Huw Richards Evans

Last updated: 17 October 2007

  • What's your name?: Huw Richards Evans
  • Where are you from originally and where are you now?: Originally from Trefin/ St Davids now living in Bristol
  • What medium / media do you work in?: Painter mainly in oils and fashion designer. His work has been profiled on television and the national press.
  • How would you describe your work?
The lone spectator of a fleeting moment, Huw capures the power the Pembrokeshire coastline, where the sea dances below a simmering cauldron of sky: the distant headland is an anonymous bystander to the eternal battle. At other times there is harmony, as a truce is drawn between the elements. Huw paints freely without the constraints of formal brushwork "The elements are wild and unpredictable so I paint with my fingers as well as brushes and rags - I use anything that comes to hand that helps capture the power and spirit of the moody Pembrokeshire landscape."
  • What are your influences and inspirations?: Huw spent his youth in Trefin and attended Croesgoch Primary school where he first became aware of John Knapp Fisher's atmospheric paintings and would often watch John capturing the essence of the bays and coastline close to his home.
  • Which piece are you most proud of and why?: The best is yet to come!
  • Have you had any exhibitions - if so, where? Do you have any planned in the future?: Like so many artists Huw struggles with the notion of creating 'the perfect painting'. Although his work has been sought-after by a number of galleries, he genuinely believes that it is not yet the time to launch himself. He opens his studio in Bristol once a year and through this has attracted many admirers and collectors.
  • Please give a brief description of one or two of the projects you've worked on recently.: Huw is also known as a couture fashion designer and was in the past involved in the Welsh Fashion Awards. Other past projects include designing the wedding dress for S4C's Bride of the year, designing the uniforms for The Celtic Manor Resort. He has also illustrated a number of Welsh books and was asked to illustrate 'Cwrt Cosbi' by John Hardy (Wedi 3 S4C) after John saw Huw's work and comissioned a painting of Snowdonia. Huw is currently studying for his Masters at the University of the West of England
  • What are your views on the current arts scene nationally and in South Wales?: Huw is very excited about the art scene in general both nationally and in South Wales. There are a great many talented artists emerging from our colleges and there is healthy competition coming from Wales!
