Travel Talk - Cardiff International Airport

Cardiff International Airport These are archive messages - to air your views please visit our messageboard.

Rachel in Cardiff thinks the airport needs to develop its potential:

"Cardiff International Airport requires substantial improvements. I have lived in Cardiff all my life, yet only flown from Cardiff once. When I did I found the transport links to the airport time consuming and parking insufficient. It would benefit so much more from improvements and re thinking. I hope this can be done, as it offers execellent potential!"

Keith Hitchcock in Nelson, Treharris, has a question:

"Why don't they fly to Thessaloniki from Cardiff Airport? I have to travel to Bristol."

Carl Martin in Cardiff is glad to see additional flights:

"Just a short note to say that Cardiff Airport seems to be improving with the amount of new airlines and new routes for 2006. I see low cost Zoom Airlines are adding a second destination to Vancouver as well as Toronto, a new airline Excel Airways are adding 12 new European destinations and Thomsonfly has new low fares to Ibiza, Malaga, Alicante, Palma, also with new long haul flights to Cancun, Florida, Barbados, and there are more European routes to be added for 2006 that haven't been released yet. It seems Cardiff International Airport are pulling their fingers out at long last. Let's hope the south Walians and beyond will use these new services, then perhaps even more routes will be added for us."

Martyn Symes in Quakers Yard wants more cheap flights:

"We have just purchased a property in Ruffec France between Poitiers and Angouleme. I am upset in the lack of cheap air flights out of Cardiff International Airport. We currently have to travel to Stansted some 4 hours on a good day when we have Cardiff just 30 minutes away. Cardiff airport is so limiting yet I speek to a lot of people with the same problem so there must be a demand for such flights."

Amanda Richards in Rhondda has some suggestions:

"I can't understand why there are no direct flights to Orlando, Florida, during the winter as this is the best time to visit. If you do not intend to change this, you should at least supply us with direct flights to London Heathrow. Cardiff Airport is very good and the staff are excellent. Please sort yourself out as this airport should be used more. The people of Wales deserve it."

Robert Price in Pontypridd isn't impressed by access to the airport:

"Cardiff International Airport - no rail link, no bus service to talk of and a road link via country roads - it's a joke. Any international airport worth its salt would have these services, not just the links to Cardiff either but links to the whole of Wales. It is much easier for the people of the north to travel direct to Manchester or Liverpool than Cardiff I know, but what about people from Aberystwyth or west Wales?"

Glenn in Cardiff calls for the airport to take larger planes:

"So the runway has been extended and improved. As well as taking the 767's, is it not time the airport took more 777's and 747's and some of the larger Airbus perhaps. More scheduled flights (long and short) and more choice at a competitive price, and lowering the landing charge would help too, please. I know that we are not exactly Heathrow or Gatwick. It seems that KLM have a hold over the more long haul routes and carriers. Oh and by the way, not everyone wants to go to Spain and Ireland."

Andrew in Cardiff isn't impressed by the new airport rail link:

"I was grossly disappointed to hear that the rail link to the capital's airport is from from a link, and that passengers using the facility have to travel to the rail line by bus!! I challenge the authorities in Wales to step out of the mire and progress as it says it wishes to. This in my humble opinion would mean a true 'fast' rail link to the centre of the capital doorstep to doorstep... put us on the European map for business and leisure travel."

Joanna from Cardiff fears the airport is falling behind its rivals:

"It seems to me that Cardiff airport has become almost redundant. Bristol has beaten it hands down in the destination stakes and in the quality of the terminal. It seems unlikely that Cardiff can recover now that Bristol has broken away so decisively.

"For a European capital city it is woeful airport. We are constantly told how European a city Cardiff is, yet we usually have to tell our potential visitors to fly into Bristol instead.

"Still, Dr Kim Howells et al seemed to think that Cardiff airport was good enough for the people of Wales in the government's recent airport expansion paper. With such dynamic foresight, it's no wonder we're the poor man of Europe in the air transport stakes."

Carl Martin in Cardiff isn't impressed by reports in April 2005 of a decline in passengers:

"For the second or third year now Cardiff airport has seen a downturn in passengers by 19% where other airports are gaining passengers and their figures are up. Is it ever going to get any better? An airport with a low cost airline named bmibaby from Cardiff don't seem to be doing any justice with its cancellations and shortage of aircraft.

"It has given Air Wales the UK destinations and Paris, so only has a couple of destinations flown by 737 jet aircraft, the routes flown by a 50 seater Air Wales aircraft, which I must say and hope that they are doing very well since operating from Cardiff. They deserve it - we hardly see bmi at the airport these days.

"I think we need another low cost airline such as Ryanair or Easyjet or even flybe gives a great number of routes and destinations. So what is it with bmi? Now it has Birmingham, Manchester, Nottingham Airports it seems to be giving them the most routes and destinations. I only hope that one day we will have a tidy low cost airline flying from Cardiff, as I think the people of Wales deserve it.

"One more thing - what happened to the Abertis take over? With the new Cardiff airport website up and running, it has TBI written all over it."

Adrian Chess in Nantes, France, wants direct flights between the twinned cities:

"Cardiff has been twinned to Nantes for 40 years. There should be some form of air connection between both cities. Visitors have to pass by Gatwick to get to Cardiff and then take a regularly delayed train!!! It would not only be good for tourism in Wales and business. How are all the Wales rugby supporters going to come to Nantes in 2007?"

Richard in Cardiff wants to know when he can take a local flight to the States:

"Continental Airlines are now operating direct flights to New York from Belfast & Bristol. That means Wales is now the only country in western Europe without services to the USA. As a frequent traveller to the states I for one am sick and tired of having to suffer the nightmares of Heathrow & Gatwick when flying direct from my local airport would be far more convienient!"

Jess in Newport is hoping for good things from the airport's new owners:

"Yes, Abertis have taken over but I would think it will take a while before you see any drastic changes.

"I work at the airport, and think it is one of the friendliest airports in the world, although I would love to see some long distance routes introduced on the scheduled timetables. We do however fly to both Florida and Toronto in the summer season, and after last year's success the jumbo is returning for the summer holiday season once again.

"Fingers crossed the new owners will take a few risks and try to beat the 'over the bridge' rivals into the ground!"

Norman in Bristol is a fan:

"We like Cardiff Airport -very convenient for us and parking good. People north of Bristol find it as easy as Bristol Airport. But you do need more destinations - more European cities for short breaks etc."
