Thai Boxing

Thai Boxing - Paul Martin from the Cwmbran club (right) takes on an opponent Kevan O'Dwyer, instructor at the Cwmbran Thai Boxing Club, explains why this ancient martial art is growing in popularity.

Thai Boxing - also known as Muay Thai - is an ancient martial art, originating in Thailand over 2000 years ago. Many think that other martial arts such as Taekwondo and Karate are as old as Muay Thai, but many of them were only created in the last 100 years.

There are many traditions surrounding this martial art; for example, prior to bouts, the two fighters dance around the ring to special music.

This dance is called the Raam Muay or Wai Kru and is intended to honour and pay respect to the boxer's trainer, his religion, family, sport and the 'fighting spirits'.

Why is Muay Thai exciting?

Muay Thai is a very effective, offensive fighting technique. It is characterised as the Art of Eight Limbs (two shins, knees, elbows and fists), together with its unique clinchwork (a form of stand-up grappling).

It is an exciting martial art to both watch and take part in, and nowadays there are strict rules to protect fighters. For example, the Phraya Pichai Thai Boxing Camp frequently organises inter-club events where members can experience the thrill of fighting in the ring under strict supervision.

Why should I take up Muay Thai?

People take up Muay Thai for many reasons, whether to learn an effective self defence technique or improve their overall fitness and stamina - you could burn up to 1000 calories in a typical training session!

Furthermore, many clubs often have specific classes for beginners or younger members, which teach the basic Muay Thai techniques in a relaxed environment.

How can I join a club?

There are many Muay Thai clubs across South Wales and these are often listed on the internet or in local newspapers. Classes are inexpensive and open to new members, irrespective of your age, fitness or previous experience.

If you are interested in trying out this martial art or watching it, then click on some of the useful links below to find out more information.

Thai Boxing is better than any other combat martial art including orthodox boxing. There have been many fights between muay thai fighters and practitioners of other martial arts but thai boxing has proven to be more effective. A briiliant workout for body and mind.

Hi I'm the bold guy on the right in the photo, trained through Cwmbran MT. I would recommend this club to all students of all levels. I'm currently living and training in Australia but have also trained in Thailand which I would recommend to further improve yourself as a fighter.

    Kristian Dando
I have been doing Muay thai for about half a year now and I am really enjoying it. It is great fitness and good for your self defence. I had my first inter-club a couple of weeks ago and I did really well. I would recommend doing a inter-club to anyone for the experience.

    Lee Power
I have trained with or met most of the instructors here, Neville Grant is a good bloke, knowledgable and a true gent, Bob Spour is an ambassador for the sport, Ronnie Green, well he is a Muay Thai Legend, Sean Toomey another good instructor with a good gym. Everyone mentioned here deserves credit.

    Michael Ricciardi
I have been training for almost 2 months now at GL1 in Gloucester with Kru Neville Grant, and I know that's not exactly a long time but I must say I love it! Everyone there respects and motivates one another, including myself. My instructor, Neville, explains every move in detail and reasons why you would use that certain move. He has tremendous respect for everyone here and is always watching over us to make sure we are performing well. He is very knowledgable in all areas of Muay Thai. The fitness side of it is excellent too. I seriously recommend joining!

    Ramsey from Gloucester
Have been involved in Muay Thai for the last 10 years and really love this art, training at the GL1 leisure centre under Kru Neville Grant.

    Stu Bell
Great sport, kept me fit for years and gave me so much confidence. I trained in Church and Accrington with Dave Pilling. Great instructor and spent many times on one to one instruction. Great bloke!

    Alex Clark
Trained in Muay Thai at the Bangkok Fight Club in Bangkok, while on vacation in Thailand. They cater mostly to beginners in their evening classes. Loved training there. very knowledgeable instructors, friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommended!

    Bob Spour West Midlands
I have been involved in the art since 1974 and run one of the largest and most traditional camps in the uk. If you want excellent instruction under some great guys check out www.phrayapichai.com We are sure to have a camp near you.Incidentally if you want to train in Thailand at an authentic camp I can put you in touch with Pimu...he is the real deal. (This is not a 'tourist' training camp!)

    Stubbs
What i think of muay Thai boxing is that it is one of the best ways to keep fit mentally and physically. I have been practising this sport for four years and intend to in the future. I really admire females participating as I think all females should have some knowledge in some form of self defence. I am a female myself and enthusiastic of researching female participation in muay thai.

    Suraj Singh
I trained with Master Ronnie Greene (Manchester) who is not only five-times world/european champion, but a role model to all with his humour, humility and natural talent. His classes are starting up again in Partington, Manchester. Keep an eye out anyone who wants a legend for an instructor that won't beat the hell out of you in order to teach you, but nurture your skills step by step.

    Pavan Kanwar
I trained in Manchester with legendary Master Ronnie Green... Not only was he the phenomenal instructor and fighter everybody knows him as, but wise, honest, straight speaking, and supportive of his students. Integrity, Respect, Indomitable Spirit, Dedication... These are 4 of the tenets I learned from Tae Kwon Do, and then saw in Master Ronnie.

    Mike from Southampton
Ive been doing Muay Thai now for just over 6 months and have my first Interclub Fight coming up. Ive done alot of martial arts over time but Ive had nothing at all that compares to Muay Thai. I train at the Lumpini Southampton @ Ocean Gym under Sean Toomey. Ive lost about a stone in weight since I started training, I feel ALOT fitter and have alot more confidence in myself. We have both men & women that train at the gym, all of who are a good bunch of people. I would def recommend Muay Thai to anyone, whether you're looking for something a little more physical, looking at losing weight or just getting fit and having fun!!

    Hughes
does anyone who is into Muay Thai know anything about www.horizonmuaythai.com??its a camp in Thailand were u can go over and train for 6 weeks.i just wanta no is it ligit,or has any1 heard of it?

    Mahfuz Khan, Bradford
I use to do Thai boxing but then found out boxing is better. While they try to kick the legs, I'll be punching the body and head. Who would do more damage? I only found out the truth after trying it all. Boxing was best for me and would make any fighter better. I would recommend trying it all out just for a laugh. Combat sports are surprisingly good fun.

    Nisar from Ottawa, Canada
Discipline and Patience. Before I was an amateur MMA fighter, I did not possess either of the qualities mentioned above. Muay Thai instilled them within me. Warrior must be light and fluid, in body and mind.

    John Theodoulou
I trained with Master Boonckun in Surrey for many years and opened my own club after about 8 years in which my son Theo trained. He has now taken over the club and most of his students have been with him since I ran the club. Great exercise and great community - we were members of the BMTA and met all the Thai masters in the uk - Master A, Master Sken Cru, Tony Moore and hundreds of others. Thai boxing is and has to be based on the respect of one fighter for another, one camp for another. The Thai boxing community is filled with amazing people doing it for the love of the art and the hope of promoting the image of the sport.

    S J
Eagles Thai Boxing in Cardiff is a fantastic place too train Muay Thai, whether you're a beginner or elite status, the gym is a fantastic place too train for high end fitness/technique/power. Lee Powers is a fantastic coach and I'd recommend this gym 100%.

    Alun from Rhondda
I train with Eagles Thai boxing. Just want to know if there are any inter club tournaments being held in Wales.

    Kelly Wallington, Welwyn Garden City
Thai boxing has opened a whole new world for me - I feel like I actually belong! I've been training 3 years in july and I would not give Thai boxing up for the world. My instructor has brought me this far and is continuing to have faith in my ability.

    Jack Govier, Wales
I also go to Clydach - it's great!

    Andrew from Newport
I used to train with Cwmbran Thai boxing, back in the Llanfrechfa days - couldn't move for a week after the first class. Next week I start again, and I've spread the word about Muay Thai, so I should have a few friends with me. Incidentally, when will the Martial Arts Fitness Centre in Newport start its Thai class? They've been talking about it for years - I got bored of waiting and did some kung fu, but it's just not the same.

    Yas - Accrington
I used to train with Dave Pilling in Accrington and yes it was the best. It kept me fit and also allowed me to defend myself because Muay Thai consists of many techniques that are very useful.

    Gareth Pyburn, Hong Kong
Muay Thai is the definitive martial art and sport. No other physical activity approximates the intensity (anaerobic, aerobic and impact). I have trained for over 15 years and have just returned from a camp in Thailand, which is a six hour per day extravaganza in tropical heat and the best possible action holiday. The atmosphere is highly enjoyable in Thailand, because you can literally live and breath the sport, hang/train with fighters - who are fun-loving good natured Thais - and attend many contests in the evenings (or compete yourself).

    Lee Power, Cardiff
Pete Allen - sorry you weren't impressed with the City Road lessons. We teach traditional Muay Thai at Eagles Thai Boxing Wales. We are situated at Cardiff Central Youth Club on Ocean Way. I have had over 30 fights and train under Master Peter Stewart who was one of Grandmaster Toddy's original students. I have a website at www.thaiboxingwales.com

    Kay Thomas, Glos
I want to start Thai boxing but have been doing karate for a couple of years. Will I find it hard changing from one type of martial art to another?

    MC (not Hammer)
I've been doing MT for a month now... twice a week. 1 hour and a half per session... I don't know if that's enough.. or if that's the normal time. I really note some changes in my fitness... I can run a lot more than before... and my arms are getting a bit bigger. Let's see what happens next. I've heard that you really see the results after 3 months of training.

    Pete Allen
I've been to Muay Thai lessons in City Road, Cardiff - it is a fitness class more than a Thai boxing class. I was very disappointed. I have done proper Muay Thai up country.

    Christian Rivera
I think that Thai Boxing is very difficult to learn. Especially when you have to strengthen your body to their level, and it definitely helps you keep your mind focused. My favourite thing about it is that it makes you feel good about yourself.

    Williams
I live in near Llantrisant and need a nearer kickboxing club to my address than Cardiff. Can anyone help?

    Marc Crowley, Aberdare
I'm looking for a Thai boxing club close to me, am willing to drive, love the sport and been out to Thailand twice to train.

    Akhtar
I have been doing Muay Thai for the last 7-8 months. It is brilliant - I have really improved and my confidence has grown exceedingly. I would say to anyone that wants to join feel free to belong to a club it is brilliant. You work on all aspcts of fighting including fighting in the ring and different techniques and speed styles that would suit your charachter, but you can suffer some injuries as it is a very brutal sport even if you do have the right equpiment. I have suffered quite a few injuries including: shin splints, bruised leg, hurting wrists, low blows, shoulder pain etc. These are just a few but it is a good sport to join.

    Gaz, Aberystwyth
I recently started and would seriously recommend it to anyone who did not feel at ease with Karate, Aikido or Tae Kwon Do or any other traditional martial arts. The atmosphere is far more relaxed and expect your body to get a serious thrashing during your first few lessons, especially your legs. If you are looking to get fit this is the key.

    Mario from Australia
I would like to take up Muay Thai as I am in love with the sport. I think it is a great sport. I have tried karate and gymnastics as a younger boy. I was just wondering, how daunting is a medical and what does it consist of?

I've trained at the Martial Arts and Fitness Centre in Newport doing Tae Kem Kwan Kickboxing, it combines techniques from Taekwondo, Kempo Karate, Jujitsu, Hapkido, Kickboxing, Thai boxing techniques etc. Keeps your interest doing a variety of techniques from different styles, and provides a good overall body workout! recommend it.

    shaz from walthamstow east london
i am an expert in many martial arts ,but i always tell people that muay thai is the best standing fighting style.and its one of the best ways to condition your body.

    dave cwmbran

    dale from liverpool
ive been doing it for about 7 years now and now im 13. i love it and i am a juniour english champion !!

    the lone kid
muay thai encapsulates the essence of expressing yourself truly without the mirage of an illusive cloak nor the pretension of a garnished meal!!!!

    Ian Davies
There is an excellent Muay Thai club in Clydach near Gilwern, Abergavenny. The instructor is good, and the training includes stretching, fitness, pad work, muay thai techniques, clinch work, sparring and other self defence techniques. There is a good mix mix of young and older members, and both women and men can attend. Overall very good

    Seckle Ree Croydon
you dont have to be hard to do it you get used to the lively atmosphere and moves performed.

    steve from wrexham
does anybody know where i can find a muay thai gym near wrexham or chester we are up in the hills here you see

    Mudassar from Blackburn Lancashire

    Jack from Lancashire
i have been training in Muay Thai since i was 5 years old, i am now 7 i have done my green grade and love training and doing interclubs.

    Hemanth K, Bangalore, India
I love, love Muay Thai. It's the game of kings and warriors. Even to learn Muay Thai one should have a lion's heart. It's the best martial art in the world. But nowadays there is a lot of dilution in this art, as many instructors from different styles are adopting the ownership of this art as if they are trained in this style. I feel this should stop, or it may land somebody in trouble some day. Well, to sign off, this is the best martial art and you should be the chosen one to become a Muay Thai champ.

    Imran S, longsight, manchester
I have tried many disciplines and the work-out associated with muay thai is not for the feint-hearted. I have incorporated muay thai into my regular style of kyukoshinkai and has proved effective in all my inter-club fights. Muay thai develops explosive kicks with blinding speed.

    Lee from Newport
The Martial Arts and Fitness Centre in Maindee, Newport have there own style of kickboxing which combines techniques from Taekwon-do, Kickboxing, Thai boxing and Kenpo Karate. Excellent!!

    Gareth from Pontypridd
I'm interested in studying muay thai and was pleased to see post left by Stafaz from Cardiff. I'd like to know where on city road the club is and what days and times they train. also, do they teach muay thai or muay thai kickboxing? thanks.

    Stafaz from Cardiff
They do may thai boxing classes in Cardiff at the kickboxing club situated on City road if anyone is interested. Beginners welcome.

    danny from newcastle
thai boxing is not dancing around the ring

    Babu from Cardiff
There is a kickboxing / Muaythai club on City Road in Cardiff. Also a Taekwondo club in Richmond Road behind the NatWest bank.

    Richard Healy
Shame there is not a Thai Boxing Club in Cardiff or Newport. The only one that I know of is the one in Cwmbran. Trained there and was well received!

    O&H from Cardiff
Does anyone know of a Muay Thai club anywhere in Cardiff, suitable for beginners?

Amy Choa Payu, English girl in Nakhon Sawan, Thailand
It's the ultimate fighting system and I am in love with it and the whole scene out here in Thailand! Anyone who is seriously interested needs to come and spend some time out here.

    Robyn Mils
Thai boxing is a really intresting martial art.

    Lee
You have to be hard and dedicated.

    Daniel from Abergavenny
I'm 13 years old and I love to do Thai boxing. I'm on my second karn. You should all join. I was beening bullied and now those bullys are afraid. Thai boxing helps build confidence up, and in away it is stress relief.

    Cwmbran
Check your local leisure centre and your local newspaper. I think your nearest would be Cardiff, hope you find somewhere to train. I will try and find out for you all the best, Kev Odwyer (instructor).

    Gary R, Manchester
I have tried many styles but Muay Thai is one of the best if not the best for standing defence. There are two forms of Thai Boxing, an original Muay Boran which encompasses self defence and groundwork, some of which would be illeal in the ring and Muay Thai which is more widely known as Thai Boxing, which is very different than Kickboxing as we use elbows and knees. I would recommend Muay Thai to anyone !

    Dale Powell from Gelli, Rhondda
Would like to know more and where the nearest club to the Rhondda is. Cheers Dale

    Dave From Glasgow
Muay Thai is a great way of keeping fit, learing self defence and boosting confidence in your movements

    Bilal Lockhart from East London
I love Thai but due to my faith as a Muslim I find it hard to find gyms to cater for my faith. Bowing, music and the clothing. But I have trained with three instuctor both Muslim and non Muslim and want to know if there is a gym that can cater for me.

    Danny
    It's good.

    Mustafa from Cardiff
Muay Thai is the discipline. I think there should be more clubs accross wales and the UK.

    Dave from Cardiff
I think it is an excellent way of keeping fit - much more fun and value for money than joining a gym or leisure centre.
