A monument to mining In a previous instalment of The View from Here on Radio Wales, Penrhyndeudraeth community reporter Jacqui Thomas visited the workshop of sculptor Howard Bowcott as he began crafting a monument to the mining industry in South Wales. With the work completed, it travelled south to Ammanford, where it was installed in the town centre. Rhian Higgins was there for its arrival and gauged the reception from locals. She caught up with Howard and local poet Einir Jones, who collected the text that surrounds the sculpture, and asked them if the finished piece met with their expectations. Listen on... |

More about Rhian & the programme:Rhian is one of the original seven volunteers from around Wales to be trained up as BBC Wales' first ever community reporters. Now there are 10. The result - a series of half hour progammes full of stories which are often overlooked by the regular news programmes, with a different take on the issues covered.
Click here to find out more about the programmes.Rhian tells us a bit about herself:
" I was born and bred in Ammanford and have lived here all my life. I spent many happy years at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman where I enjoyed competing at Eisteddfodau. I am 39 years old and married with two boys.
I am currently studying for a degree in Tourism Management at Swansea Institute. Prior to that I spent much of my working life in and around the Ammanford area in administration and travel roles. Through this I have become a familiar face around the town and it's given me the opportunity to meet and get to know quite a few local people.
In my spare time I conduct research work into sustainable tourism and regularly give holiday advice on S4C's daily magazine programme P'nawn Da.
Although Ammanford has suffered due to industrial decline, a strong sense of community and belonging remains. The Welsh language is widely spoken and traditional Welsh folk dancing continues to have a strong influence on the area. I greatly look forward to the challenge and honour of giving the town's community a voice on BBC Radio Wales."
