Step back into the past with the Year Five pupils of Prendergast School who in their own words tell us about the history of crime and punishment in Haverfordwest.
This is where the last man in Haverfordwest was hanged for killing a man after a fight in a pub. His name was Robling. Hanging was not a very nice way to die. In early days people were hanged by a short drop. They would have suffocated. Their friends (hangers on) would have pulled at their feet to kill them quickly. Later the long drop was used because death was kinder - the neck would be broken. The hangman would cut up his rope and sell of the pieces. This is where we get the saying 'money for old rope'.
Stephen Robling, London Can amyone provide more details about the crime such as the date, Mr Robling's first name?
Thanks
