hotel and the Trader in Harford.

I never got to Brawdy but nonetheless was an aquaintance of Liz And Clay Ghrist while in Eleuthera, Bahamas. I remember them speaking highly of Brawdy and surrounding area. Looking back, I wish I would've got to known them better. I think it's very nice Liz has got to go home on occasion. Liz, if you're reading this I was a young Seabee...After Eleuthera I moved on to NavFac Keflavik. As a Seabee I would've been quite content to stay in the NavFac system but after Keflavik I located to Diego Garcia with Nmcb 74 out of Gulfport, Ms. Anyway, all the best to you guys.

I was stationed at NAVFAC Brawdy from 1989-1992. I loved the history, the long summer days, the quiet pace of life, the markets, oh, just about everything. I met my husband of 18 years at Brawdy, we got married in Haverfordwest (our marriage certificate describes us as “bachelor” and “spinster”).
We bought our rings at the jewellers across from Woolworths at the bottom of High Street. My first two children were born at Withybush Hospital (where the care was quite amazing).
Some of my fondest reminiscences include exploring Haverforwest Castle, the Coastal Path, Havefordwest market and High street, Milford Haven, Carew Castle and market, St. David’s, Fishguard, Pembroke Castle; the bright yellow mustard field across the street from Brawdy’s front gate; the time a queen bee touched our house in Milford Haven and the walls buzzed; the silent “cricket-less” evenings outside screenless windows; etc.
My memories of the time I spent in Haverfordwest and the surrounding area truly hold a special place in my heart.

Born in Harford in 1964. Left in 1987 to join the RAF and now in the Police. Retire in 12 years and God willing, will come back to see the rest of my days out at my spiritual home! Anyone remember me from Haylett Grange?
Great times at school there! Still have all my family in the area and visit three or four times a year. My kids love the beaches, especially my favourite, Broad Haven. Love seeing their faces when we chase our Jack Russell around the bay to Little Haven! I'm getting too old to be running along that beach these days!! Hi to all that remember me!!

The pasty shops, the fish and chips, the Snowdrop bakery, Woolworths and so many other quaint places of interest. The Masonic Hall is where my wife Chris and I had our 1st dance together. Precious!St. Mark's School, the small churches, scenic ruins and trains with so much character.Br! idge Street, the bakeries and the flood. The Special Olympics, the parades and special celebrations (Guy Falk, Boxing Day, Rememerance Day, St.David's Day, etc.).Fond memories of them all. I was born and raised in Wolfscastle but went to school in Prendergast Juniors and then H West Boys Grammar. Left in '90 and still visit sometimes, mostly just passing through. It's a shame the town looks so sad and cheap these days. Living in Ireland now and it reminds me so much of H West in the 70's - real shops, real people, blah, blah, blah. Ahh fond memories...

I visited Haverfordwest last year August 07, it was surreal, I hadn't visited in 12 years lots of things have changed. I stayed with a childhood friend and also family. Visited NAVFAC Brawdy, the TE building looked the same however, the place was all offices. I reflected quite a bit. I saw many names that I remember in Clay's and my tours reading through the Haverfordwest blog, I have such fond memories but memories they are. I too remember the van that used to bring fish and chips to the NAVFAC, what I would do for some. I remember the functions that we had in Brawdy what fun.

Harford born and bred up the Haven Road, Cuckoo lane boarding kennels, closed down after dad passed on in 1980. Best places - Swan, Little Haven (closed down), The Carmarthen Arms (last time we were home, 3 years ago it was a dump), Market Hall parties (now a housing estate), Roch Gate discoes (long ago ceased)and trying to hitch back to Harford, many times walked all the way home via the back roads to the Haven Road, The Mariners at Nolton Haven and the Druidstone Hotel and beach. Happy times, will be back for NYE this year.

I'm a Bridge boy, always will and always be. Went to sec mod and left in 74. I found work away from Harford eventually settled in the North East. My wife Suze could not believe the beauty of the countryside and coastline that I had left behind. We still visit my family but not as often as we would like and even our grown up kids still talk of our holidays at Broad Haven, Newgale and Little Haven. Still the Carmarthen Arms, The Friars, The Glen and the discos at Roach Gate seem like only yesterday. I used to think the grass was greener in my youth but now I would love to move back to Harford!

I grew up in Harvord. I'm a Longneck and proud of it. I moved for work but would be back in a shot. As for town centre on weekend it's been that way for as long as I can remember we always were in town centre a lot of the time. We were the idiots everyone goes on about. If there was more to do for the youngsters they would do that it's about time the council stopped...people moving in and buying up the houses, so that the locals can get a foot on the property ladder and also did something for future voters ie the young longnecks.

As a child I lived in Pembs, but then moved away only to return in 1968 (and now I'm living in Ceredigion). I used to go to the Market Hall on Saturday nights and then catch the bus back to Neyland. I remember seeing "Yes" and "The Geno Washington Ram Jam Band"; but there must have been a few others. Can anyone remind me who played at the Hall in the Summer of '68?
I loved my time in West Wales and would have moved back earlier if I could have found a job here. As it is, I think myself fortunate to be back now.

I was an electronics technician st NAVFAC Brawdy from July of 1984 thru December of 1986. I lived in Roch, Solva, and The Rhos (Lower Lodge, Slebech). Although having lived there for a brief period and not having the pleasure of returning since, I can honestly say that I still consider Pembrokeshire in general and Haverfordwest, in particular, as my second home and become very nostalgic when speaking of my time there. It was indeed magical. The people were warm and friendly and welcomed into their homes. I look forward to returning one day.

I did 3 tours at NAVFAC Brawdy....80-81, 82-84, and 90-94....The best times of my life....I married my wife of 23 years during my second tour....I'll admit it, I'm one of the Yanks who came over and stole a local girl....I practically lived in the old Friars, back when the outside loo was where the back bar is now...And the old Castle Hotel (prior to the salmon coloured paint)...Seen a lot of familiar names and wish we were still there..

Sue - Haverfordwest
Being an oldie (59) oh dear, I can remember the dances down Brawdy on a Sunday night in the '60's.. They were fun! Met some really fantastic people and made a few friends. Of course, my mother worried that I would be out 'all night' because she thought the bus from Haverfordwest got back too late and I had college the next day (Neyland Tec). We compromised, I drove and got home at a sensible time - 10.30 p.m.! Heaven forbid if I was late - grounded for a month! Brilliant times and lots of memories. The Bristol Trader was always our meeting place and its amazing how long you could make a half of cider last - being skint!

Spent two tours stationed at NAVFAC Brawdy. My wife was an OTA and I worked for MWR as the sports guy. The first tour was in the late 80's second tour was when the base was closed. A sad day. My wife, Angela was the last person to stand duty at Brawdy. She locked the gate for the final time and gave the key to the RAF. Saw some familiar names. Hi Dan and Mary, Tony Wells, Al Farrar. We sure miss it too.

I still remember those days when me and my wife moved to Haverfordwest for my project assignment. It was bit hard in the beginning especially after moving from London where life is so busy however once we explored the beauty of this place, we didn’t feel like going back now. We spent some of our best time in this picturesque and nature filled environment. The abundance of sports grounds and facilities took me back to my university days with nightlife making it equally exciting. Initially I used to call this place “Pensioner’s Paradise” however now I’d say it’s a paradise for all.

I brought my wife back to Haverfordwest for the first time this past August to visit family and friends and it was great to be back. We got to see all the sights I remembered while growing up and had a few pints and a history lesson at the Milford Arms. My Nan and Grandad owned that pub back in the late fifties to late sixties. Sure looks different then the pictures my family has. Looking forward to coming back in 3 years to celebrate my 40th with all my family and friends. Maybe we will celebrate at the ARM's Keep an eye out in July on 2010.

Great place miss it loads - good to see the development going on there. House prices are extreme though considering the wages on offer - just hope the locals don't get priced out of market as it would be a shame if it became a town full of English (no offence if you're english).

...just like a second home. Lot of friends here, and spent...the most memorable time of my life...beautiful people and well developed town, and most beautiful girls and boys in the whole world. Almost four beautiful beaches are just next to it and...great...tourist attractions, especially, Tenby and Newgale. I love Haverfordwest and want to be here again.

What do I not love about Haverfordwest? I moved there when my dad was stationed at Brawdy (early 80s- SeaBee named Linus Miller). My sisters (Wendy and April) and I went to school at Mary Immaculate where my best friend was Suzanne O'Gorman. If anyone knows her please have her get in touch with me (Myspace.com/longhorn00). I remember a redheaded Kathleen (or was it Kathryn?) jamming my thumb in the bathroom door and my infant two teacher Jones. We lived on Winch Lane across from Allison and down a couple houses from a pastor/priest/monsignor? who smoked a pipe which I can still smell to this day. I remember getting my first cabbage patch doll at Tesco one christmas. I remember walking around the shops (there was a candy shop on the corner we went to and a Woolworths) and then the long trek back up the hill to get home. We picked raspberries that grew along the fence. We ice skated near the shore, we went for trips to Cardiff and Pembrokeshore and London. I remember Christinas bed and breakfast and canoeing along the river every sunday after church... It was my childhood and I will never forget it. Nowadays I meet so many disenchanted cynical people who grew up unhappy. They should have lived in Haverfordwest. I cherish my memories from there. I hope to go back someday but worry it won't be what I remember and that it will be ruined. If you knew me or my family and would like to get in touch, use the myspace link. The BBC is not responsible for the content of external websites

Finally me and the love of my life got married last December and here we are in Haverfordwest! It's been about 8 months now that I've come here and I must admit it's a beautiful place. I find myself growing fonder of it every day! The local people have been extremely warm and co-operative. Coming from India I have felt welcomed and embraced by everyone. I love the beautiful beaches, my fav is Barafundle and other places. It's truly a feeling of living in nature's lap!

Found this by surfing - brill! I'm a Harford longneck. Been in Bristol 1 year, yes I do miss H-west and Pembs, Gods own land. I was so thrilled to see so many people that I know, have been searching for, one my old friend and nursing colleague, Meryl Karr (Florida). We trained at the old County together. John Armound lived by me Baring Gould Way, Rhys Griffiths old family friends. Yes I remember Harries the chemist and all the others in Bridge St. I still visit often it will always be my home.

My family moved from Cardiff to Haverfordwest just before my 5th birthday. Me and my sisters went to Fenton Infants, Barn Street and Tasker Milward schools in the late 1970s and 1980s. I moved back here to Cardiff in 1997, but my mum still lives and works in Harfod. It's great to visit her down there because it's lovely place to escape to and get out of the big smoke once in a while!
Being as so many ex-RAF people seem to be here, one of my childhood memories is waving at RAF pilots as they flew over the town in their Sea King helicopters. We'd be so happy to see a little man waving back at us!

I am a born Long Neck (Harfat boy). I spent hours mooching around a once great town, Toms Sports, Sydney Heath, a good pet shop and other interesting places. Now we have a dishevelled High Street, building owners who do not care and a split town with a council that is impotent.Pity too. As soon as the market moved it all went down hill, alomost literally!

Keith, I remember you, Bonaroti and Luch! I was also stationed at NAVFAC Brawdy from 1974-1976 and loved the place. I had a Norton motorcycle and froze my butt off riding it over there in the cold rain! We loved the Duke, the Roche and The Friars pubs and I'd love to see the place again. I hope it hasn't changed too much over the years. I have only fond memories of South Wales (and one tattoo from Swansea!)

It's a lovely part of the world. Haverfordwest is only spoilt by the culture of binge drinking which engulfs the town in the nightime. Unlike our European neighbours, you wouldn't feel at ease at night walking through the town. That said, that is also the case for most British town these days.

Lived and worked in Haverfordwest, was a nurse in Withybush. Great memories of my schooldays and school friends. Spent three tours in Navfac Brawdy, we left in '75 and had two tours after that. Great times. I am going to vacation in Haverfordwest in August '07. It will bring back memories - it has been many years.

I agree Haverfordwest is a lovely place. I was stationed at RNAS Brawdy from 59/62. Two of my children were born in the old County Hospital, and we lived on Furzypark. The drive to Brawdy everyday was breathtaking especially Newgale beach. I have been back twice and there's been lots of changes. We used to go picking Pembrokshire new potatoes I never see any sign of them now, are they still grown?.

I am originally from Harfat, and grew up in the City Road area. I now live in Texas USA, I have a good friend whose thirst for history astonishes me, I thought what about the history of the place I love and grew up in and took for granted everyday. As I am putting together the last page of my scrapebook, my heart feels heavy I miss Haverfordwest so much, I still have family there and unfortunatly I haven't been able to get home for 8 years this scrapbook brought back a lot of wonderful memories. For me it is so true you dont miss it until you move

Vera Lowe née Gibbon’s contribution encouraged me to obtain her evocative book, "My Haverfordwest Childhood 1918-1939". I would recommend anyone interested in differing personal perspectives of the town in the first half of the 20th century to read Ms Lowe’s book, and two others also published by the Haverfordwest Civic Society: Robert Nisbet, "Under the Hills: A Memoir of Haverfordwest 1945-1962" and Baden Davies, "Born and Bred: Havefordwest as I Remember it from 1924-1995". They make fascinating reading.

I lived in Haverfordwest for near enough 20 years and loved it. Growing up there was second to none - I realise this now having three children of my own in a busy city.
I couldn't move back just yet though, too many things happening here to just get up and go. Hopefully I will return there to live in time. I still go back every now and then, but not as much as I would like to. P.S. Yes I know Boff, I gave him the name......

I was born in the Old County Hospital just b4 it was knocked down. I think it was situated nr St Thomas Green ( I really dont know why I think this). I have very fond memories of the town, and of my time in Upper Barn Street School and in Taskers.
I moved to Glebelands in Johnston when I was three, and then again to Hawthorne Rise before I was five - stayed there until I was 13. I have dreams of Haverfordwest and how things were. Very often I think I'm pining for the past, but on recent visits to the place and seeing how much it has changed it feels strange. I wouldnt mind moving back there, but I know things wont be as they were.

Grew up on the family farm in Freystrop. Dad had a chemist shop in Bridge Street. Went to the secondary modern and left in 1976. Returned in 1979 and left again in 1984.
Everyone knew each other in Bridge Street. Mel Car the barber, Donadini cafe, John Bull strores, Osbourne and Perkins, The Piccolo cafe. Rugby on Saturday mornings and again in the afternoons.
Met the girlfriend who worked in Woolies on a Saturday to go to the Palace Cinema, then to Phipps for chips and home on the last bus! Dream on. Visit fortnightly. Bath is nice, but not as good as Harfod !

I love Haverfordwest, my twin sister and I were born down the old Marsh Yard,in March 1938 famous as the old scrap yard run by my Dad the scrap metal king, Issac Arnold, a Dad to be proud of. What stories he could tell, an amazing man, married to a great lady, our mum, and parents to 10 children what a family. PCC buildings are now built on that land that holds many memories. Haverfordwest is great, wonderful for a holliday, surounded by beautiful country and coastlines, a place to retire too and with wonderfull people, who are the best. What more could you want!

I've just moved from Haverfordwest to Cardiff. I love Haverfordwest so much, all my mates live there and it is a beautiful place. The reason I moved away is there isn't much chance of a big career there, you are very limited, but other than that it is the place to be!

I have very fond memories of H-west. I lived there from 91-94 while my dad was at NAFVAC Brawdy. I actually found this page when an old friend from Tasker Milward randomly e-mailed me, which got me thinking about my time there. I tried a few searches on google and voila-- a whole page of H-west lovers!
By the way Bethan, you wouldn't be the same Bethan Roberts I sprayed hair gel all over in English class would you?

Born and brought up on a farm 12 miles from Haford, then moved to Crundale. Loved living there and brought up my two children who went to St Thomas Picton School.
I have gone through some of these messages and it's fab as I have come across two that I know Lee Squelch his mum was, and is still, a good friend hope she is well? Andrea Morgan she used to go to school with my daughter.
Having moved to Yorkshire over five years ago Pembrokeshire is a little haven of peace and tranquility from the day-to-day hussle and bussle of where we now live.
I do go home to pembrokeshire every year as all my family still live there and I love visiting my nieces and nephews to see how they have grown.
My best mates who I am still in contact with, and always will be, are Maz and Linda, who have been a tower of strength for me in the last ten years and I just wanted to let them know I would love to move back to Haford, maybe one day! I have one very special place there, Newgale Beach, it's a wonderful place to clear your head and so beautiful. Home. Please keep it like that.

I was stationed at Brawdy on TWU during the sunner of '91. The flying, the surfing, Minnies & RJs, the US burger place at the back of Brawdy camp and the mess parties - probably the most enjoyable time in my working life. I've been back so many times and its still as unspoilt as ever.

Clive Roberts - Sydney, Australia
I was born in Harford and lived at the top of City road opposite the cemetary, luckily we moved from there when I was 2 and took over the Boarding kennels down Cuckoo lane off the Haven road. I lived in Harford until I was 16 when I moved to Cheltenham and 7 years after that to Australia, that was 20 years ago now, how time flies. I still miss Harford heaps and we used to ride our bikes down to Broad Haven and sit on the grassy bank across from the amusement arcade (gone now) and watch the older boys play touch rugby.
I know 2 other boys from Harford now living in Sydney, Roderick Stephens from Haven road and John Ammond from Merlins Bridge, we catch up a fair bit and never get bored of talking about our great childhood in and around Pembrokeshire.
Cheers for now Harford and we'll meet again some sunny day!

Stationed at Nav Fac Brawdy in the early 'seventies when the base was created. The people and the town of Haverfordwest were awesome.
Rode with local biker club. Me mates were Mike, Benny, Benno. The pubs were a great place to enjoy a pint of lager and a game of darts.
The coast of Pembrokeshire and the towns thru out were a sight to behold. The town of Haverfordwest and its townfolk are family to be sure. They took me in as one of their own.

I Live in Prendergast, I know what they mean when they say theres no place like home. We have lovely coastlines and beaches, great surfing, good shopping. Everyone is very socialable and friendly, everyone knows each other. However on the downside if you want a good career, their are limited amount of options around here. Haverfordwest is the best place on earth and anyone who knows it, will probably agree that Newgale is still the best place to go when your in need of reminding that we really do live in the best county. Its just the best place to go if you ever need to clear your head. I wouldn't change where I live for the world. After living in Cardiff, and thinking that I would never leave Cardiff, ever, it was home that I returned to when things got tough. As the saying goes. " There's no place like home"

No....not a Swansea Jack, I'm a long neck born and bred. Spent most of my life there, the Grammar School, lived in The Gloster Arms in Mariner's Sq in the 60's, DJ-ing at RJ's in the 80's with Chris and Phil. Too many memories and as many regrets for leaving. It may not be the centre of the universe but it ain't far off. It's in God's County and that's good enough for me! I get back as often as I can...

I was stationed at NavFac Brawdy from 1979-1981 and just loved it! Hey Malcolm, I thought Newgale was the most incredible sight I'd ever seen, as well! If you were close friends with Martin Piddington then I knew you and have photos of you at the Naffee. I went by my first name Patti and my maiden name was Vorous. Anyway, I have many fond memories of the coastal path where I took pictures of sheep and sometimes encountered seabees having a party by the cliffs. Even though I met my husband at my subsequent tour of duty in Hawaii, my Navy experience was all downhill after my tour of duty in Wales!

Like many others I too spent some six years close to Harford. I was at Brawdy and spent all my time off in town. I have so many good friends in the area I couldnt possibly name them all. Years 1960 - 1966 are my most memorable times. I too remember the B/Trader (no more) and the queues at Phipps the chippie. I know enormous changes have taken place, just the same I will be back to see all my friends -- homesick Tom.

I used to study in Pembrokeshire College, Haverfordwest from September 2005 until July 2006. My first impressioned when I was there ( Haverfordwest) - "boring!", but now I admit that I really miss this place very - very much. As for me, this place is really closed to my heart. I loved the peoples there - friendly, relaxed atmosphere and calm place.
Hope one day I'll come to Haverfordwest again.:)

I grew up in H'west, my parents owned Wilton House Coffee Shop. I went to Sir Thomas Picton School, left there in 1988 and within 2 years had left Haverfordwest behind. Have not been back for nearly 20 years. Some time have a look at H'west web pages to see what has changed.
But today H'west came back to me. I am now working as an education assistant in a Dutch secondary school. I was given a workbook to see if we could use for a project on the four countries that make up Great britain. The town in Wales turned out to be HAVERFORDWEST.

Used to live in Johnston when I was at college in Haver. Pembrokeshire is the most amazing place to travel around and visit places. There is so much to do. Angle is so beautiful. Best nights out are always in Tenby and Saundersfoot. Haver was also good - used to go to the Waterfront, but I think it's changed now.
I have really happy memories of the college days there.
I plan on moving back when I retire!!!

I was born and brought up in Harford, left when I was 18, am 51 now but it will always be home to me. Good times at Taskers with Helen F Thomas, Velma Griffiths, and the Carmarthen Arms, then the Kings Arms when Derek and Val had it. Still come home now and then. Happy Days

I have not visited Haverfordwest my birthplace since 1995 when I spent a 10 day visit. It seemed no different than when I lived there except I was older. Great beaches, castles, lots of history.

its true, you can take the boy out of Haverfordwest - you just cant take the Haverfordwest out of the boy! At the end of the day, wherever i end up Haverfordwest and Pembrokeshire will always be home! Yeah, there are some drawbacks for younger people here but with the people and the place itself. Its what makes you the person you are today. One day i'll come home...but not yet! PS Does everybody in H/west know my best mate BOFF?

Spent all my teenage years trying to escape from this place and all my adult years trying to get back to it. As a teacher I'm only too aware of the impact your surroundings can have on you growing up and I feel truly sorry for any kiddies who will never know the joys of growing up with so much to explore. I'm nearly thirty now and can still remember when Kwick Save used to be where the new bus station is and Iceland used to be Tesco with clothes and toys upstairs. My favourite childhood treat was a trip to Newgale beach or Carew Market with my Grandparents and no amount of the designer clo! thes or top-up cards for phones that kids here crave could ever have rivalled that.As a child I cannot think of anything to rival the excitement of them opening the trim trail! Haha.As a teenager the Top of The Town roller discos were the highlight of my week, then progressing to The Kings Arms. Whoever turned it into the souless chain pub that it is now is a damn fool!On a recent trip home I was delighted to see some visitors to the area absolutely dumbfounded by the fact that the Palace Cinema still has an ice-cream seller with a tray who stands at the front between the trailers and the main features. Ah, Haverfordwest-the land that time may have forgot, but I never will!

This is for Nick and Karen Smith. I was an American kid who lived in Port Lion and was also in Air scouts 77-78. My father worked at the NAVFAC Brawdy. I loved going to Air Scouts there and was the only Boy scout in the group at the time. Many good memories. When did you leave HW.

How young they all are! I wrote a book for the Civic Society which was published in 1993 called "My Haverfordwest Childhood" which covered the years from 1918 to 1938 when I was married and then the war came. All my ancestry for 100s of years goes back to Pembrokeshire and particularly Haverfordwest where I lived as a child.

I was born in Haverfordwest and lived between there, Crundale and Milford Haven before moving to Canada with my family in 1978 at the age of 8 years. When I lived there I always enjoyed spending time at the canal with my cousins and walking around the town. We used to come back alot in the early years and as I got older was able to enjoy the Pubs especially the Bridge End which my Aunt and Uncle owned for alot of years. Looking at the pictures it is amazing how much has changed but good to still see the castle on the hill. My parents and brother are going back! this October for a visit and unfortuantly I will not be able to make it. However, I will be back in the next year or two to show my wife and son where I came from and what makes Haverfordwest such a great place. Cymru Forever!

I never thought I would be singing the praises of Haverfordwest, but I guess absence makes the heart grow fonder! Childhood memories of friends whose fathers were stationed at Brawdy, who seemed to pass through our lives so quickly, but were never forgotten, Tasker Milward school and that awful bottle green uniform, walking up High street and Market street as fast as I could and getting muscle ache as it's so steep, Swales music shop like Ali Baba's cavern and wonderful Geoff Swales, (what a character!) and that Georgian architecture (I still dream of owning Castle Terrace!)

I have lived in many places and am very impressed with the genuine people here. It is so easy to get into a conversation with someone in a queue, no one you know but always a great conversation and I like the better pace of life here. Many other places could learn to be like the locals here.

I love living in Haverfordwest. The people are hardworking ,focused and have their families at the centre of their hearts. As a community midwife I admire their pure earthy guts and enthusiasm for life. THis does not exclude themselves from going out and enjoying life. They sure know how to party-with some of the most amazingly musically talented people I know.

I lived in H-west from 80 - 84. I had a great time there and in fact I am going to visit in the summer being as I am now just down the road. I've left it too long. I cant wait to go and see all my old haunts and visit Broad haven.
I loved the summers and spent most days walking to the beach and just chilling down there.
I have heard it's changed a bit since the 80's so cant wait to see what it's like now.

You guys in that part of the world should consider yourselves lucky. I lived there 1985-88 and, to tell the truth, something about that area crosses my mind every day. Maybe I'll come back when I'm an old codger - but you probably won't want an English guy with a tad German accent!

I had the privelege of living at Port Lion outside of Haverfordwest. I was 12-13 years old and my Dad was attached to the US Naval Facility. I was there from 1976-1978. I have many wonderful times and made great friends while I was there. I am sorry to say when I left that I fell out of touch with them. I went to Sir Thomas Picton Secondary School. My favorite teacher was Mr. Skelly who also lived just up the street from me in Port Lion. His influence partially shaped my career path. I was there during the Queens Silver Jubilee and was a member of the Air Scouts at RAF Brawdy. I have great memories of my time there and would love to bring my family there to visit.

When ever I visit West Wales, which is almost every year, it is a must to go to Harford, a peaceful place. I always enjoyed looking around the market and a stroll by the river.
I normally stay near to Little Haven where my Grand-mother came from. I go up to the Point there and just sit to watch the sea birds and people enjoying themselves on the beach at Broad Haven.
A walk along the coastal path to Talbenny,St Brides, Nolton Haven or Newgale is just a great tonic.
I'll be they again this year. See you soon.

Although I'm a Rhondda boy,now living in Bridgend,my ancestral research shows that my family originated in the town.My gt,gt,gt grandfather,Thomas, and his family lived for many years in Quay st,at what is now the site of the Post Office, and before that his father,Charles.
His son William lived in Priory cottage.Wm drowned in the town in 1875.
Wm's son, joseph, lived in Wynch Lane before moving to Landshipping in 1880.So there was a century of connection with Haverfordwest, and it's quite a peculiar feeling for me whenever I "go home"

Spent almost 3 yrs in Haverfordwest while my dad was stationed there with the Navy back in 1984-1987. I went to Sir Thomas Picton School, and loved eating the chips from the shop behind there. I loved the little quaint town with all the shops. I still think about my good friend Fiona Jones. I would love to travel back to show my husband and children the beautiful scenery and castles, and perhaps pick up a little accent again ;)

Harfat born and bred, Gods own country, nowhere on this earth can compete, and I have travelled all over. WW11 and all that. We all stuck together as kids sure we were going to win which we did.
Lived next door to the POW camp. Made great friends with Italian prisoners.
Went to Taskers High School for girls late forties.

First of all thanks to the Beeb for keeping me linked to all the news in Pembs. Although I have not lived there for 10 years, having grown up in Pembs, and still with family and friends there, I try and visit every year. H-West has improved greatly over the years, yes we've lost RJ's etc.. but the development that has come since the days of a large windswept car park and rundown Kwiksave at the center of town next to the Cleddau are thankfully long gone. My sister and family moved to H-West 4 years ago after spending some time overseas, and at the time I was suprised as we had grown up in the country around Solva. But for her and her kids it is ideal, generally safe, with a sense of community, and if the worst that can happen is that people are drinking under age, then so be it, it never did me or anyone I know any harm.
What my visits have shown me since then are that the old divisions between those from town and those from the other great areas/towns of Pembs are not as strong as they once were, and I am glad as Pembs is a wonderful place, and you're all lucky to live there. Just make sure you get out and see it!

Born in the old County Hospital with the photo of cast and crew of Moby Dick in reception. Gregory Peck. Originally a boy from "Clarby" moved to Merlins Bridge in 1980. Had 10 good years in The Bridge and H'West. Played soccer for The Bridge, Crundale and Camrose. Remember fond nights down RJs/Masonic. The Old Georges before it turned into a New Age bistro, working in the Market Hall disco, Sir Thommy Picton school, Tasker Milward, working for the National Park and going to the Oak on the green at fair time! Happy daze! Family still there and sad I don't get back as much as I like.

As a Scot who has lived
in H'west for over 40 years I have read these comments and all people seem to think about is socialising and getting drunk. H'west in the 60's was the bees knees, I was sent here by the Navy in '63 and I can still remember the drive to Brawdy as we came down towards Newgale, the tide was in the waves were breaking over the stones and Newgale hill in front of us, only God could create a picture like that. The town was exactly the same, go out without locking your door, friendly neighbours, Phipps' Chipshop, not too crowded streets, dances in the Drill Hall and definitely no monstrosity like that council building. H'west is a good place to live but it used to be a great place to live.

Don't regret a bit of it, could maybe do with a few different shops but hey if all shops were on your doorstep you wouldn't need to go to Swansea or Cardiff, I enjoy those trips, I think Harford is brill.

Dai - Swindon
I lived and grew up in Prendegast haverfordwest, and have very fond memories. Times on the beaches in summer the long walks around the coastal paths and sights that would take your breath away. The Friday and Saturday night pub crawls ending up in RJ's nightspot. Then at the end of the night meeting up with everyone on the square, they were very great times. Unfortunatly I had to move away as the job situation was very poor about ten years ago. But my heart is still there and I come home every year to see my family. It's surprising to see how much the town has now changed since I moved away. God I can still remember when Kwik Save and the Drill Hall and the huge car park used to be before the council built that awful multi storey car park which looks more like a prison block. I can also remember when the river burst it's banks and flooded the whole lot.
Living in Swindon, England the night life isn't as friendly, and everyone is rushing around with no time for each other and so ignorant. But one thing I can honestly say, if you meet a Welshman in England they will always stop and spare time for a friendly chat. Especially if they were originally from Pembrokeshire, and every English person you do manage to talk to always have a good word to say about Pembrokeshire, and if they've been to Harford they always praise the locals.

It's funny how age makes you look back, and realize how fortunate I was to be born and raised in Haverfordwest. Left @17 to join the Army... been back only a few times in 33 years, the last time 16 years ago. I miss evening's in the Friar's (my late ex father-in-law ran the place)... the Coast Path, sitting on the wall outside the Swan in Little Haven in the evenings... and a few people who regretably I haven't stayed in touch with... Andy John from Dew Street, Paul + Dianne Lucas, Julie Barrett, Ellen Grey (kept her pony at our stables in Portfield Gate)... looking forward to visiting one day soon. Great place with great people!!!

Loved so much of my childhood in Haverfordwest (fishing, pony club, walking, Little Haven, Saundersfoot and working on the market). Living in the very safe atmosphere of our town. The local school Sir Thomas Picton was so very friendly, happy times. Lots of friends. Living in Westhoughton, Lancashire now and working in the ticket office at Manchester Airport Rail Station. Visited Haverfordwest every year since I was born (in England) - 37 years of age. Great place and wonderful surrounding areas. Looking forward to spending August there......

I could never leave Harfard, it's the best place in the whole world.

I spent my teenage years in Hwest back in the 1970's. Very fond memories of time spent at the Youth Club on Tower Hill. I attended Taskers School for Girls and got a top-notch education and went on to the Pembrokeshire Technical College and worked at the Midland Bank on High Street before moving away. It's a lovely quaint town, with lots of history - but with very few opportunites for people regarding jobs and so many restrictions on starting up a new business, then or now. I enjoy coming back for visits, but find the limited opportunties for jobs and depth of regulations that work against people who want to open up a new business so repressive, I could never come back and live in Hwest. There has to be a way to balance and protect the historic character of Hwest with facilitating and attracting new business opportunties. Unfortunately I think the life has being choked out the town.

Born and bred a long-neck, but even I would not venture out to the town centre on a Saturday night.I know town centres all over the country are like this now but would it not be cool if somehow we could make Harfat different, because it could really be an idyllic place to live.

My mother was born in Haverfordwest and I brought my family to see the place where their grandmother was born. They really loved it as it was so different for them as they are Australian, and my sister still lives in your lovely town.

Nick from Pembrokeshire
Pembrokeshire is a lovely place to live. The county town is great in the daytime, but in the night the underage drinking, crowds of drunks around the Castle Square, and the lack of a decent cultural venue is the downside. Above all else it is a disgrace that a town with so many problems caused by alcohol is turning a wonderful historic building at the heart of the town into yet another pub.

We should all count ourselves as being extremely lucky to live in Pembrokeshire, it's a fantastic place and there is no-where else like it on this earth, just a shame that great jobs are so hard to come by!

I lived in Haverfordwest in 1972. I found the whole city to be filled with some of the most wonderful people I had ever met. I was struck by a car in 1973 while there. While in hospital there I remember that I met some of the most wonderful people that didn't even know me that came to visit me. I will be coming over from the US to re-visit and hopefully recapture the joy that living there once gave me. Tony Bennett may have left his heart in San Fransisco... But I left mine in Haverfordwest.

Haverfordwest is a great place its full of friendly people who are up for a great laugh! I've been coming to Havford for the last 13 years since my dad moved there and I love it!

Poor choice of shops. Too many card and charity shops, in the winter no where to go with a young family. No real child friendly pubs to have a relaxed family meal in. On the plus side we have fantastic beaches and the coastal path.
As a local I feel that we rip tourists off in the prices we charge in cafes etc. Oakwood is very overated and expensive for a day out.

Kathryn from Cardiff
I have recently moved from Haverfordwest to Cardiff with my sister to start a career in the high flying world of Credit Control. I never thought that I would miss H'west as much as I do, especially the night life. Even though it's a small place the night life is so much better than here in Cardiff, with a much more friendly atmosphere in which to enjoy a drink. I really miss the Milford Arms where there is always a funny story or 2 to be heard from the often eccentric locals. I can't wait for my holiday's to come as I know where I'll be heading - due west down the M4 and back to Harford!!

I lived near H'West for three years and only circumstances have forced a move away. A lovely town with friendly people and even shopping was a pleasure. I hope to return but who knows?

I've been around the world and I,I,I .....I still love Harford!!
Yes it's a class place, the pearl of Pembrokeshire. We've got all the shops you could ever want: Woolworths, The Welsh Bakery and the newly (and somewhat contraversially) opened sex shop 'Heaven'.
In addition there's the class nite-spot's such as Minnie's and RJ's- happy days!!
I can safely say that aside from Fishguard, there's no other place I'd rather be!!
Keep it real, keep it Harford!

I was born and raised till the age of 19 in Haverfordwest. I didn't realise how much I took for granted till recently chatting with my city friends about growing up and how much I had available to me.
Miles of coastline to go camping on, rock pools caves, surf. Open fields, woods, farmland, hills.
I will be travelling back to Haverfordwest and Pembrokeshire all the more when I get my wheels up and running; I want to take my friends to my childhood haunts, I'd happily take the 2 hour journey from Cardiff to Haverfordwest just to spend a few hours walking through Picton Castle and the like.
Couldn't have asked for a better place to grow up!

I'm originally from Malvern, Worcesterhsire. I'm only 18 and it was a big decision moving down here with my boyfriend, Neil. I've settled in really well, the only downside is that there is only one decentish club!

Brian Thomas from Vancouver, WA, USA
I came over on holiday this past May and stayed, as my father's family came over from nearby Wolfscastle to the USA 120 years ago. It was a very profound experience for me, doing both family research and socializing with locals and relatives in pubs, etc. I can't wait to come over again this May! Absolutely fantastic.

Like many Americans who were stationed at the US Naval Facility at Brawdy during the mid 80's, I lived in Haverfordwest. I loved the warm, and welcoming people, the history of the area, and the "hometown" feel of the place. It is also were my children were born. I hope to one day be able to go back there. You truly have a wonderful place to live.

I was born and raised in Haverfordwest. I moved to USA in 1983 and long for the day when I can move back. America is great but nothing compares to the community and culture of H'west. If my story sounds familiar call my Nan and get in touch. I miss my friends.

At the moment i'm on a deployment in the Falklands and it's freezing cold. It's summer time in Harford at the moment and It breaks my heart when I think of all my mates living the dream on castle square on a Saturday night, then on Sunday going to The Glen for Sunday dinner before heading off to 'The Milf' for an all dayer.

Having lived in Haverfordwest while stationed at Naval Facility Brawdy in the 1980's, it was wonderful to again be able to see the grand old town that my family and I came to love. I long for the day that we will be able to return.

I am originally from Haverfordwest but was drawn to the bright lights of the city which are now sadly fading. I really miss Harford and really really want to move home but the job situation isn't great. I'm sooo homesick :( boo hoo

As someone who lived and worked in Haverfordwest in the mid to late '70s and has been back several times since I am apalled at the decision to turn the Shire Hall into a pub! This is the ultimate desecration of one of the town's finest buildings. Having seen what JD Wtherspoon's have done to other buildings up and down the country I shudder to think what will happen to the Shire Hall.
Wed Mar 24 07:51:48 2004

The people about Haverfordwest are what make it special! Everyone knows everyone, there's a strong sense of community. The only pity was they closed the one 'proper' nightclub 'RJ's' - some ace nights were had there - even if there was carpet on the walls!!!

I just love the friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

There's some really interesting history attached to Haverfordwest. Locals should take time out to explore the historical buildings - did you know that Foley House in Goat Street was designed by John Nash?

I've only just recently moved to Haverfordwest but I can honestly say that I'm enjoying living here. People are friendly and there are lots of pubs to choose from!
