Around Gower: In Pictures

Last updated: 26 June 2006

Gower peninsula, stretching west from Swansea Bay to the Loughor estuary, is arguably one of the most beautiful parts of the UK. May 2006 marked the fiftieth anniversary of its recognition as the UK's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Gower's landscapes have proved to be one of the most popular settings for the many hundreds of pictures sent in to this site each week. Below is just a small selection of some of the photos we've received:

A striking shot of Llangennith by Richard Hart. Gennith is, of course, a favourite for surfers from South Wales and beyond.

Ceri Anne.. I agree, Londoners tend to be an unfriendly bunch... and I can say this having been born/bred in London myself.

We have been holidaying on the Gower for 35 years now, and we never tire of it. We have been around quite a lot and have never found anywhere to match it.

Rhossili is one of the most beautilfull places on the planet, I spent a whole day there about three times and loved every minute of it! The beach is pretty wild oh and you can also see a shipwreck from like pirate days and the amount of shells on the other side of this photo!! Whether a family or just a romantic evening, nothing beats this place! And yes the sunset is just breathtaking...

Currently living in Cambridge, I am in the army so i move around a lot. I miss Swansea so much. The people are so much more friendlier than England. It's only when you move away from Swansea that you totally appreciate what we've got here: fantastic beaches on our doorstep, lovely parks, a brilliant city which comes alive at night, and we are so near to everything. I've only got 12 more years in the army then I'll be coming home, to my lovely swansea

Despite being from the Gower and my natural, if deserved, bias apparent I am unable to describe a more beautiful place in the world than the Gower. I have lived in a number of countries and travelled extensively but nothing I have seen warms my heart more than the view from the top of Rhossili Down of the sun setting.
