Tom Jenkins (O'Farrell). Port Macquarie, NSW, Aust
Born in Cardiff in Nov. '37, but lived in The Queens Hotel from '40 to 1947.School at Pentre Porth, remembering Miss Lewis form that time. Then a divorce. Later name changed to O'Farrell.Played in The Avenue with friends from 33.On a recent visit last year (again), was sad that The Parade was now a car park - but still signs of where we used to go down the Green - much to the alarm of everyone of our elders. Two great girls (all but big Sisters) still live in the vicinity and haven't changed a bit over the years.I'm seventy two just now, but still a tear comes to my eye when I think of the Christmas services at the Church up by the Infirmary, and crunching back home again in the snow just like walking on sugar. The old Pump house is finished but the sound of the place still lingers in my ears.Carmarthen. You're a great place even though you don't know it's raining until it stops. The pleasure of being able to walk through waist high grass knowing that there are no "nasties" is quite an odd feeling. Wouldn't do that here in Australia. Too many dangers lurking. Keep well all of you.

I lived in Carmarthen until I was 36-years-old. I have been back lots of times over the years and always love to hear that lovely Welsh accent. Carmarthen, I think has changed a lot over the years, not always for the better. But it will always be where I come from.

I went to Trinity Coll for a year in the late 1970s and still recall how lovely the town was (as well as Llanstephan). All the local students were so welcoming and the town itself was a joy to explore. Many evenings spent in local pubs and long walks through town instead of studying. I've been back a few times since and still feel like it's "home."

I have a tear in my eye and a quiver to my lower lip after having just read through all these lovely comments about Carmarthen.
My parents lived in Cwmduad where and I and my fellow siblings grew up. When we were children Carmarthen was an exciting place called "town" where we went to the fair and got the chance to win a coconut or a goldfish in a plastic bag; to the Lyric where I saw my first movie but best of all, to the markets on a Wednesday where I loved to listen to the auctioners selling off the farmers stock and then to wander with mother around the stalls at the produce market, stopping to buy a new pair of shoes for school from Mr & Mrs Luther Edwards' stall, and get an icecream from the van of a nearby vendor.
also went to a school in town called "The Grange" for a little while. My Mum moved into town many years ago as did most of my brothers and sisters. I left on my great adventure to Australia from Carmarthen Station in 1965 and I love it here, but a large chunk of my heart still resides there in Carmarthen and Cwmduad. Many, many happy memories!

Brought up in Carmarthen and went to the Model School. Lived in Water Street opposite the chapel and my father Bill worked in a garage in the street as well as driving taxis from the railway stations. He often took Dylan Thomas from the station to the Boat House. He was usually drunk (that's Dylan, not my Dad). My abiding memory is of how friendly the locals were. I often go back, and they still are.

Born and brought up for my first five years in Carmarthen, I have never stopped loving the place. Each time I visit it brings back memories of my grandparents Tommy and Vina Lewis of Park Hall and the wonderfully happy memories of my times there. I recently went back to college and enrolled at Trinity where my father had done his teacher training. I achieved my MA and hope that somehow, my father and his parents know it.

Carmarthen is the hub of the world. Like many, I've moved away after leaving school but my childhood there was first class. The schools, people, proximity to the coast and the friends I made, make it one of the best places in my world. Had a wonderful Christmas there this year and I look forward to coming home again - soon.

Carmarthen is a great place to shop, I much prefer it to Llanelli or Swansea. I've also just discovered a new place to eat, a lovely coffee shop called carpe diem at the top of blue st. They have a lovely area to sit down and watch the world go by upstairs and they do a gorgeous pannini and even nicer coffee.

Carmarthen what more does one need. A pity though that Jessops has closed. For a good meal especially breakfast go to cafe Blakeman above the carpet shop near the bus depot. The RAF gremlins club serves good food too.The downside...more car parking is needed, so come on council spend less on the Towi river roundabout [West]BUT Carmarthen is still the best town in the WEST.

Carmarthen has and always will be my home! With its fantastic scenery and friendly neighbours - what more could someone ask for? I have to pay a special dedication to Elizabeth "Liz" Evans of the Carmarthen and District Youth Opera, who showed great dedication and support to the youth of Carmarthen. Thank you soooo much!
I am currently living in Cardiff...however always look forward to going home and being a part of the tradition of Carmarthen once more...will always have Carmarthen in my heart and will cherish the happy memories and good friends that I have met from this special place!

I miss Carmarthen loads and it's history more so the friendly people although its a big town you cant walk down the street with out a smile or saying hi to someone I loved that. The Quins Club was just the best place ever (which is were I met my husband Brett), I met the best friends ever in Carmarthen and although I have moved on I know that I will always be welcomed back and remembered, thanks.

Carmarthen is a lovely town. I hate it when people say that the people are ignorant and it's a lot friendlier than the town of Bridgend, which I am ashamed to say that I live in (Bridgend that is.) Bridgend hasn't got a lot of history. Carmarthen is full of history and it is a wonderful town to come to and do shopping.
Miss you Carmarthen.

I love Carmarthen as it is a quiet and peaceful town. Everyone is friendly and helpful, the locals are great.. It has endless rolling hills and fantastic windy roads to drive you can really feel like you have gotten away from it all. The air is clean and free from City smog, take a good clean breathe in and feel good.
Best of all it as my work, The Charity Cerebra for Brain Injured Children just down the road from where I live so I can bimble along every morning and not be in a mad rush.

My Father's family were Camarthen people, My Grandmother (Edith Prynn)and her sisters (Katy and Lizzie) lived in Chapel St by the Weslyan chapel. My memories are from Christmases in the early 50's. My Grandmother always had a Taxi waiting to pick us up from the station or Lammas st where the coaches stopped. On christmas eve , Bonnie the rag and bone man would decorate his horse and cart and tour the towns pubs. The horse making it's way home unaided, as bonny was well and truely full of the Christmas spirit ! My Gran used to give me money to spend at Woolworths and I used to run through the passage connecting Chapel st to the square to get to the shops. Alas the Chapel, the houses relatives and Bonnie are now all gone.

The best thing about Carmarthen is the countryside; it makes you feel free to do what you want. You can take your dog down and have a good time; the next thing Oakwood all the good rides - I like Hydro the best but the others are good; I like all the football teams; my hobbies are football and rugby.

We are writing this in our Literacy lesson. The scenery around Carmarthen is lovely, especially summer sunsets over Llansteffan Beach. As a class of typical 10 year olds, we particularly enjoy shopping in Carmarthen (note to all parents: we don't mean food shopping!). Our school is very near to the leisure centre, so we use its excellent facilities often.

In 1976 my husband and I fell in love with Carmarthen Bay. We stopped in Carmarthen and had a great experience with the local folks, especially friendly people at a pub near the train station. We decided that if we ever had a daughter we would name her Carmarthen. In 1982 when she was born we started planning for a return trip to show her the beautiful area and the people that we remembered so fondly. Last year Carmarthen graduated from college. We spent 3 weeks, with backpacks and using public transportation exploring and admiring your magnificantly beautiful country. We often find ourselves talking about the experience and hope to return.

Ian, now in London.
I was born and schooled here. Went away to university and found the door firmly shut when I tried to return, due to local government policy on language, which is a shame, as it's the sort of place that my kids, especially my son, would thrive in, and the business I run would have created much needed employment for local people.

My father was transferred to Carmarthen in 1940. We lived in Hall Street above a tobacco shop. I last visted Carmarthen in 1980 when on vacation from Panama., found it had not changed too much. Boars Head and other old watering holes still intact.
My parents name were Roland and May Akers, anybody still alive that might remember them.
Hope to visit your lovely town next year.

I was born within sight of the Old Oak in 1948 then we moved to the brand new Park Hall. I lived in Carmarthen until my father got a teaching job in Yorkshire. My Carmarthen grandparents saw us coming to visit them every school holiday. They were wonderful people - Tommy and Elvina Lewis. I love them and still miss them so very much. Now I have no home to visit in the town so every time I go there I am both thrilled and heartbroken... Carmarthen is my heart's home.

Carmarthen is a great little town to live in (one of the reasons I chose to go to uni here). Trinity College is probably one of the only university colleges where nearly everyone knows your name.
Extremely nice people and a overall friendly atmosphere which I will miss greatly when I finish my final year next year.
Lots of lovely little pubs too!

I love coming down to Carmarthen as one of my sons lives in Llangunnor and the other at Upper Tumble and their workshops are at Crosshands, as there are 4 grandchildren it makes the Carmarthen area really special to me.

We moved here 5 years ago. We lived near Heathrow Airport and now we would not live anywhere else. The town is nice and the people are nice and so much to do and see. What a lovely place to live.

Iau - Jonstown Carmarthen
To me there is no other place in the world I would want to call home. Born and bred here and extremly proud of it.The only thing that spoils it now is the influx of newcomers to the town and surrounding areas. Once I could walk down the street and talk to almost everyone I met, now I don't recognize anyone...

It is interesting, as someone has already pointed out previously, why many people who have posted great comments about carmarthen on this site do not actually still live here....Surely that tells us something?

I love to visit Carmarthen. I have family living in Pencader which is set ia a beautiful area and have fond memories of childhood visits. It's a shame that it's Welsh identity seems to be disappearing due to the influx of so many English families.
The Market in Carmarthen has a real market feel to it and the town centre is much better than Llanelli, it's a pity that very little thought has gone into preserving the way Llanelli Market used to be and the priority at the moment seems on out of town development rather than developing the town centre.

Born at Capel Canol (Capel Dewi) 1964 and very proud of my heritage. Circumstances have taken me to Australia (Belimbla Park, 45 minutes south of Sydney.) I love my home town, Carmarthen, my wife, children &
Dellboy!:)It is very hard sometimes to deal with two cultures when I miss the things that Carmarthen (and Capel Dewi) means to me. All that I can say is "G'day" and ogi ogi ogi!!!

Robert - Bridgend
I was born in Carmarthen in 1966, but my younger brother & I had to leave in 1979 after my parents had a divorce. We moved to the Bridgend area & I would love to move back to Carmarthen as the town of Bridgend has never meant anything to me. Carmarthen is a lovely town with excellent shopping.

Carmarthen has an excellent shopping facility the night life is OK but people rather go to Llanelli because its alot larger and has more variety of pubs and clubs.

It's not a place you're likely to forget. I went to Uni in Carmarthen between 95-99 and it holds some special memories. A truly distintive place with such a strong character. The dark, dreary rainy days can hang when you live there but the town also has a certain mystique about it.

I had lived in Carmarthen all my life and it's the best place in the world. It's full of magic. I moved away to go to uni, I miss it all the time and all I want is to go home. The only problem is they want to rip the market apart. The market is legend.

We are now back in Gala and I miss Carmarthen every day. A great place to live that is steeped in history. Great town, great people, great shops!

The best thing about is that it has a market which dates back 100's of years and the Lyric Theatre which is a old fashioned theatre with daily showings of film releases and live shows and it has a cutural instiution in Carmarthen- the Carmarthen and District Youth Opera which has been entertaining audiences in Carmarthen for nearly thirty years.

Very busy village, more for the English people than the Welsh people. Some people are working very hard over the Welsh language.

Carmarthen is a unique town
a transport hub
and rural life meeting point.
The council though should be doing more to promote its tourism potential,
a good choice of art galleries
and craft shops
sit nicely next to the high street big names.
How many people travel through Carmarthen each year on their way to holiday in Pembs?
The council should be attracting these visitors not to go further West until visiting Carmarthens old charm and modern exuburance; such history and diversity should be showed off at every opportunity.
More hotels are needed for Carmarthen to become a base for history, art n crafts, the gardens and dramatic coastline.
Kent is known as the garden of England
so should Carmarthen be known as the garden of Wales.

I went to the 'Art College' in 86 and left in 89 (ish). Stayed on for a further 10 years and both my beautiful daughters were born in Carmarthen (and are very proud of the fact). Forced back across the Severn due to a lack of work ... but still think of Carmarthen as 'home'. Visit often and until I moved to my present home in Wiltshire had never come across the warmth of the Carmarthenshire 'Townies' and 'Hambones'. Roots still lie in Carmarthen and I will return!

From playing pool in Meinciau to walking on the beach of Pembrey (??). I have great memories in Llanstefan Castle and Kidwelly Castle. It has just been great! I'll never forget you... all of you.

My family (Evans) are Welsh and I used to visit my (now late) Uncle Canon Trefor Evans in Lampeter. I would get the train from Paddington to Carmarthen, and then the bus to the Black Lion in Lampeter. Many fond memories. I was born in the U.S. but my still Welsh speaking mother, now in Florida, instilled in me my "Welshness," which will never fade! I have the Welsh flag stuck on my car's bumper. People think I'm a member of some weird cult. Well, I am! Cymru am byth!

I lived in Skewen/Neath/Swansea as a child and went to Camarthen several times. I was scared of the sea until someone on one of my trips there, swam in shallow water and told me she was nervous too. She was an adult so it made it less scary.
I loved it there and love the ocean!

I fell in love, not only with how beautiful Carmarthen is, but with a wonderful man who calls Carmarthen home. There is no place else on earth that I would rather be. I'll soon be moving there and it's somewhere we'd love to raise a family together. I can't wait to live in the beauty and rich history of Carmarthen!

I love Carmarthen because my father was born there and we would drive from Neath to see my grandparents in Pentryfellin Street. I loved walking through the stock markets and watching the auctions. I remember Merlin's Oak. Is it still standing. Carmarthen always seemed like a cosy, loving place to me and I miss it.

Carmarthen is a great town to live in, along with a football side that plays in the Welsh Premier, we also have two successful rugby sides. Carmarthen Quins play in the newly formed Welsh Premier Division and run teams from Under 8's to right up to Senior Level. Carmarthen Athletic are currenly playing in the Division One of the Welsh National League and they also run teams from Under 8's up to Senior Level.
