I believe the Swansea schoolboys football team of the late 1940's and early 'fifties that included Len Allchurch and Cliff Jones should be in the 'Hall of Fame'. I spent many happy Saturday mornings watching them when I was living in Swansea and in school at the time and I never saw them lose.

My grandfather, Hopkin Beynon James, was a well known boxing referee during the hard times of the 20's/30's. He refereed Jack Dempsey and Tommy Farr before they became well known and won titles. My nana fed Tommy many a meal as she thought he was too thin and underfed! Hopkin was known to the promotor Jack Solomans and knew Eddie Thomas from the Merthyr boxing booths, before the boxing board of control was established. Sadly, my grandfather was going to referee in the Olympics, but died before he could do so at the early age of 56. I never knew him but am proud of his memory.

I totally agree with Paul O'Callaghan, when he mentions Mr David Owens from Afan College. The former Engineering lecturer who taught for over 30 years (retired in the summer 2005) in this college had such a way in his teaching ability that he did touch the lives of many he taught.
I agree with Paul O'Callaghan when he states that Mr. Owens is ‘one in a MILLION’ and think that he deserves untold recognition for his achievements that will have gone unnoticed. Having been taught by this lecturer for 3 years, I really believe he is ‘A true Welsh gem of a man’.

Happened upon this Hall Of Fame page and applaud the BBC in this endeavour to pay tribute to individuals who might have been overlooked initially.
I wholeheartedly concur with the praise of author W. B. Baker. His exposition and imagery are reminiscent of that of Edgar Allen Poe – with powerful characters and thematic statements that harken back to Lewis or Faulkner. Few contemporary writers seem to be willing to invest so completely in the beauty of the English language. Compelling writing that merits acknowledgment from those of us who treasure the mythology and magnificence of our past.
Tue Jan 17 02:26:30 2006
Teresa McAlister, Knight Ridder
Few people have done more to bring the attention of the world to Carmarthen and Southwest Wales than the celebrated author, W. B. Baker. His Carmarthen Trilogy, (comprised of The Orphans Of Carmarthen, Vault Of The Griffin, and Ordeal Of The Dragon) encapsulates the best of Wales and, indeed, the invincible character of the British people.
W. B. Baker’s novels may well be among the finest examples of representative literature of the region. A stunning combination of narrative melded with extraordinarily vivid imagery, exceptionally strong characters, and a remarkable knowledge of superstition, myth, and religion - all create a fantastic realm of murder, vengeance, and personal redemption.
An expert and authoritative examination of Welsh Mythology!
Other writers dabble and feint to disguise their lack of research or understanding of the region while this author confronts the ancient legends of Wales with confidence and authority. Paganism, Druidism, and Christianity collide in some of the finest examples of historically based fiction to hit bookstores in years. This author proclaims to the world what the Welsh have recognised for centuries - that, as the author proposes so eloquently - the magic within ourselves is, indeed, the only magic ever worth our time.
W. B. Baker is the recipient of scores of international awards, honours, and accolades – all attesting to an unquenchable love for the valleys of Wales and this author’s most capable and sensitive treatment of our prized heritage. His novels are available from bookstores around the world and respectfully testify to the indomitable nature of the British spirit.
This author genuinely warrants recognition for his contributions to Wales and inclusion in the BBC’s Hall Of Fame.

Sad to see no mention of Captain Francis Cromie (1882-1918) who grew up in Haverfordwest and attended the grammar school before joining the Navy, where he became one of the most famous pioneer submariners. In 1915 he led a flotilla of submarines to fight alongside the Russians in the Baltic. When the Bolshevik Revolution broke out, Russia pulled out of the war, leaving Cromie, his seven subs and 200 men, to fight on alone. With the Germans advancing, he scuppered his flotilla and his men were sent home, leaving Cromie behind to run the British Embassy in Petrograd as Naval Attache.
He was murdered by Red Guards in August 1918 and is buried in St. Petersburg. He held the Legion of Honour from the French, the DSO, the China Medal and the Humane Society's Bronze Medal for his attempt to save a drowning sailor. He is the only man to have been awarded a posthumous CB by King George.Churchill called him 'a man of extraordinay ability'.
Cromie spoke fluent Russian, was respected by both Lenin and Trotsky, yet remained true to Britain and became involved with espionage with the 'Ace of Spies', Sidney Reilly (who was Ian Fleming's model for James Bond). He was also a naval Scarlet Pimpernel, and saved many people during the Revolution. For the full story, read my biography of Cromie, 'Honoured By Strangers' (Airlife, 2002).
He was loved by his men, a great raconteur, orator, lover and all-round British hero - a sea-going Lawrence of Arabia. He should be commemorated as such in his home town.
