Cycling
South East Wales offers some of Britain's most interesting cycling whether around town or off-road in the Brecon Beacons. Find out more in our guide or get in touch if you've got any cycling tips of your own.
Routes
Cardiff's easy gradients and large green parks make it ideal for exploring by bike, and South East Wales is crossed by a number of long distance National Cycle Network routes.
The most well-known is the historic Taff Trail, a mainly off-road cycle and footpath which will take you all the way from Cardiff Bay up the Taff Valley into the beautiful Brecon Beacons. Largely traffic-free, the 55-mile route passes through a variety of towns, villages and landscapes including sites of environmental interest or industrial heritage.
Most of the route follows easy gradients with the occasional steeper section and is suitable for all ages and abilities, as you can do as little or as much as you want in one go. For the more experienced off-road cyclist, National Cycle Network Route 47 High Level Route links Neath and Pontypridd while two off-road cycle centres can be found at Afon Argoed and Cwm Carn.
Public TransportThe provision of cycle carriage by bus and rail varies. Most trains can take up to two bikes, although some services take more. A number of bus companies operating in South East Wales also permit the carriage of cycles on board. For details, see the Traveline Cymru website.
The Beacons Bus runs every Sunday during the summer months from Cardiff to Brecon with space for 24 bikes - call 01873 853254 for details or see the Brecon Beacons website.
The Swansea-Cardiff Shuttle bus can take up to eight bikes. The service runs all year round, seven days a week. Call 0870 6082608 or visit the First Cymru website. For other contact details, see our Buses and Trains pages.
