Cycling
Interested in cycling? Want to know what is happening with the sport in South-East Wales? Dan Gregory of the Welsh Cycling Union offers his seasoned knowledge.
Although cycling has a long history in South East Wales it is a sport which is looking towards the future.
As well as World Championship winner Nicole Cooke, there are up-and-coming riders like Tom Smith from Cardiff, who has just won the Juvenile Race which supported the Ghent Six Day Track Race.
As part of a nationwide project, the Robert Price Get Set and Talent ID schemes are visiting schools and looking for the potential stars of the future. Using sophisticated techniques and equipment this will help to build on the current success.
As a sporting activity cycling has much to offer - road races, track races (the Newport Vélodrome will be completed late next year), time trials, triathlon, mountain bike races, cyclo-cross and cycle speedway are all part of a varied and exciting sport.
It is not only competitive though as most cycling clubs still have sections which go for club runs and tours.
These vary from short slow rides to the Audax events which culminate in the 1200km Paris Brest Paris which takes place every four years.
