Scolton Manor & Country Park

Scolton Manor

Last updated: 16 August 2006

Have you ever visited Scolton Manor? Nikki Caldwell tells us more about this family-friendly educational attraction.

  • More: Scolton Manor & Country Park: In Pictures

Scolton Manor is situated just outside Haverfordwest, with the surrounding sixty acres of park and woodland providing a stunning backdrop to this traditional Victorian country house.

The house was built in 1842, by the local firm of architects William and James Owen, and until it was bought by Pembrokeshire County Council in 1972, it was home to successive generations of the Higgon family. The Higgons were very prominent amongst Pembrokeshire society, with at least three family members holding the position of Sheriff of Pembrokeshire, including the last resident - Lt Col John Henry Victor Higgon (1902-1987).

Scolton Manor has been used as both a family home and a convalescence hospital for servicemen during the Second World War. It is now the site of the county museum. The Manor House has been sympathetically restored by the museum service in order to provide visitors with a taster of Victorian society and style, both above and below stairs.

However, the attractions at Scolton extend well beyond those of the house. Aside from the expected focus on stables and carriages, the stable-block area also highlights the precarious relationship between the poacher and the gamekeeper and demonstrates the skill of the carpenter and the blacksmith. Walking past the Margaret steam engine, which was used locally on the Maenclochog railway, and the Gulbenkian-nominated VARDA gypsy caravan visitors then enter the large exhibition hall. The hall displays the broad-ranging history of Pembrokeshire including natural history, geology, employment and trade, life during the Second World War and the Gwalia stores - to name but a few. And after all that excitement there's always the tea-room......

We visited 11 April and enjoyed the Museum very much. We later realised we had left a digital camera on a picnic bench, when we phoned later we were told it had been handed in by a visitor SO a thousand thank yous to that person and also to the friendly helpful staff at Scolton Manor.

I visited Scolton Manor April/May 1994 and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I am a volunteer worker in a Museum in Australia and know all the work and time that goes into the presentation to public. Full marks for a most enjoyable and interesting day.

An excellent place to visit. I've recommended it to lots of friends who have thoroughly enjoyed their day there. Something of interest for most people. A great day especially for the children on a rainy day. The tea rooms - good food reasonable prices.
