The Urdd Eisteddfod comes to Carmarthen this May, at the United Counties showground. But what's the Eisteddfod all about? Here's a brief low-down, along with information on ticket prices and how to get there.

  • What's it all about?

    Urdd Gobaith Cymru is the largest youth organisation in Wales and one of the leading youth organisations in Europe. Many of Wales's most famous artists and actors have been members, such as Ioan Gruffudd, Bryn Terfel and Cerys Mathews.

    The Urdd National Eisteddfod is a competitive festival for children and young people. Competitions range from choirs to solo recitations, dance, science, arts and crafts, composition and the awarding of the bardic chair to the winning poet.

    The Urdd Eisteddfod takes place during the May half-term week each year and attracts over 100,000 visitors, 15,000 competitors. As well as the main competitions, there's also a fair, art, design and technology exhibitions, a climbing wall, cyber-café and many shows and concertss in the evenings.

    How can I follow what's on?


    Nearly one million television viewers follow coverage on S4C and the BBC, with many thousands tuning on on BBC Radio Cymru. You can also follow what's going on with comprehensive coverage on the BBC Cymru'r Byd Urdd Eisteddfod website, including a live audio feed of the stage throughout each day.

  • Where is it taking place?


    This year the Eisteddfod takes place at the United Counties showground, Nantyci (just outside Carmarthen), from 28 May - 2 June.

  • The main events: what's on when

    The main pavilion, which holds up to 1,500 people, plays host to competitions during the day and various concerts during the evening.
    • Monday: the opening ceremony and the presentation of the medal for literature
    • Tuesday: the learners medal
    • Wednesday: the drama medal
    • Thursday: the chairing ceremony
    • Friday: the crowning ceremony and the composers trophy
    • Saturday: competitions between local communities

    Facilities for non-Welsh speakers and Welsh learners?

    There will be translation facilities in the pavilion to help non-Welsh speakers follow what's going on. There'll be information about how to obtain and use them in the welcome tent.

    There's also the Welsh learners tent, which will hold prelims for learners' competitions in the morning, children's workshops in the afternoon and there'll be lots of other activities for learners all over the maes.

    Parking is free of charge.

    Prices include entry onto the Maes and into the Main Pavilion. Tickets (day and evening) are available by telephoning 0845 2571639 or on the Urdd Eisteddfod's official website.

  • Wheelchairs available from the welcome centre; ramps into every pavilion; special locations inside the main pavilion for wheelchair users; disabled toilets.
