Badminton

A badminton match in South East Wales From the grassroots to elite - Regional Badminton Development Officer Elizabeth Sellick offers information and advice about the sport in South East Wales.

The South East region encompasses three badminton counties; these are Gwent, Mid Glamorgan and South Glamorgan.

There are junior clubs in all three counties, with at least one qualified coach to each club.

The junior clubs provide the young players with the opportunity to learn the game of badminton and also competition in the junior leagues.

Talent spotting

Once a player has demonstrated an aptitude for the sport, they are invited into the local centre of development.

There are at present five centres of development in the South East region with a new one planned for the Blaenau Gwent area in the New Year.

From the centres of development the talented youngsters are invited into one of the three centres of excellence.

There is also a high performance centre, based at the Welsh Institute for Sport, Cardiff, where the elite young players trains with the national squad.

Competition

Badminton players from the start are encouraged to take part in competition.

The first level is the junior league, where juniors of a similar level of play compete as a club team.

The next step is the regional satellite series, which is aimed at the beginner/improver player.

The junior shuttle series is a national series providing competition for the more advanced players.

Each county has an under 15 and an under 19 county team.

Coach Education

All the club coaches are encouraged to further their knowledge of the sport; the Welsh Badminton Union provides support in workshops for coaches and players.

Players from the age of sixteen are encouraged into the coach education programme.

Hi everyone - I'm looking to play badminton for fun and social reasons. Does anyone know of a beginners or amateur league? I've played a few times before, but don't want anything too heavy, just fun really.

Abergavenny Badminton Club play on Tuesday nights (Juniors 6.30-7.30, Adults 7.30-9.30) in Abergavenny Leisure Centre. The club has a range of abilities and ages allowing both social and league standard play. We would be delighted to hear from any new players in the area.We currently run mens, mixed and ladies teams in the Gwent leagues for those interested in playing more competitively. The leisure centre can provide contact numbers for those who would like further information.

I'm secretary for Oakdale Badminton Club near Blackwood which are looking for new members to play at club standard. We have 2 mens sides, a ladies and a mixed side in the Gwent league and would welcome some competition for places. We have club nights at Oakdale Comprehensive School on Monday and Friday and the atmosphere is competitive but friendly.

There is a badminton club playing in Splott looking for members. There are 2 open nights coming up on 18th and 25th October at 7.30pm at the Star Centre. Come on down - doesn't matter how good you are, or if you never ever played or you used to be really good.

Sander, Cardiff
Hi - I'm an MBA student at UWIC from Indonesia. I'm looking for a place to play badminton, and I prefer to join a club/social club, since I come alone and has no one to play with. I live in Llandaff, although I may move to either Roath/city centre soon. Please advise me where can I play. Thank you.

I play for south glamorgan and cardiff bay and i find south glamorgan has made me a better player and i hope i can progress

Simon Rowe
I play for Rebels badminton club based in Abercynon sports center. We recently have found out that ALL sports centers in Rhondda Cynon Taff will be shut after 5pm on weekends. This will mean LOTS of clubs will shut as weekends are prime time to play. It is disguisting that no-one was asked for input on this and this cost cutting excercise will be detrimental to a LOT of clubs in the area. We set up www.hawthornbadmintonladder.co.uk for free to help players improve and have recently launched www.rebelsbadmintonclub.co.uk as we are going to division 1 cardiff and trying to attract new players, all these inititives will fall by the wayside for the sake of a few pounds which I am sure is being wasted elsewhere. A very sorry state of affairs.

Kate from Bridgend
I want to play Badminton casually but don't know anyone else who does that. Do I just turn up at a lesson or have I got to book?

Mano, Newport
I am a casual Badminton player. I want to know if I can join or play with any other casual player in Newport. Its an other of keeping Fit.

Jack Farrington
I play badminton for the Cowbridge senior and I want to know how to get sponsored.
