Although today's duvets have done away with the need for warm, heavy woollen blankets, quilts were once an ordinary household item.
Welsh quilters used patchwork and they may have taken their way of working with them when they emigrated to America and influenced American quilt making.
This is a block quilt in red and white cotton. The design is called "pin cushion", or "counter-change", or "Peter and Paul" pattern. It is quilted in wine glass and spiral patterns 1850 - 1900.
