There are many organisations that offer the chance to get closer to nature by joining in. Or you could volunteer for the local network of the BTCV (The British Trust for Conservation Volunteers). The Trust helps people turn their plans for helping the environment into reality. The largest practical conservation charity in the UK, its 130,000 volunteers across the UK are from a diverse range of backgrounds and do a wide variety of work. Whether you live in a town, city or in the heart of the country they will have a scheme that's right for you. Their activities include: - One day projects, such as helping to create a community garden.
- BTCV Conservation Holidays - would you like to go turtle monitoring in Thailand? That's just one of their many trips where the more ambitious can get to grips with improving the environment.
- A BTCV Green Gym - a unique opportunity to improve your health and the environment at the same time.
- Training Courses - where you can learn valuable new skills like hedgelaying and habitat management.
You could join the National Trust on one of their organised Volunteering Holidays. They have several in the region, where you can help the Trust with vital work that ensures the protection and conservation of the Welsh countryside. You could help the Heathland Officers enhance the Gowers commons in September, or help maintain the habitats that are home to a huge number of invertebrates in Cwm Ivy. The RSPB have lots of volunteering opportunties, many organised by local groups. To find out more, click here. For more useful website links about volunteering, click here.
