What's your name?: Nick Membery
Where are you from originally and where are you now?: I grew up in Gloucestershire. Now I'm living near Llandeilo where I settled in 2003.
What medium / media do you work in?: I am a studio potter.
How would you describe your work?
I produce a range of tableware and kitchen-pottery. It is all made on the wheel, but is often altered by cutting or reshaping.
Presently I am developing a range of more individual pieces, decorated by roulettes and glazed with runny green ash glazes, using local ash.
What are your influences and inspirations?: I am influenced by my time spent as an apprentice and by the making process itself. I am interested in usable vessels of any nature. This could be modern disposable items made from paper, plastic and polystyrene, or more specific historical examples including 19th century salt glazed pottery and 20th century enameled tin.
Which piece are you most proud of and why?: My work has gradually evolved for fifteen or more years. I have a good understanding of the medium and the fire. I am proud of the work I am producing now, but know that the best is still to come!
Have you had any exhibitions - if so, where? Do you have any planned in the future?: I have exhibited in many group shows throughout the UK.
Please give a brief description of one or two of the projects you've worked on recently.: Recently I have been spending time developing new ash glazed pots.
What are your views on the current arts scene nationally and in South Wales?: There are many artist potters, both established and up and coming working in Wales. The talent and commitment of many of these individuals is gradually helping the public perception of ceramics and the applied arts improve in status and worth along side the fine arts in Wales.
