Born and raised in the small town of Glynneath, Max has spent his married life here with his wife and family. The town has provided him with a great deal of inspiration for the material that he has performed on stage.
Max's father was a miner who was tragically killed in a pit explosion just days after Max was born. Max himself spent over a decade working in a nearby pit and also studied for a degree in mining engineering.

Max began his days on stage as a folk singer, performing at The Valley Folk Club in Pontardawe, recording a handful of songs. This led to interest from EMI and he signed a contract to record a series of live albums of songs and stories.

On 23 November 1973 Max recorded 'Live At Treorchy', introducing such songs as 'The Outside Half Factory' and 'Morgan Moon'. Unexpectedly this album went 'gold' and was followed by 'We All Had Doctors' Papers' in 1975, with this second album reaching number one - the first comedy album to do so. He received further gold discs for his 1976 release 'The Incredible Plan' and the 1978 'I Know 'Cos I Was There'.

In the spring of 1977, television recognised Max's talents, and the first Max Boyce In Concert programme was produced. This was followed up by numerous chat show appearances and three 'adventure' TV specials. The first of these was 'Max Boyce Meets the Dallas Cowboys' - where he played quarterback for the famous American team. He has also gone on to pen several books which recount his tales of life in South Wales through poems, stories and song.

In the late 1990's Max was introduced to a younger audience through a new television series, and he played at the opening of the Welsh Assembly in Cardiff. In 2000 he was awarded the MBE by Prince Charles in a ceremony held at Cardiff Castle.

Moment of Glory: Being awarded the MBE in 2000.

I saw MB live some years ago. It was a treat from my parents as I was a fan and had a number of his live LPs. That night (Preston Guild Hall) I bought an LP by Neil Lewis who played with MB. Unfortunately that LP has now long gone to the charity shop and I don't have a tape copy, like all the rest. Does anyone know if there's a mine in the valleys somewhere turning out Neil Lewis CDs or information.

Max has given me so much happiness over the years. Unfortunately I cannot see him much now as he seldom visits Kent but I did see him in october, 2005 and he was the same as ever. Max is totally genuine and he has a lovely family too.

I am trying to locate the piece by Max Boyce about a day trip. My father is always trying to remember it and laughs whenever he thinks about it but I have searched for it on every visit I make and to date have had no luck. Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

I have been a dedicated fan of Max Boyce since 1976. I have all his records and go to as many of his concerts as is possible; this is not easy in Kent as he rarely appears! Can't wait for his concert on 14th September, 2005 at Dartford, Kent(despite my broken foot!) I will always support this sincere, genuine and true Welshman!

Love his stuff, despite much of it bringing tears to me eyes, taking me back to when I was 6 or 7, listening to it on headphones back at (now sadly deceased) 'nans house.
It is a pity that so little is available on CD.

Rhys Davies from Swansea
In late 1974, Max Boyce went with his wife to The Ivy Bush Royal Hotel in Carmarthen for supper. At the time, my father sang there with his combo, providing musical entertainment and dancing for the diners. My dad had just written a new song, a Welsh Ballad and sang it for the first time that evening.

Max immediately recognised that the song entitled 'Swansea Town' would be perfect for his new (2nd) album 'We All Had Doctors Papers'. Max made that song famous and it has since been recorded by many artists including Sir Harry Secombe. It was once sung by a very drunk Phil Bennett and Sasha Distel in a French nightclub, although Mr Bennett, a citizen of Llanelli, changed the lyrics to Scarlet Town.

Max and my father became good friends and remain so to this day. Max has recored several of my fathers songs and all of them have been subsequently recorded by other artists. Even at the height of his fame in the 1970s, whenever Max came to our house, he was always easy going, generous and friendly. I haven't spoken to him for some years because I now live and work in London, but I can confidently say that Max is not and never was a Welsh celebrity.

The word celebrity now has connotations that suggests a low grade fame sought by media whores for no good reason. Max is a true star, with the talent, charisma and an almost child-like joy in performance. This is why he has lasted the decades, when so many others have faded away.

Max Boyce, Welshman and star - old school.

I love Max Boyce I feel like I've known him all my life, when I was a youngster in the 70's my uncle would play his songs all the time and we would all sing along to them. He has filled my life with so much happiness and laughter over the years, even though I live in England I still sing his songs to my children now, and I am sure he has brought thousands of other people as much laughter and happiness as he has me. Thank you Max.

Max is that rare breed these days a comedian who is actually clean! He is a brilliant all round entertainer and we should see more of him on television.

Barney Webb - Wimborne, Dorset
Max Boyce is nothing short of a genius, & his obvious pleasure in performing always manages to transmit itself to his audiences. As a proud Englishman, my heart sank when he performed with Tom Jones at Wembley before the Wales game - I just knew that with those two on board England didn't stand a chance & the Red Dragon would triumph! More power to your elbow Max! Thank you for many years of superb entertainment - please don't ever retire.

Is trying to track down a copy of Max Boyce's 'Barry Island'. My mum and dad live in a warden controlled housing complex and a lot of the residents love Max. I thought this would be great for their Christmas party. When Max visited Hereford years ago many of the residents went to see him. If any one could tell me where to get a copy I would be most grateful.

I am trying to get my hands on a song by Max Boyce called Felna Mai, which was on an album I owned many years ago. As a Welsh speaker living in Scotland for many years the lyrics still stick in my mind. I would appreciate if any one could send me information on where I could get a copy on cd if possible.

I'm trying to find out the words for the Max Boyce song 'The pit head baths are a super market now' and if 'if ham was underground it would cost 12 bob a pound'... Cheers.
