Louise Cross Stitch
Cost:5
Difficulty: 5
Fun: 9

Visitors to Louise home in Dunvant know almost immediately that she's a cross stitcher. The walls are a testimony to her hours of diligent work and patience. But basically, she does it because it's something she loves doing, and she maintains that anyone can do it.

Tell us about it
It's the most absorbing, productive, therapeutic hobby you could have. And the beauty of it is that, usually, it's portable - so you can even take it on holiday with you.

How long have you done it?
I've been doing it for eight years. I started to really get into it when I attended a class. But it's one of those things that you can do with other people, or on your own. It's really very flexible.

What do you enjoy most?
It's very relaxing and there's a real pleasure in seeing the finished article. Having said that I really love taking on a large project - I think that's true of anyone whose being doing it for a while.

Who would enjoy it?
I think that anyone would enjoy this. There's no age, or gender barrier. I've met fellow cross-stitchers of all nationalities, ages, and interests. I know it sounds like a cliche, but it's so adaptable that everyone can find something to enjoy in it.

Other points
It's very relaxing. You can become so involved that it's almost like doing a meditation, you become quite lost in it. A number of famous actors do needlework of some sort on long-haul flights, and while waiting at film sets, to help them remain calm.

Value for money
It can be cheap. It can be expensive. It depends entirely on how ambitious the project.

Where is it?
You can cross-stitch anywhere in the world - as long as the piece you're working on isn't absolutely enormous. You can also take part in a cross-stitch class, which gives you access to help and guidance when you're not doing so well.

When is it?
Whenever you like. If you're an insomniac you can even pass the darkest hours with a little cross-stitch - as long as you have a decent light source nearby - it's easy to make mistakes otherwise.
