Evan Roberts

Born: 1878
Place of Birth: Loughor

Famous For: Leader of the Welsh Religious Revival of 1904 - 05

"In his day he was a spiritual David Beckham" - writer Kevin Adams

Biography: Evan Roberts was the charismatic leader of the Welsh Religious Revival of 1904 - 05, a 'spiritual awakening' which saw more than 100,000 people in Wales pledge their faith in Jesus Christ. The 27-year-old became a huge celebrity, and the year-long religious upsurge he inspired is now seen as the instigator of the world-wide Pentecostal movement.

In an article on BBC News Online, his origins and impact on Welsh life and the wider world came under the spotlight:

For many, the Welsh-speaking coal-miner's son from Loughor was the answer to their prayers - a working-class preacher who had emerged from the tough, often dangerous industries of pre-World War One Wales.

Despite working in the mines from the age of 12, and then re-training as a blacksmith, the devout Christian decided he had to preach the word of God. He began training to become a minister, but one night, after he had been praying about the "failure" of mainstream Christianity, his life was transformed when God came to him in his dreams.

He later said: "I found myself with unspeakable joy and awe in the very presence of the almighty God.... I was privileged to speak face-to-face with him as man speaks face-to-face with a friend."

Roberts stormed on to the scene as a preacher in the still low-key religious upsurge then taking place in south and west Wales in the spring of 1904.His fame became such that even a rumour that he was to be at a particular church or chapel would see hundreds of people turn up.

Yet his addresses ran contrary to the loud, aggressive sermons of more fire-and-brimstone preachers, as well as the more formal highly-structured delivery of Welsh-language sermonising. He was quiet, often reflective, and invited the audience to participate, to share their experience of the Holy Spirit.

His style worked. Churches quickly reported an 80,0000 rise in congregations, and thousands more followed as people across the UK and Europe flocked to hear him. Newspaper readers became avid consumers of stories about him and his friends, and editors soon realised they could boost their sales by carrying daily reports on his exploits.

And the social effects of the religious fervour made itself felt, often in mysterious ways.
Drunkenness - and beer sales - fell as thousands took the pledge, while the crime rate dipped as people strove to lead a more honest life and repay their debts.

Employers said the quality of men's work went up and even the miners' pit ponies, which dragged coal-laden wagons to the surface, were confused when their usually foul-mouthed handlers stopped using obscene language.

Evan and fellow revivalists in Loughor around 1905Even the man who was to become arguably the Tony Blair of his day, the Caernarfon MP and future prime minister, Lloyd George, singled him out for praise and the odd photo opportunity. Young people were particularly attracted to Roberts' preaching style and soon he also had a band of young women devotees, whom newspapers said had fallen under the spell of the "Welsh Wesley".

Roberts style of preaching was to become a blueprint for the Pentecostal movement, which today numbers an estimated 115 million people worldwide.

Yet after little more a year in the public eye, he retired, exhausted. The religious revival descended into chaos and acrimony, but by then had laid the foundations stones for a similar upsurge in America a few years later.

He recuperated in England, where he lived for several years before returning to Wales to live quietly in Cardiff, writing poetry in English and Welsh, until his death in 1951. The 72-year-old had never married.

I am attempting to find out something of the history of the site of the Apostolic church at 24/25 St Helens Road Swansea, which was recently demolished. Flats have now been built upon the site by Coastal Housing Assiation. There is some history of an agricultural hall previously on the site, which I would like to pursue.

I believe there is more to happen in this world, the Holy Spirit continues to be the same. As Evan Roberts did, I am praying and working to make it real. I believe in the power of the Holy Spirit!

How we need another Evan Roberts today! I am currently one of the youngest members in Moriah at just 18 (the next is nearly 50!) We are only 19 people left! It is so sad to see the Revival chapel with so few local people.

It's hard to believe, but the majority of people in Swansea don't know a thing about the revival and have no interest in Chapel at all. One chapel in Wales closes every week! And many in Swansea have already gone.

But what an encouragment we have in Moriah to see people form all over the world comming to give thanks to God for what he did back in 1904, (knowing He can do it again) and so too we pray that God will again raise up another revival in Wales that one day we may see a Land of Song, chapels overflowing and people comming to Christ once again, as Evan Roberts himself prayed "Anfonwch yr Ysbryd Glan yn awr, er mwyn Iesu Grist" - (Send the Holy spirit now for Jesus Christ's sake.)

The story of what God did through Evan Roberts in the days of the great Revival is an encouragement to my heart that God can still do same in this generation to which I belong.

I remember as a child in the late 1940's and early 50's going to the church for Sunday School. The old men would be sitting in their seats and as the preaching commenced there could be heard the voices of the older men, and women too, all with raised voices as they exhorted the preacher to 'PREACH IT BROTHER!' and AMEN - 'ALLELUJAH ' AND 'AH DEU'.

I have no doubt that this was a man of God, and I thank God that Evan Roberts was raised up to bring people to repentance and faith in God. Oh that we could see it again....I shall never ever forget those Sundays, and hearing the oldies, whose lives had been touched by God and changed forever.

I was thrilled to read the article and comments about Evan Roberts. Having being raised in a village near Loughor, Tumble, and hearing many stories of Evan Roberts and his message. I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Saviour as a young girl of twelve. That was many years and many experiences ago! He has been a best friend and counsellor throughout the years. Jesus is still calling the people of Wales, and everywhere, to himself who is THE way, truth and life because he`s soon coming back for his own. Thanks for the great article.

I have just been studying revival history and see the need for it here in Finland. What a challenge in these days of prosperity Gospels. I believe Evan Roberts was indeed a man of God and the revival genuine. What the church does need is a call to repentance. Without that, all calls for revival are useless. Do as Evans did...

I just had to have my comment because Evan Roberts life has greatly moved me. I wish he had been married and his life had ended differently. He was a great man with a pure passion for God, something I earnestly pray that I have. Oh that we will see such days in our days

Evan Roberts was a true God of Grace person who prayed to God, day in and day out. It was the Lord through prayer that spoke to Evan Roberts to return to his home back in South Wales and there many through his preaching night after night came under the sound of the Gospel and came to know the Lord by faith. If only it could happen in England today and that the spark would not go out just like the spark that stayed lit when Evan Roberts filled the chapels every night and souls where saved. May Evan Roberts be remembered for the years to come and as a servant set from God to sow the seeds of harvest.

I am very happy to see that these revival that took place in wales some 104 years ago that gave birth to the apostolic church did not just end during that time but has had an effect in our own generation. Thank god that the apostolic church which was the back bone of these revival is still standing on a solid rock as it is represented over 54 countries world over

Ever since I had the privilege to be born-again by God Almighty, I have been a man on fire for Jesus. It's easy to say 'Where are the great Evangelists or Revivalists of and for today?' Jesus Christ gave all of His followers His Great Commission to go out and preach the Gospel to EVERY CREATURE.

Therefore, let anyone who is a born-again believer in Jesus be inspired by what the Lord did through men like Evans. So go out, everyone, and do likewise because Jesus IS coming back and doesn't want to find either the church as the collective body of Christ or the individual believer sitting idle. Let us redeem the time and proclaim the Good News of Hope and Deliverance.

Yes, our Lord Jesus Christ wants us as Evan Roberts and even more. But does we want to be like that? This mean totally surrender to His will.... You know, Christians are a lot of the time too weak for this. We need to clean up our own lives, to pray, pray and pray. For me it's really hard to give up all in my life to Jesus Christ. I want it but, but I won't succeed fast...You know, it's hard... we have to pray! Be blessed!

Our Lord Jesus Christ wants all Christians of today to be like Evan Roberts. Like Evan Roberts, all Christians should pray to God for having a prayerful life like Jesus Christ so that the world today will become a heaven. My sincere prayers for the church and church leaders for a revival today.

Looking around the many chapels in North Wales that are either empty, or have now beeb utilised for commercial purposes makes it hard to image that this land was once the centre of God's revival. Yet the fact remains that it did and that God was able to use ordinary men like Evan Roberts bears testiminy to this.

One of the most amazing things about this meeting is that Evan stated the people needed to repent of their sins before God moved. Evidently, we need to be doing the same thing today. Gipsy Smith, said we need to draw a chalk circle around ourselves and begin there if we want to see revival.

I live about five minutes away from Moriah Chapel. The chapel became the focus of attention from the media and visitors alike during the centenary celebrations. Even saw a party of Japanese tourists there one day.

My own sons asked what the fuss was about, for regretably, this very important history that is on our own doorstep, isn't taught in our local schools.

I explained to them about the Welsh Revival and the impact it had on the world.

Swansea singer and songwriter Mal Pope has written a musical based on the life of Evan Roberts which is called 'Amazing Grace' which I've seen twice, and was absolutely fantastic. It is a true story which will appeal to believers and non-believers; you will not fail to be moved by this production.

I feel privileged to have been born & brought up in Loughor (my family still live there). My great-grandmother, Emily Roberts, was a cousin and contemporary of Evan Roberts. She lived only a few doors away from Moriah Chapel and was a member of the congregation. That something very special happened during his sermons was unquestionable and still the subject of family legend. Loughor people still take great pride in 'their' Evan Roberts.

I moved to Morfydd street in Morrriston in 2004. The house was once owned by The Salvation Army and we have been told by some of it's members that Evan Roberts stayed at the property. If any one has any information on this we would be very gratefull.

I recently visited some friends in Swansea and found that one was an elder in Moriah Chapel Loughor. Though very unwell he pushed a leaflet into my hand to read. On reading I understood that the church of which my friend was an elder is the very one in which the revival started a hundred years ago.

I was thrilled. He took me there and showed me round - it was very moving to see the school room where Evan Roberts locked the door on the meeting until the Holy Spirit came. To think that all this happened in such an ordinary place. But that is the way with God. We shared things together that only his children know, and both our hearts burned within us both then and for days afterwards.

I had the chance and priviledge to visit Loughor, Wales in 2003 and go to the location where this all took place - Moriah Chapel. Sadly, a hundred years later, 99% of the young people in Wales don't even know about the history that took place there 100 years ago that literally reached across and touched the rest of the world, even to Los Angeles, CA...and it happened through a young man. Evan Roberts, loved God more than life.

I am forever changed in my pursuit of God after reading and understanding the life of Evan Roberts. He was my age(26) when the Revival hit. Evan Roberts, who always ran from the media, wanted the precious people of Wales know that the revival was not about him, becuase it was not. To Evan Roberts, it was about the reality of Jesus Christ and the love of God towards mankind. This event in his - story is only a glimpse of what we will see on a greater scale in the near future-a Revival Generation.
