Have a look at Ilona Bayley's Slideshow
What's your name?: Ilona Bayley
Where are you from originally and where are you now?: Before I came to Wales I lived in Oxfordshire and London.
What medium / media do you work in?: Oil on canvas.
How would you describe your work? The images in my paintings occur during the process of painting. I have no preconceived idea beforehand;I just have a feeling and I strive to give it form. Sometimes what I paint, happens. The paintings have their own life and I will continue to paint until the image(s)'settles.' Sometimes a painting will continue for months, even years, others may be completed in hours.
What are your influences and inspirations?: Earlier in my life I was influenced strongly by Arthur Boyd, the Australian artist. Later I have been inspired by the work of the Mexican painter, Frieda Kahlo. Now I tend not to have many influences.
Which piece are you most proud of and why?: This is difficult. Probably a painting I started years ago, called Kiss. I have been painting it on and off for about twenty years and I would not sell it. It depicts a male and a female and represents the tension between the opposites - the rational and the primordial; It is holds a mystery that I would like to leave for the viewer to unravel. It can't be said in words, that's why it's a painting and not a book.
