The Search for James Bryant

Oystermouth Castle Dennis Brynant is searching for information on the late James Bryant of Llansamlet:

"I am trying to trace my great grandfather x 4, James BRYANT, whose 4 children were baptised in Llansamlet Parish Church between 1778 and 1787.

"My research on this period leading to James BRYANT derives from Llansamlet Parish records. There is a birth, marriage and burial entry for my great grandfather x 3, John BRYANT, (died 1845 in a mine explosion in the Neath Valley according to his death certificate.) but no birth, marriage or death entry for his father, the James BRYANT recorded on his birth entry.

"The only reference I can find to a James BRYANT in the area is one recorded in the 1841 Census, aged 90 living at Mumbles Village, and burial records at All Saints, Oystermouth for him in Aug.1845 aged 94, and his wife Elizabeth in Aug.1831,aged 82. However, the Memorial Inscriptions index for All Saints shows no gravestone record and my own physical check of the rearranged gravestones in the Churchyard confirm this.

"The 1841 Census shows this James BRYANT living with a Jane Jones, spinster, Mumbles Village (next entry to the lighthouse) and his death cert. shows his address as Oystermouth. The Census and death cert. record show his occupation as a Mariner and Master Mariner respectively, not born in Glamorgan.

"I wonder whether there is any other local source which might help me prove this link between John born 1778 and this James BRYANT born 1751, or whether there is another James who might be the right one? "

This is an amendment to my previous e-mail about my forebears, and reference to the bridge at the bottom of Chain Road. I have now learned that the Jones family had their shop in 1861 near to the Pontwalby bridge, so I am now concentrating on trying to find old photographs of this area.

Dear Dennis, are you any relation to Dennis Bryant born in Durban, South Africa, 1904. His parents and family then moved to Buffalo, New York for a few years before returning to the UK in 1917. His known siblings were Colin, Stella, (who ended up marrying and moving to Guernsey or Jersey...) and a younger sister who was always called "Babe" or "Baby" (my grandmother born in 1907). She married my Grandfather around 1930 in Reading and so I thought you may be a relation. Sorry to bother you if you are not.

Hi John, Do you mean John Bryant born 1778 had a son Samuel? The only children I found for him in bishops transcripts 1672-1817 for Llansamlet parish church were: David1802, James1804, John1806, Rees1808. I have no record of a Samuel. Please advise.

Thanks Lesley.Have several Briants in my tree but had no success with Brieant or Breeant-I recall as a boy we used to pronounce Bryant as Breeant when speaking Welsh. I have no Herbert James Bryant in my tree but have not fully explored all the side "shoots" yet!

BRANCH (NEE Bryant) of Pontypool (1933) - don't know what this date is, whether it is time of inform. received, or marriage? May be a relative to your James Bryant? Ruth MacLeod, in Australia.
