Pengelli is a National Nature Reserve, part of the largest block of ancient oak woodland in west Wales. Oak, birch, alder and ash form the bulk of the canopy and there is a thick undergrowth of bramble, honeysuckle, hazel, holly and hawthorn. Midland hawthorn, aspen, wild cherry, goat willow, wych elm and crab apple are also found here. The woodland floor is home to a rich flora with wood anemone, moschatel, wood millet, wood sedge, violets and golden saxifrage. Less common are adders tongue, early dog-violet and water avens. The oil beetle and speckled-bush and dark-bush crickets are just some of the insects that are common and white-letter hairstreak, purple hairstreak and silver-washed fritillary butterflies can be seen. Birds like chiffchaff, robin, redstart, wood warbler, pied flycatcher, buzzard and sparrowhawk are characteristic of this type of woodland. Mammals include foxes, polecats, badgers, grey squirrels, rabbits, bank voles, dormice and bats. The woodland is managed by the Wildlife Trust for South and West Wales in a programme of selective thinning and coppicing.
