Velo Taxis

Velo Taxi

These rickshaw-style vehicles offer free transport around Cardiff city centre. Andy Roberts hitched a ride to find out more about the service.

The Velo city cruisers are an attempt to help beat congestion in Cardiff and make the city more attractive to tourists. You may also have seen them in cities such as Berlin, Tokyo, Lisbon and Athens.

The rigid plastic bikes with steel chassis appeared on the city's streets in early August 2004 - you can get on board at permanent stops by Cardiff Central and Queen Street stations, and the Old Library visitor centre by the Hayes.

The service is free to use, being financed by the sale of advertising space on the vehicles. It's not hard to see the promotional value for advertisers given the number of people who stop and stare as the Velo taxis go by.

The vehicles operate under pedal power with electrical assistance if needed, and will currently take you anywhere within the city centre. They can beat the jams by using bus lanes and certain pedestrianised areas.

Velo taxi driverIf it's a quiet day, the driver may be willing to take you as far as Cardiff Bay. The vehicles have also appeared occasionally on the streets of Newport for short-term promotional schemes.

The Velo taxis can take two adults and a child plus a small amount of baggage, and there are covers for use in the rain. It's a friendly efficient service, excellent if you want to save your weary legs. The operators say less able bodied and blind people have found the service particularly useful.

But be warned - you will find an uncontrollable urge to wave royally at the watching pedestrians as you pass them by in your 21st century sedan chair...

I would just like to say that they are a fantastic idea. I have not seen these new style pedicabs in London as yet and i will try to find investors and sponsors to start up a company in central london. This will be a massive industry, especially when it come up to London Olympics 2012. Big co-operations will heavily support it and this will force the government to accept and work the idea 100% for the future. Ohhh, by the way, the people leaving bad comments, are you cab drivers by any chance? times are changing boys and girls. FACE IT!

Julian A Hadley
As a chauffeur in the US I'm finding that this is a good idea. Sure we pay much less than across the pond for gas/petrol but being used to much less per gallon is starting to have an effect on many. This is a viable way to get around and leave your gas card at home.

Norman Armstrong, Glasgow
There is no cost to the taxpayer, the business works entirely from advertising.

Barry Powell
Good idea but are they costing the taxpayer or not?

Catharine Hughes, Birmingham
I greatly commend the authoritites in their ploy to increase the influence of human-powered vehicles worldwide. Brava or Bravo!

Paul Selcke, Minneapolis
Way cool! I especially like that it can be enclosed in case of rain. There's nothing like this in the U.S. How much does one cost to purchase? Whatever it is, it's worth it.

Mark Jones from Cardiff
I have spent the last few weeks wondering if they are really free. Now i know that they are, i will squeeze into one and see the sights.

Brian from Penarth
Mr Parker, who wrote the passage below, should have read the whole article before writing. I see no reference to the taxpayers' money. (He said - "£500 a week of tax payers money I think they need to be flattened.")

Craig Paker Cardiff
Great way to see the place

Jean, from Carmarthenshire
I think the Velo taxis are great if you want to have a look around when you are on holiday, its a novelty and a great attracton. Good luck.

Jo Griffiths, Trehafod
They are a fantastic idea, lovely to see them around the city and they are providing a practical service to those who have difficulty getting around. To top it all off they are FREE!!!

Daisy Wood from Penarth
The Velos are absolutly great! Very handy after a long day shoppin, the drivers are all very nice and friendly. Shame the velos can't be around more often as they are brilliant.I think the velos should get more sponsers and around more!!

Dawn Evans, Tonyrefail
What an absolutely fantastic idea. My Mum is disabled, and kept on saying how she'd love a ride in one. The "driver" was a real sweetie, very helpful and considerate. Mum loved it and said she felt like a queen. And they're FREE ! That's something, in this day and age.

Mr Parker, Cardiff
These things are a pain in the butt when on the road and after reading how they cost £500 aweek of tax payers money I think they need to be flattened. Use a real taxi.

Nick Saunders Portsmouth
We've got them in Portsmouth as well now, they're a freat idea!!!

Lee Jones,Canton
I think they are fab

Simon Jones, from Cardiff
I use them all the time I shop.

Francis Galleon, From Essex
Just don't get spotted in one of these, about 10 six foot 14 year olds in hoods spotted me, But still good....

Craig Maxwell from London
Much better and cheaper than London's old rickshaws.

Laurence Stroud from Cardiff
Fantastic way to see the city - straight off the train and into a cab.

Bruce Lee, Huddersfield
Who ever came up with the idea of that should be hung, drawn and quartered!

Phil Shopland, Cardiff
Scary! And slower than walking!

Nike Hamilton, Maryland, USA
Pretty nifty!!!!! I am going to have to test drive one when next I am in Cardiff!
