Louise Williams of Neath
I've been doing some research on Ray Milland's birthplace. Can anyone tell me if he was actually born in 66 Coronation Road which is now Dalton Road, Neath?

In answer to Louise I can confirm Grahame Jones' answer. Yes, Ray Milland lived in 66 Coronation Road, later renamed to Dalton Road.
I was brought up in No 66 in the 1940s and 50s.
Interestingly, Stanley Baker used to regularly visit his relatives, the Roberts family, who lived directly opposite No 66.

...It would be interesting to know if Richard Burton and Ray Milland were related - can anyone shed any light on this?

During WW2 I was in the R.A.F. and was stationed in Neath for a few months. I was invited to the home of a family named Snow. I remember that on the piano was a photo' of Ray Milland which was signed 'From Uncle Ray'

I like many Ray Milland films, but my favorite is "The Uninvited". Milland is superb in the best ghost story ever made. The cinematography is very effective... the eerie old house, the cliffs, mists, cries, moans, and a great storyline to boot. Milland should have won the acadamy award for his performance here.

My only comment is that I admired the man as an actor... One of my favorite films is: "The Univited". This may sound a bit off but, sometimes I have watched that film over and over. As well, I did like Linda Darnell also. Odd that such great people die in a place like Torence. eh?

Not only did I go to the same school as Ray Milland, but I worked in the Empire Cinema Neath where his films were shown. His father often came in to see his films and always sat in the same seat. He was given a cup of tea with the compliments of the manager.

I will never forget as a child watching 'The man with x-ray eyes' on my own at home. 'If thy eyes offend thee, PLUCK them out'!! I screamed like my sister. I followed his achievements from that point forwards. A true welshman and great actor.

I am the number one Ray Milland fan. Ever since I was 10 years old in 1963 when I first saw The Man With The X-Ray Eyes. I looked up his work at the library and since then I watch every film that I can. I love so many of his films from Jungle Princess to Love Story to Hart to Hart. One of my favorites is The Major and The Minor. It is so delightful to see this film. I love to read about his life and I enjoy hearing behind the scenes trivia about the making of his movies. Ray Milland, as I have stated many times, is the best actor of all years.

Why is there no memorial to Ray Milland in Neath? He was a fine film actor and is worthy of remembering. Is this oversight genuine or typical of the phrase "a prophet in his own town"...

Graham Owen mentioned that Ray Milland attended the Gnoll School which I assume was a primary school. Does anyone know which High School or College he attended? When I attended Kings College, Cardiff in the 1940s I was told he had been a pupil years before but could never varify this.

It's amazing the talent that comes from Wales, it seem's like every village has a castle and an actor or singer we have Stanley Baker, Donald and Glyn Houston and Tom Jones from the Rhondda.

I saw my first film starring Ray Milland ("The Uninvited") in the 1980s, probably around the time the actor passed away. He projected something onscreen that is just fun to watch. It was certainly a sophistication, but there was also a core of decency and good manners reflected in the characters he portrayed -- even when he was playing a wannabe wife killer in Dial M for Murder.
The man also had a talent for reflecting inner thoughts without uttering a word. Watch his eyes during key scenes in many films...especially during the taxi ride home in "Dial M".
He left a large body of work behind, but he also left a big void that has yet to be filled by any other actor. A somewhat hard-to-find treat is his 1959-1960 noir-style detective tv series "Markham".

I love the work he did in the 30's, especially Easy Living and Three Smart Girls, two very elegant, sexy and funny films which would not have been so much so without Mr. Milland.

One of Ray Milland's finest films is, The Uninvited, one of the first movies about ghosts to take them seriously. Even today it works well, and Milland is terrific.
It is a shame that this talented actor is so often overlooked, he should not be. He did something Richard Burton didn't do...he won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his grim role in The Lost Weekend.

According to Barry Norman's Trivia quiz question, Ray Milland rode in the Grand National. He was certainly a steeplechase jockey but I can't confirm that he was actually in the Grand National.Does anyone know.

In answer to the question from Loiuse above. The Western Mail ran a story some years ago by their writer Mario Risoli, when he traced Ray Milland's sister Enid who supplied a picture of Ray, Enid and their other sister Beryl standing outside No 66 Coronation Road in Neath. The street was renamed in the 1980's as Dalton Road...

My late father, Trevor Thomas, of Leonard Street, Neath was born on 1901. He knew Ray 'Milland' as a boy in Neath. My dad told me that Ray took his name from a small industrial area of central Neath called Millands Yard. That area is still there to this day - an old school friend of mine is managing director of a high tech company which is based there.

I'm very found of Ray Milland's films and career even if he is yet not well known in France. I think that he is one of the bests actors of his generation and I like him because he was always well-dressed,and he used to play men with anxiety quite well in suspense films.
My favourite films with him are Le Crime Etait Presque Parfait 'Dial M for Murder', Le Poison 'The Lost Week-End', La Fille Sur La Balancoire 'The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing'...

Am reading Ray Milland's biography, it says he picked the name Milland from the Mill Lands he liked to visit as a child, where he lived sometimes with his aunt. Reginald Truscott-Jones was his given name.

Ray Milland took the name Milland as he was born on that street. He incidentally attended the Gnoll School and would visit on his trips to Neath. I cannot remember his family name. The Millands were so named as they were the Mill Lands. I lived on the corner of London Road and The Rope Walk. My Grandmother taught at the school on Queen Street, which is still there (or was 5 years ago). My Great Grand Parents 'Davies' lived in the street behind Bethania Chapel next door to The Arnolds Grocery Store.
