Portfield Fair is held on St. Thomas Green. It is an annual fair held on 5 October - it was also a hiring fair for farm hands/servants. The fair was originally held on Portfield Common - hence it's name. The three boys in the centre of the photo from left to right are Alfred James, Charlie Gibbon and John Mendus.

My grandparents lived at Hawthorn Cottage after W.W.I and my grandfather used to frequent The Rifleman on The Green. He was a member of The Thomas Reading Room Rifle Club. I believe the pub is now a chemist and Hawthorn Cottage is now a small cul-de-sac of bungalows. He was a well known local character and achieved some success in the field of pony racing in the '20's.

My maternal great grandparents kept the Rifleman Inn on St Thomas' Green in the early nineteen hundreds. This is only the second of the Green I have seen of this era.

Charlie Gibbon was my father's first cousin. My father was Frederick Gibbon - Fred Gibbon like his own father, son of Ebenezer.
