What's your name?: Lynette Conway.
Where are you from originally and where are you now?: I was born in Farnham in 1961, moved with the family to Leicestershire in 1963, moved with the family to Wales in 1979, went to college in London in 1980, moved back to Wales in 1997 and moved to Llansawel in 2002.
What medium / media do you work in?: Watercolour.
How would you describe your work? Representational portraits in watercolour which try to capture the character of those being painted.
What are your influences and inspirations?: I was influenced a great deal by the work of the Impressionists and Post Impressionists whose work I first saw in London at the National Gallery when on a school trip. The written part of my A level art was about the Impressionists' use of colour and I have been influenced and inspired by their work ever since. Since living in Wales, I have been inspired by the work of Aneurin Jones and by artists who paint the Welsh landscape and wildlife, either in a representational way or in a more abstract way.
Which piece are you most proud of and why?: I'm most proud of the Golden Wedding portrait which I did of my parents because I wondered whether I would be able to capture them as I see them. I did manage to do it and am delighted that the portrait turned out as I'd hoped it would. It's their Golden Wedding day this Saturday, 8th March, and the portrait has been framed to give to them.
Have you had any exhibitions - if so, where? Do you have any planned in the future?: I haven't had any exhibitions because I worked as a freelance illustrator in London on leaving college and my work was used in books, brochures, magazines, diaries and posters rather than being sold through exhibitions. However, I have a portrait on show at 'Frameworks', the picture framing shop in Llandeilo.
Please give a brief description of one or two of the projects you've worked on recently.: I painted a friend's horse recently. This was a challenging job because the horse, a Cleevland Bay, was a deep, rich brown in colour and it took a long time to build the colour up to the right strength and intensity. I use layers of watercolour wash to describe form and colour and I build them up until the right strength of tone and intensity of colour is achieved.
What are your views on the current arts scene nationally and in South Wales?: There are plenty of artists producing portraits and landscapes, from representational paintings to more abstract ones, whose work is exciting and inspiring. It is great to see plenty of this type of work in Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Cardiganshire at the numerous galleries in these areas.
