If you're in the countryside in South West Wales and you can hear birdsong, there's every chance you'll be able to hear a skylark. One of the most widespread birds in the UK, it's an abundant resident of uplands but less commonly found in lowland areas, which is thought to be due to the influence of changing agricultural practices.
With procedures such as intensively silaging land diminishing the insect population that is a key food source, its numbers in lowland areas continue to be under threat.
