What's your name? Diane Walkey
Where are you from originally and where are you now? I was brought up on the Gower Peninsular, Swansea. I have lived in Holland, Eire and the North of England and settled in West Wales twenty years ago. I now live in St.Dogmaels, North Pembrokeshire.
What medium / media do you work in? I am a painter and a photographer. My paintings are usually oils on canvas. I also do a lot of drawing and some bookmaking.
How would you describe your work? Paintings of West Wales Coast & Country. My paintings are representational and expressive. I work on canvas with a variety of tools including housepainters brushes, knives, rags and cardboard. I use wet on wet techniques and impasto. I like to create an impressionistic mood rather than the detailed likeness of a scene. My photographs are medium format, colour, and often based on portraiture and identity.
What are your influences and inspirations? Lucien Freud, Diane Arbus, the Welsh landscape, my friends.
Which piece are you most proud of and why? Recent work......because it is recent work.
Have you had any exhibitions - if so, where? Do you have any planned in the future? My work is exhibited at Custom House Gallery, Cardigan, The Loft Gallery, Carmarthen and at www.seapicturesgallery.com.
I am co-curating a Welsh Drawing Show, 'Lines & Strata' at Oriel Mwldan, Cardigan March 27th - April 26th 2006.
I will be exhibiting my work at the South Wales Homes & Gardens Show at The Showground, Carmarthen, June 24th & 25th 2006.
I will be exhibiting a selection of small paintings at The Brew House, Grosvenor Hill, Cardigan August 7th - 19th 2006 (Cardigan River & Food Festival).
I will be taking part in the Cardigan Open Studios event over the Bank Holiday weekend August 24th - 28th (open 11am- 6pm).
I have had work shown at Moma, Y Tabernacl, Machyncheth, Aberystwyth Arts Centre, Oriel Mwldan, Cardigan, The Science Museum, London, The Glynn Vivian Gallery, Swansea and many other venues.
Please give a brief description of one or two of the projects you've worked on recently. I am currently working on a series of paintings based on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path.
What are your views on the current arts scene nationally and in South Wales? There is a thriving community of artists in South Wales but we lack the opportunity to showcase our work professionally.
