The beautiful game crosses boundaries

Last updated: 04 June 2008

Food and football - what could be better to bring together people of different cultures?

Both played their part in a series of special events designed to welcome Polish neighbours to the Welsh-speaking community of Llanfihangel-ar-arth in Carmarthenshire.

It was a celebration of Welsh and Polish cultures, as Meinir Evans explains.

More than 70 people attended the 'Agor Y Drws/Otwarte Drzwi' event which was an opportunity for Welsh and Polish people to meet and celebrate the culture of both countries at the Neuadd yr Ysgol Llanfihangel ar Arth.

A tasty selection of Polish and Welsh food was sampled and many of the people who attended were inspired by Beata a student from Poland who is studying the Welsh Language at the University of Wales Aberystwyth.

A bilingual Welsh and Polish presenetation with the children of both nations playing in the background.

The University of Wales Lampeter and the South-West Wales Welsh for Adults Centre of Swansea facilitated a brief Welsh language taster course which many people took advantage of.

The day of activities came to a close with a game of footy between the local Welsh side and the Polish team with the local side winning by 5 -1.

Due to the success of the day further activities will be planned, starting with a rematch game!

I really enjoy reading the articles, looking at all the beautiful scenery pictures of South Wales. I visit relatives and friends in Wales every year and this is a great way for me to keep up on current happenings.
