Tourism in Pembrokeshire

Tenby

Last updated: 07 June 2006

Abi discusses tourism in Pembrokehire and future development plans.

Pembrokeshire is a county that is both constantly anticipating and embracing tourism. Tourism in Pembrokeshire is the majority of employment and income for its communities. The County's Council recently revealed that its "thriving tourism industry attracts 1000's of visitors every year".

One major attraction is Oakwood Theme Park. Constantly expanding the park is bringing out a new ride this year, which is said to be "their fastest ride yet and a "first of its kind in the UK" due to its death defying vertical drop.

Soon to be another main attraction is the "Bluestone" project. This massive plan for a £60 million holiday village includes 340 timber lodges, a health spa and a sports club. If that doesn't attract you, then maybe the creation of its indoor snow dome will. Welsh Secretary Peter Hain welcomed the development saying, "It will create hundreds of 'obs and bring greater prosperity to this beautiful part of Wales".

Pembrokeshire's food and drink is popular among the tourists and the locals. Drawing near is "Pembrokeshire's Fish Week" which, as I'm sure you can guess, consists of locally caught fish! But more excitedly has attractions involving fish filleting speed competitions, visits to whale workshops and displays of life-size inflatable sea creatures.

The county offers a large selection of nightclubs, pubs, restaurants and much more, offering luscious local produce, live music and plenty of fun.

The proposals for the development of St.Catherine's Island in Tenby have recently been revealed. A £20 million lottery bid has been submitted for the creation of an "iconic attraction", which is set to improve the quality of Pembrokeshire's tourism. It has been titled as "Wales's Special Place", and is said to be a connection from Castle Hill pier to the Island. It will create a new "exciting and spectacular' place for Pembrokeshire's visitors to go.

So with Pembrokeshire's recent boost in tourism ideas, it seems there is a never-ending supply of fresh fantastic places for Pembrokeshire's tourists to visit and definitely enjoy.
