Where are you from originally and where do you live now? I am from Warri, Nigeria and now live in beautiful Crosshands, Wales.
What medium/media do you work in? I work mainly in wood. I do batiks in cloth and paintings on canvas and wood as well.
How would you describe your work? My works are African traditional and semi abstract.
What are your influences and inspirations? Villages in Africa and the motifs on the cloth, body painting and walls have influenced me a great deal. As for inspiration, my professor in the university (Uche Okeke), looms large in his economic use of lines and clarity of thought.
What piece/pieces of work are you most proud of and why? Of the works with you I particularly like 'Fertility mother earth planter' which encompases art with utility and also picking from the African idiom of fertility and the respect for womanhood. Second is the painting 'Slow down' a reminder that fastest is not necessarily the best, revealing my worries about the proliferation of science to the detrument of mankind in its natural state and how nature seems to be revolting, while some leaders deny the obvious presence of global warming. Slow down is a semi abstract painting of a snail in an earthen pot. The snail depicts patience, and the pot, life.
Have you had any exhibitions if so where ? Do you have any planned in the future? I have had a few solo and joint art exhibitions. Here are some of them: Gbubemi Amas-From 'Nature to Nature' Annamco Enugu. March 1998 Shell Exhibition, Port Harcourt 1999 Gbubemi Amas, Arts Cafe, Algate East. London. Sept 2005 Commissions and Collections Nelson Mandela - Commisioned by Anambra State Government. Nigeria Prince of Wales J.J Okocha of Bolton FC. Door Panels. Enugu, Nigeria King Sunny Ade. (musician) The Olu of Warri (King of Warri), Warri, Delta State. Nigeria Asele Institute, Asele, Anambra State. Nigeria
Please give a brief description of one or two of the projects you've worked on most recently? I have been working on Celtic/African sculpture and dance with grants from the Arts Council of Wales and the Unltd. Very exciting.
What are your views of the current Welsh scene both nationally and in south Wales? The Welsh art scene is growing. I like the influence of landscape art and other such traditional arts as opposed to the current extreme and morbid art (attention seeking) coming out of some other countries, in the name of modernity. We must think of the influence our art has on our children and our society. I think the Welsh scene is one the right cultural path.
