West Street Have you any old photos of Gorseinon that you'd like to share with others? If so the History Archive Society could be interesed in taking a look at them. Celia Borthwick explains.

The society meets every Monday morning at Gorseinon Library between 9.30 - 11. 30 am.

The aim of the society is to collect photographs and stories of Gorseinon and its surrounding areas and to place them on their web site for future reference. The web site can be found at www.gorseinon-history.com

We are always on the look out for photographs of any age and of any subject - people, places, trips, groups etc. If you would like to see your old photographs on the site, please bring them along to Gorseinon Library - all photos are scanned in while you wait and are returned immediately.

I am trying to find some old photographs of the Bryngwyn Hall in Gorseinon. My parents Jan and Jack Mason used to own it and I and my sister were born there and lived there for several years. Even though I have moved away from Wales, my roots and heart remain. Sadly my mother passed away three years ago, I would love to hear from anyone who remembers my family.

I am researching my family tree and I know some relatives of mine were living in Gorseinon in the 1900. The address I have is 65 High Street and I have been told that it may have been a bakery called Hansons. It was run by my great great grandfather whose name was Henry Isaac Hanson he wasn't Welsh but was from Huddersfield in Yorkshire.

During the 'fifties I lived at the Station Hotel, opposite the old Gorseinon railway station. There was a cinema next door [to] the pub called 'The Electra'. My parents kept the pub until they moved to Loughor about 1959. We came to Gorseinon from the more genteel (or so it seemed to my parents) Killay.

My first memory of the place was at night seeing across the road a train load of coal en route from Mountain Colliery to the station and pulled by a colliery engine. The line ran parallel to the main road until it curved round to meet the main line. The sight of the engine's firebox glowing in the dark still remains with me; it seemed to my childish imagination like some sort of fiery beast.

Anyone still about who frequented the 'Gyp' (alternative name for the pub) in those far off days? I have photos of some of the then customers.

In regards to...the dance hall in Gorseinon. It was called the Lucania - Luke for short. During the war there were a lot of American soldiers stationed at grovesend, and they used to come to the dance on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Us young lads of the area used to sit and watch them jiving and jitterbugging. The Luke had a band playing there called 'The Roy Allen Broadcasting Band' - they had played on the radio ,which was a big thing in those days .

I have two sets of ancestors who lived in the area: the Rosser Family, who lived at Island House, Penderry and the Edwards who lived at Lliw Forge. Do these two buildings still exist? If so where are they and does anyone know anything of these families, or sources of relevant infrmation, for the period from the mid 19th Century to early 20th? I know the Rossers were gamekeepers and the Edwards were forgemen.
