Higher Education

Students Want to gain some qualifications or study just for pleasure? Here are some of the main colleges and higher education institutions in South East Wales, along with some online resources. Let us know of any others we should include.


Cardiff University

One of the nation's leading universities, a popular destination for students from all over the UK. As well as degrees and postgraduate courses, there's also a range of evening classes and short courses open to all.

    University of Wales Institute, Cardiff

    UWIC is particularly keen to offer a university education to mature students and others who may find the idea of flexible courses attractive.

    University of Wales College of Medicine

    Based at the Heath in Cardiff, one of the UK's leading teaching hospitals.

    Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama

    Offering specialist conservertoire training to aspiring professionals. Sir Anthony Hopkins is probably its most famous former student.

    University of Wales, Newport

    The newest city in Wales also has one of its newest universities. Take a look at the courses on offer at UWN, including the acclaimed International Film School. As well as degrees, the college also offers part-time courses.

    A guide for students at the university based in Treforest near Pontypridd, and a new campus opening for 2007/8 in Cardiff.

    Coleg Gwent

    The largest further education College in Wales and one of the five largest in the UK, with campuses in Abergavenny, Cross Keys, Ebbw Vale, Newport, Pontypool and Usk.

    Coleg Glan Hafren

    Cardiff's largest provider of post-16 education and training, offering a wide range of vocational and academic courses.

    Aberdare College

    Offers qualifications including City & Guilds, HND, foundation level degrees and basic adult education.

    Barry College

    Further education for all ages, offering courses in art, business, science, hospitality and more.

    Bridgend College

    Offering a range of full and part time courses.

    Merthyr Tydfil College

    A wide range of courses, full-time and part-time, from basic level to Higher Education, open to people of all ages.

    Ystrad Mynach College

    This former mining college is still strong on engineering but also offers courses in service industry subjects such as computing, business, hospitality and caring.

    Open University

    The UK's most famous distance learning institution, offering a range of flexible full or part-time courses.

    Learndirect

    Delivering online courses in a variety of subjects. To sign up for a course you'll need to visit a Learndirect learning centre. Once you've signed up you can follow the course at your nearest centre or at home.

    University of the Third Age
    http://www.u3a.org.uk

    Set up to encourage lifelong learning for older people, this site directs you to your nearest group, as well as provides online courses, networks and publications.

    Discounts4Students
    http://www.discounts4students.net

    A range of special offers on music, food, entertainment, computer equipment and more for holders of student cards.
