The first builing on the left is the cinema - it was built as the Corn Market. The building behind the lamp post was Market House, built in 1827 and demolished c.1937. This location is now a small housing complex named Shoemakers Court.

My great aunt and uncle, Jennett and Tom Lewis, kept a butchers shop in Market St for many years befor their son, David, took it over. It was slightly uphill from this photo and on the right. I believe it is now a take-away.

Vera Lowe. Ripon and Harfat
The Corn Market became part of the Palace Theatre, a cinema, know as the top cinema as opposed to the County Theatre c. 1934 and the "fleapit" the Cinema-de Luxe in St. Mary Street. At the beginning of the last war the Fire Brigade used part of the premises. I used to go to the fleapit for 2p at Saturday matinées from when I was 6-years old and watched the original Charlie Chaplin films etc.. If you want to know about old Harfat maybe I could answer some questions. I was getting on a bit now!!! But still full of memories.
