I was stunned when I heard that the gentle giant who held the sword when I was initiated into Gorsedd y Beirdd at Llanelli, was no more. The passing of one of the most sincere sons of Wales is leaving a dark void in our lives.
His patriotism, humour, sense of fair play, kindness and bravery are now but poignant memories. His legacy will be carried on in the hearts of all who knew him. From this Pembrokeshire native I agree whole hearted with,"West is Best." Diolch Grav am bopeth. Bendith Duw.Myfanwy.

What a man! Without doubt one of the Welsh rugby legends of the seventies. I bumped into Ray on a number of occasions, most memorable was on a flight to Dublin. Ray boarded the plane with a camera crew but was just one of the boys, singing and laughing and joking, later was with him in Grafton street Dublin as he was interviewing various fans and he remembered us lads. Ray was a great ambassador for welsh rugby and Wales. A true great - lost but never forgotten

I never watched rugby. I've never been to Wales. But I listened to Ray on the radio and have never heard such warmth and huge personality. I was so looking forward to him coming back to 'I'll Show You Mine' on November 11 and was so knocked back when I tuned in and found that he had died. Such a great loss for his family and for Wales...and for me. I only knew of him for about a year, but I don't think I will ever forget him.

I had the privilege of playing rugby with Raymond at school, representing the Mynydd in Sevens and in Llanelli (approx 300 times). A gentler person one could not meet. We shared many a bottle of rum after games. Although we did not live in each others pockets, I feel I have lost a good friend. I attended the funeral on Thursday a very dignified affair that Raymond would have approved of and relished in but it was over too soon.

Having grown up watching that truly wonderful Welsh man playing rugby, and for the last time seeing him on stage at the National with Dafydd Iwan, amazed that people stood when he came on, is something never to forget. A Welshman in the truest sense. Thoughts with his family at such a sad time.

I met Grav on one occasion at the Royal Welsh Show in Builth Wells. If everyone in this world acted like Ray Gravell - what a wonderful place it would be. Gerald Davies expressed all my feelings in his exceptionally great oratory during the tear-jerking service at Stradey Park. If anyone ever wore his heart on his sleeve - it was Ray Gravell. A true sportman and Christian. The Millenium Stadium roof will remain ever open for Grav to see the game and he will never be far away from our hearts.

I meet Ray Gravell in the early 1990's in Cardigan and again a couple of years later. When I lived in Wales I used to enjoy his radio show in the morning, I am aware he was a great rugby star (my knowledge of that is limited) but he was a true gentleman and a lot of fun. I'm sure he will be sadly missed.

I spent Christmas 1970 in Cardiff and attended a Welsh rugby match at Cardiff Arms Park with the singing and sleet. The passing of this truly mythic individual is a loss of incredible proportions, not only to his wife and young children, but to sportsmen and sportswomen everywhere. I have nothing but fond memories of the Welsh national rugby team during my year's stay in the UK in the early 1971. Rest in Peace, great Grav! You are missed.

I consider myself very fortunate to have met Ray in a rugby dinner at Betws RFC. He was the guest speaker with no connection to the club, but you would swear that he was an old player come back for a reunion night the way he made time to talk to everyone, and the feeling that everyone that has met him would say, that he had known you for years.
I was also one of the thousands that travelled to watch the Scarlets in Leicester last year, when Ray was in hospital. The main topic on everyone’s mind was not the semi-final of the European cup, but if Ray was going to be okay.
Today is a national day of mourning and as has previously been said…. ‘His name would be the first on the team sheet’ and I’m sure he is now playing centre for the Heaven XV. My heart goes out to his family.

Just thought I'd let you know a group of Scarlets supporters on Facebook have started a campaign to get one of Gravs favorite songs 'Yma o hyd' by Dafydd Iwan into the top 40 by downloading from ITunes. The groups name is "Get Dafydd Iwan in the charts for Ray Gravell". On the last count it had reached No 55 in the ITunes chart. Dafydd Iwan has said all profits from this campaign will go to the Ray Gravell Memorial trust.

A few weeks ago was the first time I had ever met Ray in person. My work colleague and myself were in the BBC canteen, following a scene on Pobol y Cwm. Any person who pulls on that red jersey for Wales is special, but Ray Gravell has that something extra. He is an unique individual who personified all that is positive for Wales. I have read all the comments on this site and the thread is love, affection, pride, sadness and also joy. To have listened to the applause given by the crowds in the recent England/Wales games showed the true rugby supporter in such good light. That's what Ray Gravell is all about - he brought the good out in all that knew him. My sincere sympathy goes to his wife and daughters.

The term 'legend' should not be used lightly, but I cannot think of a more appropriate term to describe Ray Gravell. A champion to the people, and an inspiration to all, a man who made you proud to be Welsh, and alive! Had the pleasure of meeting him a few times, and was left exhausted by his abundant energy, and enthusiasm, an experience I will never forget. Ray, you will be sadly missed by all, but never forgotten. May your legacy live forever. (PS. What sheer delight it was to meet the extraordinary Ray Gravell earlier this year in Lampeter. He had such a special charm - a way of making someone feel that they were the only person in the world when they were in his company - a king amongst men and a true Prince of Wales. The world has had a shadow cast over it with his untimely death - the 31st of October 2007 - (50 years to the day of the Sputnik's launch into space) - may you forever be amongst the stars - shining down on us. Loving thoughts to Mari, Manon, Gwennan and all his family. Adrienne & John.

I found out about the sad loss of Ray only last night. I was deeply shocked and reading the comments made has brought a tear to my eye. I idolised him as a centre in my youth and tried to play like him, knowing I could not be ten percent as good as him. He was larger than life, and clearly affected all who knew him. I met Ray though my dad who was a welsh language writer with the Welsh Language newspaper "Y Cymro". Anyone who met Ray liked his warmth of character, he was Welsh and Scarlets to the core and played with pride, and has and will continue to aspire players in Wales. He loved Llanelli and Wales and we loved him as a man to look up to or as a friend. To many he is the True Welsh-Man and Wales will always remember him. Rest in Peace Grav. We will miss you.

They say there are black holes in space, there is one over west Wales this evening. This void was filled by a kind passionate welshman. A fiery dragon on the rugby field, a loving husband and father off it. A sad loss to our nation a devastating blow to the family. Soon the black void will be filled with warm memories, and the light of these memories will extinguish the darkness. God bless Ray.

Ray was one of the great players of that wonderful Welsh side of the seventies when Wales did rule the world with the oval ball (my apologies to any New Zealanders who may disagree)and able to say that he was a member of the last club side to beat the All Blacks in this country which was ironically 31st October and probably the last time this will ever take place as the tours are now part of the past and everything is just internationals.

I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways, of happy times and laughing timesand bright and sunny days. I am greatly saddened to learn of the sudden death of Ray Gravell. He was a hero of mine as a kid and I was lucky enough to grow up and play alongside him in an Old Boys team, socialise with him and be a guest at his home. They say you should never meet your heroes as they will disappoint you.Grav never disappointed anyone. He brightened the life of everyone he met and he is one of the few people I have come across who no one ever had a bad word to say about. The last time I saw him was in Carmarthen hospital car park some months ago where I was on business. He didn't look very well and was obviously in pain. Typically of Grav, he raised a smile and was more interested in what I was doing there and wished me a successful business meeting. The following day, I learned that Grav had had his leg amputated.Grav was enthusiastic, exuberant, passionate about his family and his country but above all a wonderful, generous human being. The world is a lesser place with his passing. RIP Grav my friend.

What a great loss to not only Welsh rugby but world rugby.I was so sad to find out this news this morning.I encountered Grav on 3 occasions 1) With a Tesco carrier bag at Pontyberem RFC (everyone else had designer bags) 2) Players dinner in Bridgend RFC when he was heckled for speaking Welsh his answer was “When in heaven, I will speak the language of heaven”3) When he hit my car window in Cardiff for a chat about the Wales game, he then shouted “West is best” and drove off.To me this shows the nature of Grav what a true and ideal Welshman. Would be a lovely and fitting gesture for the Scarlets Management to name the new stadium “Gravell Park” Gareth Thomas Ystradgynlais RFC

Ray will really really be missed. What sad news about Ray Gravell. I met him twice. the second time was on the Maes at the Newport Eisteddfod. My brother (who is Down's) wanted to take a picture of Ray carrying the sword. Ray came out and treated my brother as if he was the most important person he had met. In fact we held up the procession for a good 5 minutes, because Ray wanted to make sure my brother was satisfied with the picture he had taken. That's how I will remember him, as a man with infinite courtesy and patience. Wales was richer for his life.

Mike Davies, vice-Chairman, TREAT Trust Wales
TREAT Trust Wales learns with sadness of the untimely death of Ray Gravell. He had agreed to be filmed for the charity’s promotional DVD to be launched early next year and had made every effort to be available at short notice for this; unfortunately a first proposed meeting for filming had to be postponed but Ray had indicated his willingness to contact us to proceed immediately he returned from his holiday, an arrangement fate has denied us. We were all too briefly the beneficiaries of his generosity of spirit. The Trust extends its deepest sympathy to his wife, Mari, unstintingly helpful when we pestered her on the telephone at home seeking meetings with Ray, and to his family.

Shocked and saddened by the news, I found out this morning whilst driving to work, the long commute has never felt so depressing. It’ll be a national day of mourning. My heart goes out to his family.I know it often gets said that words like great, immense and legend get used all to easily these days, but in this case I think they all are appropriate. In fact if there is a higher level or a thin little strata above these words to describe someone, that is reserved for the very VERY best of people then I’m sure Ray would be grouped in that most elite of categories…to coin a rugby phrase ‘His name would be the first on the team sheet’.Diolch am popeth Ray.
