Mon 29 May - Polish builders
"I read in the News Of The World on Sunday that one of their reporters commented that he was thankful for Polish builders who are doing his house up.
"He commented that they were doing it for a lot less than British builders; his joy was unbounded by the tone of his comments.
"Well done the Poles, one may say, but I wonder if he would be so glad if the News of The World gave him the heave-ho in favour of using Polish reporters?
"Some of them can no doubt compete 'un' favourably, as I am sure many of them speak English quite competently, and perhaps write as lucidly in English, enough to be understood by the bulk of the readers of that paper.
"Recent meetings I have had with a few Poles over in Newport, casual though the meetings may have been, left me satisfied they could easily manage to scribble a few words, and cobble the odd sentence or two together for the purpose."
