I was reading through your website about Fishguard. I am interested in it as my grandfather told a family tale about the family having land at a place called "Green Meadows". According to him you took the train to Fishguard then a truck took you the few miles to "Green Meadows".

I can find no reference to this place anywhere, and unfortunately now he is dead...The story goes that they were given some of the land by the "lord of the manor" I also have no idea who, or even if, there was such a thing, or whether that person was just built up from a farmer who actually owned his land...Are there any, or were there any large estates in the area. We would be talking mid 1800's. Any help you could give me would be much appreciated.

Absolutely love the place. My mum is from Fishguard and we spent loads of time there as kids staying with my grandparents. My uncle, aunt & cousins still live there. Going back down for a week in September and can't wait. Really disappointed that Strawbridge's is now a kebab shop! and that Nicholl's has gone but still go and sit on the guns every time I go there.

Been visiting Fishguard for the last three years with friends and dogs, we all love the place, found a great cottage in the town, oh so confortable. The locals are great, always a warm welcome in the pub, the walking is good no matter what the weather, but the best feeling is the getting away from our rushed busy lives and being able to just chill out.

I love Fishguard!...It has always held a sense of bliss for me, like a life we would all love to live. We actually have a picture in our hall of the birds-eye view over the whole of Fishguard...

Wow it's so great to read...about Fishguard and the folks there. I will travel to Fishguard in June this year with my husband for a holiday. We will stay in a beautiful cottage for one week, but first we will walk the coastpath in two weeks.

Never been to Fishguard but spend plenty of time in Wales every year. In June this year travelling by ferry from Fishguard to Rosslare. Can't wait to see this pretty little place, as all the comments have whetted my appetite. Never having had to find or drive on a ferry before, am anxious to find it first time. Any tips?

I have lived in Fishguard all my life not much to do - no nightclubs. Bring back the sports club. It is the same people out all the time nothing for the kids but I still love the place.

Born and raised in Fishguard, but left in 1996 to live in Canada. I recognise a couple of names on the comments list here. Sarah McColl being one...I hope you're doing well...and I hope we'll meet again some day. I recommend Fishguard as a place to visit to anyone. Beautiful scenery and friendly people.

Really miss Fishguard and Goodwick. Moved away 5 yrs ago to be close to the city as no jobs there! Shame you can't have the best of both worlds! Have no idea how they expect you to be able to buy a Pembrokeshire house on Pembrokeshire wages!

Roger Evans, exiled in Saudi Arabia

Exile update...exile update...Hughes the butchers GONE! (though little shop hanging on by tenby house) Fishguard square/golden mile now in danger of zero shops...

Enough to drive visiting exiles to drink, luckily this is still easily accomplished, with the splendid addition of 'coast' should great food be needed.

Rather sad to see bouncers and stab-vest equipped police...all part of new Britain I suppose...

Town hall refurbishment and library/tapestry relocation a wonderful thing, shame no one could...fix the Town Hall clock though...oh dear, turning into grumpy rant - prob due to year-long wait to next visit...ah Pwlderri, I miss you more than felin foel...

We'd never heard of Fishguard (being from the bottom of the earth!)and were going to stay there only one night, but made it three, and wish we could have made it a month. Lots to see and enjoy, courteous and friendly folk everywhere, transport connections to other parts of Wales and England, and a hostel that had an atmosphere like staying at a friend's house. And we hadn't then yet even heard about the music festivals!(Note to self: Must go there again soon).

I grew up in Fishguard but moved 5yrs ago to Swansea. When living in Fishguard all I wanted to do was get out of the place and see the world - took it all for granted really, but now I'm older and have a lil one I do miss the place and the friendly people too. Miss my darts in the Pendre, and how can I forget the Bryn on a Sat night hahaha..... I try to come back as often as possible, my lil one loves it down there...Its lovely to get away for a lil break from the fast lane of city life...see you all soon!

My travel group and I went to Wales this year, were based on the coast near Moylegrove, and we kept coming back to Fishguard. The folk festival was tremendous, the scenery was gorgeous, the people were lovely, and the Last Invasion tapestry was amazing. Can't wait to go back.

Fishguard is a beautiful place to live. It's a shame so many local people have had to move away because of a significant lack of jobs. I hear people say "There's nothing to do in Fishguard" but to me it will always be a very special place. Wish we could bring all our locals back!

    Becky Davies - FISHGUARD!!!!
Fishguard...is the place to be..well in the summer anyway..unless it's going to be like 2007's summer, which was probably the worst summer ever, rained for nearly the whole six weeks! 2008's summer on the other hand is going to be great...coastal paths are great here or just chill out on the golden mile! Fishguardians 4eva!

Returning to Fishguard is like returning to a little piece of heaven. The coastal walks, the friendly pubs, and most of all visiting family. I went to school in Fishguard. My Dad was born in Rosebush and my grandfather was a train driver for the Great West Railway. Can't wait to be back in May 2008.

Simon Turner - Beziers South of France
I was born in Haverfordwest and brought up in Fishguard. I left Fishguard when I was 19. Had some great teenage years in and around Fishguard and wouldn't change those years for anything. Great memories...it's a beautiful part of the world and had some great pubs. Everytime I go back it's like a time warp. Not much has really changed in the 20 years since I left! Not sure I could live there again now, but I'm lucky enough to live in the South of France which is equally as beautiful and the weather is much better!

    Angharad Schell, Salisbury

I've been going to Fishguard since I was a kid and there is something a bit special about the place. The people are so friendly, an attitude that carries over to the many welcoming pubs - proper good old fashioned pubs mind you, not bars.

The coastline is beautiful and there are many breathtaking walks to take along the cliffs. Admittedly there's not masses to do much of the time, but if you really want to get away from everything and relax, it's the place to go.

Just rolled in after a New Years Eve on Fishguard Square, WoooWeee what a night. It is and always will be the best place in the UK to be on Xmas Eve, but for all you Fishguardians out there who left, I just want to tell you that they are going to pull down that wonderful old building better known as Fishguard junior school and they are putting up a TESCO grrrrrr....Sad Fishguard is falling into the same old trap so many other beauty spots fell into.

Missed the daytime ferry by seconds and went into Fishguard looking for something to eat and somewhere to have a moan...ten to three Fishguard closed but was direected by a local to Bar Five...What a place...excellent and cheap lobster and wine with spectacular views and great service...The decor and attention to detail would not be out of place anywhere..stress gone we ambled around and eventually caught a night ferry..should have stayed the night in Fishguard I think.

Used to live in Pantyrychen in Goodwick...what a fantastic place, and lovely people. Had some wonderful nights in the various pubs in Goodwick with some tremendous friends Martin and Kathy Hall, who are still great friends today, I came out of the RAF and worked for Martin and Bill Hall for a while what an experience. Always going back with my caravan it is the best place I have ever been to!

The names on the stones in the gorsedd circle in Fishguard are the places the stones came from. e.g. the stone with St Nicholas on it came from that village. Not what I'd call spoiling them. Very good folk festival in Fishguard at the end of May. Brilliant atmosphere. See pembrokeshire-folk-music.com for details.

Loved Fishguard so much we bought a house there. Wanted to move to west Wales and stayed overnight in many places, Milford, Pembroke, Cardigan but Fishguard stole our heart! Where else can you find 14 pubs with a half mile radius and great people, food and scenery? We just love it and can't wait to be there always.

I'm sure that most indigenous Fishguardareans love people who visit our wonderful town and take great pleasure in the beautiful scenery that surrounds it, but I would like to say one thing to the small percentage of people who visit the area and say, "Where's Marks and Spencer?" GO HOME!!! (but on the other hand if the managing director of M&S is reading this, I must say I like your underwear range)

I love Fishguard. The scenery and the sense of space and peace are wonderful. The local people are as friendly as you will find anywhere in the world and you can find hidden gems around every corner. I have got to say that the Royal Oak in the Square in something a little bit special - as well as being the centre piece of the town and the Last Invasion museum, it offers a wonderful range of food, real ale, music and other activities. In the last week we had a mind blowing folk session on Tuesday, a funfilled quiz on Sunday and live music on Friday and Saturday from a superb ! singer who turned out to be the landlord! A great place in a great town. Fishguard you amazed me.

I am 44 years of age and have been coming to Fishguard - well Strumble peninsular, for as many years. I now bring my husband and the kids bring their friends - they even travel down on their own now they are grown up, to enjoy the sea and the surf. I can't think of anywhere else that makes me smile to just think of it. The people are terrific and we have some wonderful friends down there. Have a relaxing coffee in the Royal Oak and mix with the local people - they're great. Love it all.

I couldn't live much further away from Fishguard these days, but I still have a real soft spot for my home town and it's lovely to see here how other people feel about one of the most beautifully located little towns on earth.

I have to admit though, I appreciate the awesome beauty of the coastline and Fishguard's quirky little ways more now than I did growing up there - life's funny like that :) I wish I could visit more often, and I never seem to have enough time when I'm there, but I love the feeling of coming 'home' when I can get there.

I tell everyone over here in Oz that they should visit Pembs in general and Fishguard in particular when they come to the UK. I hope they take my advice and share in a bit of Pembrokeshire paradise.

During the War stayed at a B&B in centre of Fishguard. A gang 4, three men and a boy, I was the boy, we were cutting up and removing scrap steel from the quarry and area at Porthgain. While at Porthgain we saw a endless or so it seemed pod, shoal? of Porpoise, the Coast Guard said it was a very rare sight, and perhaps years before it would occur again. While in Fishguard at a Cinema, Sailors from a Submarine were in attendance, I was amused to see them sitting in a row, I likened it to Birds on a Telephone Line all together and all alike. Although under age I used to frequent the Pubs, at one Pub there were many pictures of Boxers on the walls I belive a Thomas an ex-Boxer ran it, about 62 years of age at that time, we got to chatting and I remarked for a Champion, he had no visable signs of ever being in the Ring, he replied with a smile, and to me, typical Welsh humour, "The idea was to hurt your opponent and not let him hurt you." I enjoyed the time I spent in Fishguard.

Came upon Fishguard by accident... and we're so gald we did! Great walk along the coastal path, lovely lunch in the Orange tree and then that evening we happened to stumble across The Royal Oak where a charity quiz was going on - it was lovely.

There were groups of old (us included!) & young people alike all bantering with each other and having fun - we've never seen anything quite like it! It was a truly wonderful night and a special big thank you to Mandy (the lady behind the bar) who made us feel completely welcome and even helped us out with a few questions!

Thanks also to all those people in the quiz, my husband and I have not laughed so much in ages! We'll be coming back to Fishguard very soon!

Having passed through Fishguard last Christmas we stopped overnight in a lovely little pub in Goodwick called the Hope & Anchor. The ferries were playing merry hell so me and me fella decided to stay with the Roche's for a night. What a welcome we had! The food was lovely (try the soup of the day in a bread bowl) and the Guinness was almost as good as the stuff back home. Also- if you're looking for a taxi- get 'Carrot's Cab's'- he was a mad fella!!

My grandfather had a farm in south west wales called Disgwylfa. They left in 1928 for a plot of land in Canada. Life was very hard for them at that time. They had a dairy farm and folks couldn't afford to buy their milk. They could only barter or trade milk for a chicken etc. Grandparents left with 17 children to make a new life. I guess if he didn't come to Canada I wouldn't be here. My father did say that he and his brothers would pick mushrooms on the bluffs near Fishguard and Tenby.

Only been through Fishguard once, on my way to Ireland. A beautiful sunny, calm day resulted in first a lovely stroll along the long Breakwater to where a lighthouse stands in the bay and secondly some lovely photographs of my now late wife. You haven't played a large piece in my life Fishguard but you were the start of a lovely holiday and some equally important to me photographs upon which I gan gaze at times, recalling a very much happier period. Thanks Fishguard, maybe one day......

Fishguard is and always has been my home, although I now live in the US. I love the people, so much colour! The coastline, Gwaun Valley in the spring and fall, the views from the Marine Walk, the old fort, and a pint or two at the Ship in Lower Town.

The countryside is glorious, the weather, well, basically, it sucks, but, even that has its own charm at times, such as when a huge gale blows in from the Irish Sea, or when the snowdrops smile in the winter sun in some hedgerow here or here. Wild flowers abound throughout the year, and the gorse is golden in every month with an "r" in it.

Fishguard is not about big city life with all that the big cities have to offer. Fishguard is all about being close to God, close to nature, close to real people who are kind and gentle, soft spoken, and well mannered. So Fishguard, "a step back in time", is where my heart lives every minute and every day. Cymru am byth.

I was born in Camberra, Stop & Call Goodwick when it was a Nursing Home. I believe Nurse Price was the midwife. My Father worked at the Armament depot, Trecwn. Having moved around while my husband served in the R.A.F. I had been unable to return until recently. We have enjoyed our holidays in the area over the last few years.

Fishguard to me is something which comes very close to the the Edge of the world. A truly wonderful gateway to Ireland. Only too bad that the stone circle has been damaged by putting name tags on the uprights.

So plesed to hear that Phil Gwyn and Daniel still miss the old place [Goodwick]. It was obviously a great place for them to be young and care free. That's why we choose it to raise a family in a safe and beautiful environment.

Fair do's- if you're looking for celebrities, exclusive nightclubs and designer shops then don't come to Fishguard.

If you like the theatre, ballet and punting down rivers then again, don't come to Fishguard.

However, if you are looking for a good time in a sleepy backwater of a place where natural beauty abounds, the locals are friendly and good food and drink is a-plenty then give Fishguard a try.

Excellent times to visit are on New Year's Eve (huge street party- 3rd best place to be in the world on New Year's Eve according to The Guardian) and over the August Bank Holiday weekend (awesome marquee event in Newport, just up the road).

If you're looking for a cosy place to stay for a few nights, a good meal and a tidy pint then might I recommend the Hope and Anchor Inn, Goodwick. It's a cracking litle pub with good atmosphere and some very friendly locals!

And for your information, contrary to the Barry Welsh Comedy Show, Kenny Tw*t is not the mayor of Fishguard!!

Originally from Stop and call in goodwick. My heart is firmly lodged in Fishguard partly because I ain't got a passport yet, but because its where I had my first kiss! That's right, Fiona Henshall stole my heart!

Fishguard is nice in the summer, but in the winter there is not a lot to do for young people, there is Point which is open every day but only till 7pm and youth club twice a week, but apart from that there is nothing!!!!!

I feel that young people need more motivation and opportunity so that they can live quality lives -both through solid employment and good living standards. If buses were free for local people peoples lives would be easier.

There seems to be far more opportunities in other European countries.

The best thing about Fishguard that it is pretty and attracts tourists but we don't capitalise on this enough. Maybe from the constraints put on us from the Pembs Coast National Park.

The lovely things about Fishguard are the lovely scenery and the sea with all of those beautiful animals in that deep blue sea.

Some of the things that Fishguard lacks is the jobs for the younger generation, and if you manage to find a job there is lack of pay.

So I say this now, the public transport is among the poorest transport in Pembrokshire.

    I love Wales!

The good things in Fishguard are the youth centre Point, the cinema, and there is some nice views. The bad things about Fishguard is there is not a great deal of encouragement for people of my age to get a good job.
