Youth Hostel Association Broadhaven
The Youth Hostel Association is a registered charity, with the objective to help all, particularly the young, to develop knowledge of and care for the countryside. The YHA was formed in 1909 by Richard Schirmann, a German elementary schoolteacher who was driven by the idea of taking his pupils on field trips where they could benefit from hands-on learning. This necessitated some sort of accommodation, and so Youth Hostels were born. The idea took off around the world, and by 1932 the first World Youth Hostel conference took place in Amsterdam.
