Biography: In 1948 Kingsley Amis moved to Swansea to take up a lecturer's post. He was to remain in the city until 1961, during which time he embarked upon a successful career as a writer and poet. His debut novel was 'Lucky Jim', a book whose central character was a junior faculty member at a small university. Inevitably this raised comparisons with Amis' own life. More novels followed and in 1986 he won the Booker Prize for 'The Old Devils'. Kingsley was knighted in 1990 and his last book - 'The Biographers Moustache' - was published shortly before his death in 1995. His son Martin is now also a successful writer and novelist.
